Ruby, The Orphanages Godmother

It has been 3 years since Emilia showed up at our door and she’s been the most wonderful girl I have ever taken in this orphanage. Honestly, I wish every child was like her. Calm, happy, and listens. She has been wonderful and a bright spot in the whole orphanage.

The story of how she came in is still baffling to me. I was asleep when she was dropped off, but luckily Abigail was still recovering from one of her night terrors when she heard the knock on the door. She told me about it when I woke up the next morning.

“Ms. Ruby. I don’t know if I was able to bring her in. She was left alone at the door.”

“What do you mean?” I was confused with what she meant.

“Come here.” She turned and walked down the stairs. I followed her to find out what she was talking about. We walked into the living room, and I saw a basket on the table. When I walked up it was little Emilia in it. I was shocked to see another baby at my door.

“I hope you’re not mad I brought her in. It was storming last night, and she was alone.”

“There was no one around to take her?” Abigail reached in and grabbed something inside the basket.

“There was a note.” I grabbed the note from her and began to read it.

  “To whom it may concern,

I want to apologize for leaving her here on your doorstep so suddenly. We cannot take care of her and need someone who could take her in and love her like we never could. Please raise her right and love her like we never could.

  Signed, JA

PS: Her name is Emilia Reinhart.”

I took her in because I knew if I could help even slightly in this world, I knew I would take care of her. Since then, she has been a bundle of joy. I would want my kids to act like her if I get the chance to have kids with that special someone.

Abigail helped me raise her. She likes Emilia because she took a liking since she was the one that brought her into the orphanage. Ironically, Emilia has become more of a deal breaker for Abigail’s potential boyfriends since if they don’t like Emilia, she immediately breaks up with them.

Emilia learning to walk was cute because she was playing with a stick and used it to prop herself up as she walked over from Abigail to me. It was so cute as her black hair was covering her face. The hair on her shoulders had turned a brighter red, looking like it dyed. I cut her hair but when it grew back it turned red again.

She walks around the house now and tries to walk up and down the stairs, but it takes her a minute. Honestly, it’s cute to see her around us and brightening everyone else’s day. She is always around as I help set up an adoption for other kids. She has been looked at for adoption, but Abigail won’t let her get adopted.

“As long as I’m here, she stays.”

“That makes it harder for you and her to get adopted.”

“They asked you to raise her, not anyone else. So as long as I am here. I will raise her with you.”

“Okay Abigail. I won’t put her up for adoption.” Her stubborn nature makes my job harder because that essentially makes me her godmother, but I guess I’m okay with that. She is such a wonderful little girl, and I signed up for stuff like this when I became the godmother of the orphanage.

If only Abigail could get adopted, but I don’t think that’s going to happen anymore. She’s getting too old, and most parents want a young child for adoption. She helps around the house and takes care of the other kids so it’s not a bad thing, but I really wish someone would’ve adopted her. She is a wonderful person, and she loves to help, but I wish she could’ve had a proper family.

Unlike Abigail, Emilia will have somewhat of a sister to raise her. Abigail loves her and I’m sure she will teach her everything she needs to do to grow up strong and happy. I tried to do that for Abigail but when more kids started showing up, I kind of neglected her. I still love her like all my children, but she was my first orphan.

I wonder where she would be if she was adopted. And if Emilia would get the love she needs to be happy. I guess we will never know.
