Chapter 16. Interlude 1

Percival held his hand towards the sky, shielding his eyes from the glaring sun. He took in the view of the steel picket front gates of the Caraway royal academy and turned towards his twin brother with a wide grin on his face and said. “ We are finally here Roland, after sixteen years we are officially free from our estate, we can finally ease up that insufferable act.

Roland ran his hand through his medium long chestnut hair before replying. “ Yeah, it will be so liberating to get away from our parents and all those damned tutors. We might still have to keep the act up for certain people still though. So do you believe we get the chance to meet real life elves or even beastkin now that we are attending the academy?”

Percival blew a raspberry before he spoke and held his fist out for a bump. “ Amen brother. But it shouldn't be too difficult to keep a tiny front up, just don't say anything outrageously outlandish, or correct the teachers whenever they say things we know to be wrong. But why would we meet elves or even beastkin here? It's not like this is a public school for everyone, I doubt they have exchange students programs here, This is the top academy for the human nobility after all.”

Roland bumped his fist before saying. “ What do you take me for? Like we haven’t gotten away with it so far, if anything we can just blame it on having our special twin language, also Remy already knows. You know he will step in if needed, he is willing to do anything to keep probing our heads for information. And I know this is a school for the nobility, I just really want to meet any of the so-called fantasy races. It is disappointing that we haven't seen any of them, and we are supposed to be in a magical world. What I wouldn't do for the chance to meet a sexy elven girl, or even a cat girl. Imagine that, a girl with pointed ears, a tail, and holding her paws up while saying nya, how cute wouldn't that be?."

Percival hit Roland’s shoulder and hushed the boy, as he whispered. “ Don’t call him Remy like that out in public the, imagine if the wrong person heard you. If you absolutely have to talk about him out in the open, at least use his proper title. Also what the hell is wrong with you man, you watched way to much anime back home. I already feel pity for any beastkin you meet, this isn't a damn anime where you are required to make a harem to defeat the demon king you know."

Roland just rolled his blue eyes up in an obvious dismissing gesture. “ Come on, take that stick out of your ass, you know as well as me that he likes our little nickname for him. He absolutely hates the formalities, and addressing him with a full title outside formal settings is only pissing him off. And what is wrong with dreaming a little? When you are isekaied into a world with magic and fantasy races, you just have to dream a little you know."

Percival crossed his arms in stubbornness and said in a stern voice. “ Our tutors pressed us for years to keep up the proper etiquette, at least try to uphold it, especially when we are out in the open like this. And you have to put a lid on those wierd fetishes of yours, if you create a diplomatic incident for being a pervert I'm gonna give you a middle fingered salute before I hide."

Roland’s retort was interrupted when the front gates opened. A short blond boy with copper blond hair came towards them. The boy was dressed in an elaborate blue coat, with gold lances, golden sleeves and buttons.

Percival bowed towards the bow and greeted the boy. “ Good morning, your royal highness. It is an honor that you took your time to meet us here.”

The boy scowled at Percival, and replied. “ Man really? Can’t you just cut that formal shit out? Especially when it’s only us three here, maybe take a side out from your brother's page and just call me Remington, or even better just Remy.

“Maybe he thought that the groom of the stool was just behind you, ready to clean up after you if you have an accident in your fancy pants.” Roland bursted out in fits of laughter.

Remy held his laughter back as he checked out his own outfit and groaned in response. “ It is a bit much, I know, but mom practically forced me to wear this today. She insisted that I had to look my best for the entrance ceremony later.”

Percival nodded in agreement to Remy’s words and replied. “ But it is important for someone with your status to look his best in formal situations. The academy will make a big deal about the crown prince studying there. And isn't it best to be formal here? We are out in the public after all, keeping up appearances can only be good for us.”

Remy let out his breath in resignation and said in a defeated tone. “ Yeah yeah, you might be right, but you have no idea how insufferable it is when everyone is standing on their toes around you. And it's always my prince here, your highness there. You guys are more like my friends than subjects, it's refreshing. Roland even dares to mock me whenever he has the chance.

Roland gave a mocking bow and said in a sarcastic tone.” Serving my royal fancy pants is my duty as a peasant.”

Percival, face palmed himself at the sight of his brother's idiocy and spoke in an annoyed tone. “ You a peasant? You are the son of a Marquess, You are even third in line of succession for that title. The day I see your lazy ass out in the field, doing peasant work is the day I join aunt Agatha to knit, and I'm gonna knit you a condom for you to use, I will even lie and insist that there is protection magic in the threads, so you will run to the nearest brothel to test it out."

Roland scowled and replied. “ Should have been second in line, just because you were born six minutes before me. You know as well as me that I'm five months older than you, at least in life experience. It's unfair that we can't count our time on Earth.”

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

“You know you would be nearing your forties now if that was the case, you would be an old man and you might even be balding by then” Percival said half laughing.

“Oh yeah, let's not do that then, Eloliria for the win! New world, new opportunities. Roland stated as he held his arms up in a victory pose.

