Standing in the middle of a large, frozen landscape, an army surrounding him at his back, front, and both flanks, Xavier watched as two portals on either side of him appeared—portals big enough that not a single one of his enemies ranged attacks would get through.
The attacks slipped straight through the portal and fell back on those that had cast them. The twin portals to the ones he had created had materialised directly above the ranged attackers.
Dozens of kill notifications swept into his vision, but he saw that it didn’t take long for protective barriers to be created above the ranged attackers, as support classes did their work.
“Your chance to surrender is dwindling,” Xavier announced, projecting his voice as far as he could.
“Your tricks will gain you no reprieve from death!” the swordsman called back.
The man had been leading his melee fighters toward Xavier. After what Xavier had done, the D Grade swordsman started to tear away from his people, running faster, looking to wish to engage Xavier all by himself.
Xavier released a sigh. He supposed it was time to take off the kid gloves.
The army would be aware of the fact that he could use Willpower Infusion, which meant they would have some way of stopping him from using it—some device, or some spell. All he would need to do was knock the source of that out.
Xavier wondered, for a moment, how he was going to incapacitate these people on a large scale without causing their deaths.
I also have to wait two hours before taking them off this world…
He rolled his head around his shoulders, producing a satisfying crack. Maybe the kid gloves needed to stay on—at least for a little while.
Xavier didn’t close the portals at either side of him. The ranged attacks stopped coming, at least for the moment. The leaders of these two armies seemed content to let their melee fighters finish the job.
Xavier couldn’t help but look at all the D Grades surrounding him and think that it was definitely overkill on the part of his enemies.
Xavier rested a hand on his Companion Cube. The dragon was no longer residing inside of it. Xavier had him patrolling the surrounding area, looking for threats. He may not have a full plan of how to deal with these people, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to gain as much information about the place he was fighting in as he could.
Any threats out there, Volkarin? Rhaalir?
Xavier had the elf spirit patrolling the area as well—not inside of the Spirit Golem, however, so that there was no chance of him being spotted.
Nothing but weakling beasts, and weakling Denizens fighting them, Volkarin said. Shall I keep patrolling, or may I hunt and kill and rend flesh?
Keep patrolling. There will be plenty of opportunity for killing later.
Xavier received only growl of assent in response.
No sign of anything, Rhaalir put in. You’re in the clear to do whatever it is you intend to do.
Xavier smiled, then nodded.
He cast Time Alteration. The time dilation field was one of the largest he’d ever created. It encompassed the entire army. His Chronomantic Mindforge spell didn’t have a terribly long cooldown in the grand scheme of things, but the time it did take was simply too long to achieve what he’d just thought of doing against these people.
The army didn’t seem to notice anything amiss after the spell was cast. Either they couldn’t see the bubble of time, or they were too focused on charging at him. Either way, it wouldn’t matter even if they did notice.
Xavier got to work.
Chronomantic Mindforge!
He drained the energy from the swordsman at the head of the pack first. These people were significantly weaker than him, even this man, who was likely one of the most powerful of their number at Level 185.
Time froze, for only Xavier’s mind, as he tore the energy away from every single one of the man’s cores.
Once he’d done this, Xavier closed in on his enemy and broke both his legs with his bare hands, moving so swiftly that the fighter hadn’t even seen him coming. He moved the portals alongside him as he ran, protecting him from the ranged attacks of those Denizens at his flanks.
The swordsman’s eyes widened as his legs were turned the wrong way. Xavier felt the fear in him.

He moved on from the man. These people would be able to cultivate more energy, but it would take time, and before they could truly use it for anything, they would need to heal their wounds.
The Time Alteration spell quickened time within the field, making it so his cooldown for his Chronomantic Mindforge spell was negligible. Though he made a critical mistake going after the melee fighter first—the man’s legs were healed rather quickly by the support classes. The instant the man had been hurt, he’d been summoned away to be treated at the flanks.
Of course. Always deal with the healers first.
All was chaos for a time. The enemy army had a dozen devices to stop his mind control spells. They brought them out only a few seconds after he’d used Chronomantic Mindforge, as though they’d been waiting for him to do something like that.
But Xavier crushed each and every one of them the moment they made an appearance.
In anticipation of the scope of this fight, Xavier had finally looked into upgrading his Farscope ability. He hadn’t known how many fighters the enemy would bring, but he had known that the field of battle might be a large one.
Previously, the Farscope had been at only a 100-metre radius. Xavier had spent a great deal of Spirit Coins to increase that to 1,000-metre.
Once he’d done it, he’d wondered why it had taken him so long to get around to it.
