TJoCZ Day 30

Saturday, June 30, 2018, 11:30 AM Norfolk, VA

I woke up with my planned day all in mind. I had figured out a group of four different, cheap items, that I could enchant somewhat easily over the span of eight hours, and give them to Steve to take back to investigate however he desired. One of these would be a weaker version of my own trinket that protected me from falls, that would work only once. Another would be a feather token that stopped boats from moving for one day. A third would be a modification of a canteen to make it produce two gallons of water a day, and the last would be a sample of the mats that I would be making for myself later on in my enchanting progress.

Just about nine hours after Steve left, I heard a knock at the roll down door for the storage unit. I opened it up and Steve was dressed in regular everyday clothes instead of his “work uniform” as he calls it. Steve had brought bagels and coffee with him, and I thanked him for bringing breakfast. We sat for a bit at the table in the storage unit eating breakfast while I answered any concerns that he might have about the process. He seemed a bit taken aback by the fact that I could do such works with simple salt and I told him that it was a odd quirk of fate that there were spells that require salt, and salt has a consistent value back where I am from, and that a certain value of mystical components had to be sacrificed for the enchantment process to commence.

Steve listened intently, and I offered up that I can provide a fair amount of information about my ability with Alchemy as well, when I give a final presentation on the mystical sciences to everyone. Steve nodded as he gave head scratches to Rex, being amused at Rex’s warm nature despite being a cold-blooded creature. Finally, he asked me where it would be best for him to sit for the observation. I told him that it would be sufficient for him to just sit at the table, and he can eat or write down questions for when I am in between items that I am crafting for him to take back. Steve relaxed back as I got up and went over to my crafting table.

I put the first item on the table, the talisman that I had carved from a section of my darkwood expandable pole. Today was an unusual day. I could tell from the start that the ley lines over Norfolk were a bit fluxed today, so I reconfigured my procedure, and started on the enchanting portion. Five minutes. Five minutes is all it took to get the talisman to have the effect locked into it.

Maybe it was just because it was a one use item. Also, there ended up being a nice rider on this item, that until it was used, the person would actually be ever so slightly more skilled at flying. It wasn’t intended, but it must have been due to the changes to the ley line.

I immediately placed the item aside, and grabbed the next item to be enchanted, another piece of darkwood that had been carved into the shape of a feather. Again, the enchanting process took next to no time, less than five minutes again. This time, the ley line enhancement was slightly different, maybe taking some of the effect from Rex living here, giving it an inability to be burned at all. I set this item aside as well, and then went to get the canteen to enchant it next. This took only half an hour to enchant, but the effects of the Ley Line on the enchantment was massive. Instead of the normal two gallons a day that this kind of item could make, it can now make four gallons a day.

I set aside the canteen, with a sigh, and picked up the mat that was going to be the final item. I tuned in to the same Ley Line fluctuations that I had for the canteen, and finished it in less than an hour as well. This mat was something that would change the look, smell, taste, and texture of up to one cubic foot of food into something else desired. The nutrition would stay the same, however, and it could only do it once a day. I had finished making what I could in one day, the enchanting capabilities had flooded into the aether.

I sighed and collected all four of the items, bringing them over to Steve who had been surprised by how fast this was done. Before he could ask anything, I held up my hand and said that this was a bit of an anomaly, as there was a Ley Line fluctuation that caused the items to be enchanted a LOT quicker, and have a bit of additional benefit for each item, above and beyond what they were designed to do. I told him that I would explain exactly what each item was intended to do, and what it did now, as we went, and that he can ask questions about each item or the process as the item was discussed. Then I pulled out the first item I had enchanted, the talisman. I handed it over to Steve, and told him that this item would only work when worn about the neck, either on a chain or something similar.

Steve picked it up and noted that it seemed to be very lightweight. I told him that this was just a property of the material that I had made it from, a wood from my home world that was just as strong as regular wood, but half the weight. Steve nodded to that information, and asked what it did. I smiled and said that this item caused an effect that whenever the wearer fell more than five feet, their rate of falling would reduce to at maximum ten feet a second, and protect them from damage. I added that the additional effect that had happened from the Ley Line disturbance, was that the wearer would be slightly more skilled in flying while wearing it.