Remy let out a belly laugh in full force, Percival and Roland just watched the laughing boy until he had gotten it out of his system. After getting his breath back, he finally said. “ Seeing you two bicker is always entertaining and I would have laughed my ass off at the sight of Roland being bald. But besides guiding you two to your assigned room on campus I had something important we needed to discuss. Let's talk while we walk, there is still a over an hour until most people arrive at the grounds, so it should be safe to talk in the open.”

Remy started walking into the academy grounds, and turned to see if the others followed. Percival and Roland tensed up and shared a look between each other. They both nodded in unison and followed the prince into the grounds and the gates closed behind them. Percival cleared his throat and asked nervously. “ What is this about Remy? When the prince declares that we have something important to discuss, I can't help being a little nervous.”

Remy waved his hand in a dismissing fashion and said. “ Don't worry, it is not anything bad, if anything the entire thing will be great for you guys. But first I have to apologize, I have broken a several year old promise I made to you both. I've been thinking about this quite a lot, and I didnt break my promise lightly.”

“What did you do Remy?” Roland asked, a hint of anger in his voice.

Remy scratched the back of his head, and nervously replied.” Well, you see. I might have told my Father the truth about you two. After listening about what your so-called technology could achieve for years, my mind has been racing in ways we could implement some of those things here. I tried my best to describe several of the things you have told me about, enough that my Father actually believes that you two have otherworldly knowledge. He wants to set up a meeting to discuss the development of several things you two have spoken off.

“ Why have you done something like that? You promised years ago that you would never talk about any of the things we told you. We only told you because you more or less figured that something was off with us, we couldn't excuse our use of English whenever the Queen arranged our playdates. We wanted to avoid as much attention as possible, the entire thing sounds like some madman’s rambling.” Percival said with a scowl on his face.

Remy held his hand up in surrender and replied “ I'm very sorry about breaking my promise but my Father truly believed what I told him, apparently there are several books about other worlds in the library of the old empress. There is something he doesn't tell me, but he has several scribes working non stop on translating the old texts there. When I mentioned your idea of creating a tavern in the hope to find others like you, he wanted to fully invest in your endeavor. He even went as far as suggesting he might want to give one of you a position as an royal advisor. He was unusually excited by the entire thing.”

“What?” The twins said in unison. Percival took a step towards Remington and grabbed his shoulder and looked directly into the blue eyes of the prince as he spoke. “ He actually believed our story? The entire thing sounds unrealistic. If I didn't have Roland to talk to about this stuff, I would have started to believe that my entire previous life was a figment of my imagination. After sixteen years things are starting to feel so distant.”

“Yeah, you have no idea how weird it feels to be born again with your memories intact, and then your twin brother is starting to wave and point to things while we were in our cribs.” Roland interjected.

Percival waved his brother off and took up the conversation.” So how will this work? Having an audience with the king himself sounds kinda scary you know. Also he wanted to invest in the tavern idea? That was a far-fetched idea from the start, what does he possibly get out of that?

Remy smiled and answered in an excited voice. “There are several things, firstly he wants to show goodwill towards you guys. Secondly, if the tavern idea works out, there will be several people from your old world gathered there. And they might have their own speciality from your world, and that will go a long way towards developing future technology. Also he isn't inviting you for a public audience, it won't be any stiff formalities. He only wants to discuss what type of information you can provide and then what kind of support he can provide. I'm certain the entire thing will be beneficial for you two.”

Percival grinned from ear to ear as he replied.” This might not be as bad as I feared. As long as the information about us doesn't become too widespread, I'm sure we can guide the development of some things in certain ways. But you mentioned the library of the old empress? I thought everything from that old empire had been destroyed.“

“ That is what he wants people to believe. The old library has been preserved and is restricted. The knowledge of that place is considered a crown secret, and I shouldn't even tell you guys. But I know he wants you guys to have a look, and hopefully your knowledge might help the scribes to unravel some of the secrets in there. The last couple of years he has been heavily invested in figuring out everything he could about that old empire and that infamous empress. He is almost obsessed with it now, I’v tried to ask him on several occasions, but he always says that I'm too young and that I will know when the time is right.” Remy responded with a touch of worry in his tone.

Roland frowned and asked.” Did the old empire have advanced technology or something? All our tutors taught us about the old empire is that they enslaved the entire population. They put the main focus on how humans, beastkin and elves united in the rebellion against the empire and their oppression.”

Remy just shrugged as he answered. “ I don’t really know much more, it is ancient history after all. I’m sure my Father knows more, the way he is obsessing about the library. He might tell you more if he brings you into the library. I've only heard him talk about it, I haven’t actually seen it myself yet.”

“This sounds weird. It is almost like there might be a conspiracy behind the entire empire thing. It seems like everything about the old empire has been wiped off the history books, and they only tell us about the successful rebellion. There was an old saying back home. History is written by the victorious.” Percival said with a thoughtful expression.

Remy frowned at Percival's words before replying. “ There is definitely something about that saying. I wish I knew more, but you should forget that I even mentioned the library, and you need to act surprised when Father brings it up. I take it you are interested in having the discussion then?”

Percival and Roland shared a look between them and nodded slowly at each other before answering in unison. “ Yeah, of course.”

Remy just smiled at his two friends before answering. “ Great, my Father will be delighted. I will set up the meeting this weekend. But we should really hurry up, if I'm gonna show you to your room before the entrance ceremony starts.”