Having an awareness spread that far had taken him a little bit of getting used to. He was glad for the fact that he was already very practiced at splitting his mind into several parts, because it helped him better take in all of the visual stimuli that he was receiving, and he was receiving a hell of a lot of that. Ten times us much as before he’d gotten the upgrade.
The Farscope could take in the entire radius of the battlefield, and, incidentally, everything that was inside of his time dilation field was visible to him.
Xaiver felt like some kind of omniscient god. At least, within this small domain. He used his superior speed along with his ability to create portals to easily dispose of the devices that tried to prevent him from controlling his enemy’s mind.
Once Xavier had used Chronomantic Mindforge on an enemy, along with injuring them—breaking several of their limbs—their minds were incredibly vulnerable. Pliable. Easy for him to control.
That was where his Willpower Infusion spell came into play.
Xavier had to muddle through the enemy lines, getting up real close to them for his plan to work. Up this close, it was difficult—close to impossible—for him to use his portals in a defensive manner. He’d done it when incapacitating the D Grade swordsman, but that had been because he was ahead of the pack, with plenty of space around him.
That meant enemy attacks were coming in swiftly, and he wasn’t focusing all that much on evading them. It was difficult to evade thousands of attacks coming from hundreds of D Grades at once.
The damage he took was far more than he had imagined it would be. Xavier had an incredible amount of Toughness for someone at his level, and it wasn’t only that working to his advantage. His attributes were highly attuned, further strengthening his defences.
Then, on top of that, he had his Body Cultivation spell not only reinforcing his skin, bones, and muscles, but actually helping him along with the healing process.
Even so, with the number of attacks coming his way early on in the fight, his health dipped down to 60 percent faster than he could have imagined.
Each attack only did a small amount of damage to him, but cumulatively… It was a hell of a lot.
Still, that didn’t stop him. It also didn’t make him feel any less invincible.
He was fighting against an entire army, and in the grand scheme, they were barely putting a dent into him—he didn’t have to resort to using health potions, nor did he resort to giving some energy to the healers that were not under his mental command to use to heal him, because the more enemies he immobilised and took under his control, the less attacks that came his way.
Xavier didn’t even bother using Soul Block, which he knew would blunt many of these attacks as well.
His strong health regeneration was eventually powerful enough to fight against the tide, especially with his Body Cultivation spell making that work even more efficiently.
In the end, Xavier had an entire army cowed and under his control. He had, somewhat regrettably, killed a good number of the enemies along the way. Some of them had been a tad more fragile than he’d realised, and his attacks had done more than simply break limbs. He’d had to make sure to pull back his strength so that would stop happening quite so much.
When all was done, Xavier came to stand in the middle of the battlefield. He couldn’t remember the last time he had this many people under his control. The mental strain was immense, for he had never controlled so many that were this powerful, but there was little that they could do to fight against his influence, not after he had softened each one of them before taking them over.
Without even a drop of energy in any of their cores, and with the toll the physical damage took on them, he had full control over everyone in that field.
Xavier raised his chin, surveying the army—two armies—in front of him.
He eyed the swordsman. One of their leaders. The man lay on the frozen ground, eyes blank, staring into nothing. Xavier pulled his control away from the man and stared down at him.
This was the Denizen he planned to kill for Class Grafting, but… He wanted to see if the man had anything so say.
The swordsman blinked, his focus returning in a mere instant.
“Do you still think I should surrender?” Xavier asked, his voice quiet, and surprisingly gentle, as he stood over the man.
The D Grade swordsman had fear etched in his eyes. It wafted off him in waves. But there was something else in those eyes, too. Something Xavier saw in his own. Determination.
The swordsman spat on the ground before Xavier, his saliva melting a small hole in the snow. “Kill me. Have done with it and kill me.”
Xavier raised an eyebrow. That was exactly what Xavier intended to do. To kill this man, and to cause the deaths of both armies before him. He had defanged each and every one of them. They were no longer a threat to him.
He could walk away, let them all be free.
But he hadn’t told them to come here. He hadn’t forced this fight to happen. He hadn’t gone to their home worlds and attacked their people.
All he’d done was let some information slip that he would be in this place, at this time. Each and every one of these Denizens had come here to either capture, or kill him, and they wouldn’t have given his death a second thought.
This is what living in the Greater Universe does to a person.
Xavier had to be ruthless, for there were threats out there that he couldn’t even imagine. And the true threat—the ultimate threat, that he was confident he would live to one day face—was one that would destroy his entire universe.
He couldn’t hold back. He couldn’t let himself become too soft.
“Gladly,” Xavier said.
Xavier used Soul Strike. It wouldn’t leave a wound on the man when his death came.
He needed to ensure the body wasn’t too damaged for its intended use.