Steve seemed wide eyed, and I told him that it was a minor version of what I wore, in that the one I made worked only once, while the one I made today worked only once, and would disintegrate when it activates to save someone from falling. Steve seemed to have some emotion well up, before he quashed it and quickly asked me if I could make more of these. I told him that it would be fairly easy for me to do, but I could only make four of these one time usage items a day, or one of the once a day ones. I swear that I thought that Steve had some emotion specifically behind people falling, but he didn’t reveal what it was, and I wasn’t the kind of person to just pry like that. I told Steve that while I worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. as a liaison, and for Bob’s Gun Shop as a contract employee, I would not fail to help the Avengers with whatever I could make.

Steve seemed to take that well and I asked him if he was ready for the next item. Steve nodded, and I handed him the carved feather token. I told him that this item was another one-use item, and that it had the ability to completely stop a ship from moving for twenty-four hours. I added that this item was completely immune to fire from the interaction with the Ley-Lines. Steve looked at me bizarrely and asked me if I really said that this item could stop a large ship for a day. I shrugged, saying that this was what the feather token was enchanted to do. I explained to him that it would disintegrate upon use, and that it was activated by throwing it down on the deck of the ship that was intended to be stalled.

I could see that Steve was reflecting again on something that had happened in his past, but since he didn’t feel the need to share, I didn’t want to pry. I offered up that I could again, make up to four of these a day, normally assuming no problems. Steve perked up and asked me how much each of these items cost to make. I shrugged, and said that these first two items each required approximately seven and a half pounds of salt. He looked at me like I was crazy, and i told him that back where I was from, salt was a much more rare commodity, so when the rules which designate magic are tied to something like that, and I find a place that has the price of salt as low as six dollars for forty pounds, then the price of an item like that ends up being a bit absurd.

I asked him if he had any further questions and he asked for confirmation that the prevention of fire damage was just the way that the ley-line affected it. I shrugged, saying that it might have been that, coupled with Rex’s magical essence floating around, considering that he is attached to the elemental plane of fire. Steve started to say something, and I stopped him saying that I would include a section on mystical planar geography when I did my lecture. I then handed him the canteen. Steve took it and I told him that this was a permanent item, so we can provide an example of the operation right now.

I said the word for water, in Draconic, as I touched the canteen, and it filled up with clean, clear, cool water suitable for drinking. I told him that this water was safe to drink, and that if it was left in the canteen, it would disappear in twenty-four hours. I added that normally, this kind of enchanted canteen can only create two gallons of water a day, but this one had been enhanced by the Ley Line to be doubled, and provide up to four gallons per day. Steve looked at me astounded, and asked me if this item really created matter. I shrugged, saying that the effect that did this did indeed create water, but only temporarily, unless it is used for something.

I coached him through the command word and the proper pronunciation, until I was certain that he could repeat it successfully. He looked at me, and before he could even ask, I told him that I could only make four of them a day, and that it would normally be roughly twenty-six pounds of salt. Steve asked me if I knew of any reason why this couldn’t be made larger. I shrugged, and said that the absolute maximum that I could do in one day would either be a singular item that made twenty eight gallons a day, or four items that make two gallons a day, without researching some other item that might have more capability. Steve nodded and asked if I would be willing to research that and get back to him. I told him that I would, but it might take some time.

Finally, I handed him the rolled up table mat, with stitches in patterns and runes. I unrolled it on the table and told Steve that this also was a permanent item, but until the other, it only functioned once a day. I brought out what I showed him to be a bunch of healthy, if bland, bread that I had stocked in the pantry of this tent. We both tried a piece of the bread, just to make sure that we knew what it was like in advance, before I asked him what he might like to try for food, preferably that was hand held. He told me that he would have loved to have some hot dogs from his old neighborhood, but that place wasn’t in business anymore.

