Chapter 22: Eavesdropping Outside the Door

Chapter 22: Eavesdropping Outside the Door

The anesthetic was wearing off bit by bit, and the pain came flooding back. Her entire body ached all over, especially her legs. Ye An Ning let out a soft cry, wanting to touch her own legs, but Tian Xin Nian stopped her with one hand. "Your leg is injured, don't touch it."

Ye Anning nodded with a wry smile, seeing Tian Xin's worried and guilty expression. She took a deep breath and suppressed all her pain, "It's nothing, it doesn't hurt that much actually. I've been a bit too sensitive lately, getting injured during taekwondo practice is nothing."

Tian Xin looked at her with an unbearable gaze, tears gathering in his eyes, "An Ning, this isn't just a little injury..."

"What's wrong, why are you crying?"

"Peace..." Tian Xin Nian wanted to speak but stopped, unsure of what to say.

"Oh no, I just can't stand it when others are being overly cautious! Am I seriously hurt? Is anything missing?" Ye Anning lifted her head and examined herself from head to toe, seemingly not missing any arms or legs. Tian Xinnian hastily pressed her back onto the bed, "Don't move around, the doctor said... your leg is more seriously injured, if it doesn't heal well, there's a high possibility that in the future you won't be able to walk."

Ye Anning was taken aback, and for a moment the overwhelming fear that flooded her was suffocating. But it only lasted for a moment. She fell silent for half a beat, then suddenly burst out laughing. "Oh my, what's with that expression? The doctor said if I didn't recover well... but I'm recovering better than expected, isn't that enough? Besides, it was just a car accident! I thought I was done for, but I survived against all odds - that means I'll definitely have good fortune later on! My life is spared, what's the big deal about my leg? If it's crippled, so be it!"

Ye Anning wanted to comfort Tian Xinnian, seeing her eyes red like a rabbit's, she knew she must have cried all night with guilt and self-blame. But how could Tian Xinnian be at ease? Things were not as simple as she said, Ye Anning was still so young, if she became disabled, what would she do in the future?

"Hey, don't make a sour face, okay? After all, I saved your life. Come on, little girl, give me a smile." Ye Anning tried to tease her into smiling, but Tian Xinnian only had a bitter smile.

"Hey, must you be like that? If I were in your shoes, would you save me? I'm sure you'd push me away too. It's just a matter of luck, don't think about it anymore. Now, I'm the one who saved your life, so from now on, my three meals a day are all up to you. And by the way, you know no one takes care of me, so when you're free, come keep me company." Ye Anning picked up an apple from the table and started crunching away.

"Alright, what do you want to eat now? I'll go make it for you." Tian Xin asked with a forced smile.

"Big bone soup, isn't it said that you supplement what you eat? Add more bones, I haven't had this for a long time."

  "Good."

"Alright, just come over in the evening, take a nap at home first, you probably didn't get much sleep last night, almost became a panda."

Tian Xin Nian smiled and nodded, but unexpectedly saw Pei Jun at the door. Pei Jun didn't show any embarrassment of being caught eavesdropping, and nodded to her, "I'm now Ye An Ning's attending physician, she's awake, right? I'll come give her a thorough examination."

Tian Xinnian didn't suspect anyone else, and with someone she knew taking care of Ye Anning, she felt even more at ease. She shifted her body to the side, "Anning is awake, I'll go home and cook some soup for her. If anything happens, notify me immediately."
