Before Frida could even explain from behind her butterfly mask, another thing crossed Mina's mind. Just who was D. Vito?
For the amount of time she spent with the man, she sure didn't know a lot about him. Just that he was a former lawyer from a firm called "I'm Lawyerin' Here" and he was initially from the Bronx. That and he had really bad luck with women as he was married five times.
She closed her eyes and swallowed her pride when she asked Frida the question. "Before you tell me what he said, can you just tell me how the leader of the Aura was driving a taxi this whole time?"
She opened her eyes and they met Frida through the slits in the mask. The middle aged aura teller sighed. "I didn't need to foresee this to know you would ask, child. It was only a matter of time until the truth came to light."
The medium approached Mina and took her pale hands in her doughy ones. "I am sorry for putting this burden on you, child. I truly believed you could not only end the Aura, but fix the mistakes I made. It was why I have given you that pendant."
Mina touched her butterfly pendant. But when she looked in the mediums eyes, she knew the truth. "You always could sense things with or without it. Even without that necklace your empathetic abilities exceed many of your age."
"But I couldn't even sense D's aura!" Mina answered. "I was blind to his true intentions."
Frida smiled. "You truly saw the good in him. You forged a connection with a man who had closed his heart off to the world with the exception of one person...his son."
Mina squeaked in shock. Hot Dog Johnny was nothing but a murderous hood. How could he even have the same connection with D. Vito as her?
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Frida released her hands and paced away from her. There was a look of resignation on her face. "You see, D. Vito grew up on the mean streets of the Bronx. And despite his unlikely background, he had great skill as defense attorney. When he became a lawyer, it was to defend the men and women on the streets."
Mina spoke softly. "That is a noble intention. Everyone deserves justice."
"The problem was," Frida answered. "D. was too good. So much, that the Aura had to eliminate him. And they did so with the Great Lawyer Purge. An aura loyal prosecutor put him out of business. Everything he had stood and fought for, was gone."
Mina was speechless. She had heard the words from the man himself, but he never went into detail. "But rather than let a good lawyer go to waste, they took him in and from then on, he would fight for them. Denny's skill and shrewd tactics allowed him to rise in the ranks until he had become the head honcho of the western branch of the Aura."
Frida added, "But due to his shattered reputation and humble backgrounds, he continued to run the Aura from the confines of a taxi. That way, no one would ever suspect him of his wrongdoing."
Now everything made sense to Mina. Except one thing. "What about Johnny? You never told me how he forged connections with such a vile child."
Frida turned around and exhumed a deep sigh. "Johnny Vito was the only child that D had in five tragic marriages. And even though he was wicked, D had raised him himself on his own twisted principles. They had a strong bond as the Aurafather and Under Aura."
At long last, the young attorney saw clearly. Johnny was the product of a broken man and one who enabled wrong doing after something wrong was done to him.
The truth was ugly, but when wasn't it in a situation like this.
"But," Frida said. "Now that you know about the man. I must tell you this. Like I said, he visited me today. He was cryptic and terse."
Mina and her friends exchanged nervous glances. D. Vito was all powerful and was in control of hundreds of levers and strings, even from the confines of his taxi.
Frida said one final sentence on the subject. "All he said is, if by some stretch, Mina Hawkins and her friends win, there will be nothing but the French word for death, La Mort."