I told him to visualize it while saying the word for feast in Draconic, which I taught him while he was touching the mat. He did so, and watched as the bread on the mat changed into a pyramid stack of hot dogs, complete with toppings. He picked up one, and cautiously took a bite. His eyes lit up, explaining that they were exactly the way that he remembered. I told him that this magic changed how the food looked, smelled, tasted, and the texture, but not the nutritional content. I added that the change only lasted for one hour, before it changed back.

Steve looked at me and asked if it could make any food. I told him that anything that he can visualize can be made, but it was only those things that I mentioned would change, so any kind of effect of the food that wasn’t based on those wouldn’t be altered. I added that it couldn’t create any effects that would last over one hour, but that the food should stay in the condition it was initially visualized as for the hour. Steve asked if it would prevent food poisoning. I told him that it would not, that it wasn’t actually changing the food at all, only temporarily changing the sensation from the food.

I offered up that I can research something that can do that, but it wasn’t something that I had planned at the moment. Steve nodded and we set aside the items, while he asked me questions about the process, and how it works if it is disturbed. I told him everything that I could, and the discussion lasted for about an hour. Then he asked me the difficult question, could anyone else learn to do this? I told him that I did not know, as I had not tried to train anyone in my time here, and that I didn’t know if I could teach someone without magical talent to start.

Steve listened intently and asked if there was any chance that I would consider trying to take on someone as an apprentice, because, as he pointed out, this was too valuable of a skill to possibly lose. I told him that I could consider it going forward, but that I was going to have to figure out how to determine capability, which would take some time. Steve nodded and said that I should really consider it going forward, especially if the person would not have to go into harm's way to enchant things. He added that it was always good to have allies, and was about to say goodbye, before he stopped and started to ask a question. I knew what it would be, and told him that I could indeed attempt to Scry on Coulson, if he desired.

It seemed like he didn’t want to actually ask, but he did want to know, so I took him over to the Scrying mirror, and invoked the spell. Coulson was sitting at a table, in what I recognized as the “Rusty Dragon”, along with another four obvious adventurers. Steve heard him discussing plans for going forward in an encounter to try to take out some evil undead. For nine minutes, Steve watched as I slowly moved the sensor around Coulson, to see the people who he was working with. After the Scrying was done, Steve thanked me and asked what I thought.

I thought about it for a minute, and explained everything I could about Sandpoint, the tavern he was at, and what I knew about the situation he was likely in. Steve listened to everything I told him about it, and asked if I thought that I could get Coulson back. I shrugged, and said that when I last talked to him, he was excited about his new adventure, especially since he had probably a month and change left to find a more permanent solution to his wound, if he had not already. I told him that I could work on a method to contact him in a few months, but that I wouldn’t want to possibly distract him while he was leading that team in combat. Steve nodded and thanked me, before telling me that he would have to head back to New York, and talk to the other members of the Avengers, but added that he was fairly certain that I was safe to continue operating in Norfolk at the very least.

I thanked him for the affirmation, and wished him luck on his drive back. Steve shrugged and said that he didn’t expect to have any problems. I escorted him out of the storage unit and he shook my hand as he left. I went back to work and decided to start focusing on my armor, since I could not work on enchanting anything else today. I also got my sewing tools working on their own sewing up my next item to be enchanted, my alchemy tools starting up on the chemical baths that the armor would need, my firearm tool working on improving my current guns, and my carpentry tools working on carving up my darkwood expandable pole into the next pieces to be enchanted from that as well.

Saturday, June 30, 2018, 09:30 PM Norfolk, VA

After I got all of the tools set up to work on their own, I determined that I had done all that I could in that regard, and decided to take some time to do some patrols in full gear, with my bike in normal form. I wasn’t looking to race anyone or needing to respond quickly or anything. I guess I was lucky that there were no major crimes going on, or maybe it was just that the criminal element was spooked after Captain America showed up and took action against a bunch of them. I took the time to look to help some of the worse off neighborhoods. There wasn’t much going on that needed conflict or combat, so I tried to bump up my social standing in the area.

I came across a minor car crash where there were some injuries, but no one was in danger of dying, and police were on the scene. As I rolled up from a distance, the police noticed me and I walked up cautiously, asking what the issue was. They told me that there were some wounds, but no one was in danger of dying. I asked if it would impede their investigation if I checked to see if I could heal the wounds. The police officer indicated that it would not, and took me to the first person.

I asked the individual if they were okay with me giving them a once over for any injuries, and the first individual approved. After a brief inspection, I found that they only had a gash and a bruise, with no broken bones. I pulled some wound rinse out of my bag, rinsed the wound out, and cast Cure Light Wounds on them. Their wounds healed as the golden energy was absorbed into their skin. I checked with them again, and they acknowledged that they were good.

I looked to the police and asked them if it was okay to go to the other individual, and they led me to the other car where the person had some flash scuffles from the bag that had deployed from the steering wheel, but I checked them over, after getting permission. Nothing much else, but I healed them up with a Cure Light Wounds spell. They were also upset over the fact that their new phone screen was cracked, and I offered to try to fix that. I told them that it would take me ten minutes to try, and that I could do it right in front of them, and they approved. I cast my Mending cantrip, and the cracks in the screen disappeared, so I handed it back to them.

The police watched as I fixed the phone, and joked to himself that I just saved them about a hundred bucks, and probably a few hours of waiting time. I told the police officer that I was glad to help. He laughed and asked if I could do the same thing for the vehicles, and I told him that it was limited to single breaks or damage, and while I might learn one day to do more, that it was a slow process for the moment. The police officer shook his head, and said that it would probably still save time and money, even if I had to do each item individually. I told him that I’d consider it going forward.

With a bit more banter back and forth, the EMT’s showed up and checked everyone over. When they found no wounds, they came to the cops and found out that I had healed them. The EMT’s and I had a brief discussion about what I did, and they seemed pleased. They talked with the cops and then came back to me, to thank me for healing the people, but indicating that they were annoyed for being called out for nothing. I sighed and apologized, offering that I had not called them, and that I had arrived after the incident.

The EMT shrugged, and offered up that if I could get an EMT certification, or even just a First Aid Certification, that I could respond officially to events like this and the police could inform them of such. I asked what that entailed, and they said that they could call me later to get things arranged. I gave them my S.H.I.E.L.D. phone number, and said that I would be more than happy to comply with requirements. I added that they could contact me if they had an issue where they were in need of some life-saving magical healing. The EMT had a different look in his eyes for a minute, and asked if I was willing to do a ride along with them for the day.

I shrugged, and said that I would be glad to, but that I would need to drop off my bike somewhere. The EMT took a look at the bike, and offered that they could put it in the back while they go back to the hospital to be redeployed. I gladly took them up on the offer, got my bike easily into the back (with some cleaning done to the wheels first with Prestidigitation). The EMT was intrigued and asked how well the spell functioned. I shrugged, saying that I didn’t know the extent, but that I never had any issues with something after I had cleaned it.

As we went back to the hospital to be re-dispatched, the EMT quizzed me on different aspects of emergency medical care and what the appropriate medical responses were. They seemed fairly impressed by the breadth of my knowledge in the medical field. When we got back there, I unloaded my bike into an area seemingly designed for them, put a lock on it, and then went back to the ambulance, as they were called. There was another EMT there, and I recognized them from my first day arriving on this world. They shook my hand and told the EMT that I was riding with that I was the one he had told him about.

The EMT I was doing the ride-along with nodded thoughtfully and perked his ear up as I heard tones and a call for the ambulance to respond to a call. I hopped in the back with the EMT and we discussed what we knew about the situation that we were going to respond to. It was a stabbing victim, and police were already on the scene. When we got there the EMT took lead, checking in on everyone. I was at the ambulance, waiting for him to page for assistance. He called back that they had a deep chest wound, with the item removed. I rushed to the house and ran to the wounded person.

The people who were milling about scattered when they saw me, and I rushed over to the EMT, and asked if the wound was clear. They held a dressing over the wound, and told me that they thought that it was, but didn’t know. I asked everyone if they knew what he had been stabbed with, to which a person pointed to a knife. The tip seemed intact, so I just used my already cast Prestidigitation to clean the wound and to try to pull anything inorganic out of the wound. When I was certain that it was clear, I cast Cure Light Wounds and touched the chest of the wounded victim.

The wound closed before everyone’s eyes and the individual’s pallor responded almost immediately. The EMT gave them a once over and said that they expected that the individual should be okay now, but that we would be checking them out at the ambulance. We both stood up and helped the individual up to cautiously walk back to the vehicle. After the EMT talked with the guy, the police came over and asked me about the situation. I told them everything that I knew, and that if they wanted, I could help check out the scene with them.

The cop seemed a bit taken aback, but I told them that while I didn’t think that I was any better at searching the area than them naturally, I did have access to magical tools and supports that could help. The officer shrugged, and led me back inside. I asked him to tell me exactly what he wanted to search for, and he gave me a rundown of what all he might be suspicious of. I used my Sift cantrip, and didn’t find anything dramatic that would be needed for the officer, except for a note that had drifted underneath the sofa. I lifted it with Prestidigitation, so that I didn’t touch it, and delivered it to the cop.

He cautiously opened it up and read it, before looking back at me and saying that this was actually useful information, and told me that it indicated that these people were being rolled for money. I asked if he already had the perpetrator in custody. The cop told me that he did, and that this should help with the case. I thanked him for going through with the legal process, and asked if I would be needed for anything else. The cop told me that he shouldn’t, but that if it was, he would contact me via S.H.I.E.L.D.

I agreed and told him that if they did end up with a problem that he thought I could help with, that he should feel free to get in touch with me and I’ll be there as soon as I can. The police officer shook my hand and thanked me, before I saw that the EMT was done with the person who was being checked over. I walked back over to the ambulance and the EMT welcomed me into the back of the vehicle. He told me that it was already a good idea for me to do this ride along, as this person was able to come home without the trip to the ER. I told him that I was just glad to help as we got back into the vehicle to get ready to go to the next call.

The rest of the time that I was there with the Ambulance running calls, we dealt with a few wounds that I could heal up with magic, until I had ended up casting four more Cure Light Wounds, and healed another three people via my Healing Belt, before informed the EMT that I was spent of my magical healing capabilities for the day. I spent the rest of the eight hours left of his shift helping with more non-magical means of addressing wounds. I do have to admit that the tools available for EMT’s were a LOT better than my own. At the end of the EMT’s shift, he gave the pass down to the next group and introduced me to them as well. I told them all I would try to do more ride alongs going forward to make sure that I am fully capable and ready to get qualified for providing assistance when I come across people in need.

The EMT that I had rode with informed them that they felt that I could basically pass the tests for getting qualified from what I know and what I could do without the magical healing. I thanked him for the compliment, but added that I definitely needed access to the books needed for the courses. They gave me a list of the books and where I could buy them and I thanked them before heading to get my bike and go get dinner. I rode away from the hospital and got around a corner before using my disguise self ability to look like my non-costumed outfit. I made my way to Chick-Fil-A, and got myself what they call a combo.

I decided to purchase a couple of the books that they referenced before heading back to the Storage Unit, figuring if I wasn’t doing a ride-along or helping in some way tomorrow, I could bone up on learning what I needed, so that I could get that qualification at least. When I got back to the storage unit, Rex was settling in, rereading his children’s books. I dumped the rest of my available spells into the Unseen Crafter spells to work further on the items. I set myself up for resting and getting prepared for the day tomorrow. Today was a good start in helping the community, I think at least.

  1) I rolled no downtime events, no random encounters, so it was just a simple day of crafting.

  2) I basically treated the assistance in the investigation as a skill challenge, at CR 1.

The character doesn't know this but today is when Bruce Banner and Tony Stark go to Mexico to make Bruce a lab, and a bar.
