Ep. 1267 The Empire Part 1

Lin says "That sounds like a good idea. It isn't a good idea to try for too much at once. Slow and steady is a much better plan, but that usually isn't your style. Why are you being cautious?"

"Because I am worried about what will happen to the beastmen after I die. If I build a strong foundation for them, the chances of the nation surviving after me will increase. It should also make things easier for you and Myria. As my queens, it will be up to you to try and hold things together."

Lin says "That's true, but it is also something I don't want to think about. Besides, you first have to make us your queens. So, when are we going to have our wedding? Assuming that you still want to marry me?"

"Of course I do! Nothing is going to prevent us from getting married! We can have the wedding as soon as I pull my troops out of the empire."

Lin says "That should be fairly soon then, right? I need to know ahead of time. Everything is already planned, but we need to send out the invitations."

"How much advance notice do you need?"

Lin says "According to Myria, a week at least. Two would be better."

"Okay, I will keep that in mind. Once I get back to the fort and get updated on the situation, I will figure it out."

  Lin says "Alright."

"Don't worry, I am not going to run away or try to avoid it. I do want to marry you and I will make sure it happens!"

Lin says "Good! I guess I won't need the spell that I created to hunt you down then."

  "You did what?!"

Lin laughs and says "Just think of it as an insurance policy!"

"Well, you won't need it, but that is still slightly terrifying!"

Lin smiles and says "You don't need to worry about it, as long as you don't run away. I created it just in case you get cold feet at the last minute."

"That isn't going to happen. I am not nervous at all about marrying you. Or Myria for that matter. My concerns are all about being the king and the things that I am likely to screw up."

Lin says "Well, luckily for you, once we are your queens, Myria and I will be able to help. We will do our best to keep you from screwing anything up too badly."

Yui says "I will also be helping out. In fact, we have already started."

  "Started what?"

Lin says "Since you are making the elven city the capital, we placed one of Yui's sensors down there. She has been keeping an eye on things and building a list of people with useful skills. This will come in handy when it comes to building the government. It will also allow Yui to keep an eye on the government and prevent corruption."

Yui says "That does mean that you are going to need to decide exactly what type of government you want to have. It is better to start building it sooner rather than later."

"Um, I don't really know what type would be best. I am open to suggestions, if you have any?"

It turns out that both of them have a number of suggestions to tell me. Lin's suggestions are mostly about the organization of the upper levels of the government. Yui's suggestions are more about the finer details and what kinds of government work best.

After listening to everything the two of them have to say, I make my decision. We are going to have a monarchy with various ministers under us and then the governors beneath them. Then the governors will have ministers of their own and the mayors beneath them.

By doing this, we will spread out the power enough that corruption should be limited. Even those who do become corrupt will be unable to do as much damage due to limited power. There is no such thing as a perfect government, or one without corruption, but we try our best.

We don't worry about the laws for now, we focus on the structure of the government. The hardest part is figuring out how to balance the power of the various positions. If the power is balanced, then the positions will keep each other in check, for the most part.

This is all stuff that I had been avoiding because I didn't want to deal with it. However, with Lin and especially Yui helping, it is nowhere near as bad as it could have been. By the time we have worked everything out, it is late enough for Lin and I to have dinner.

As we are eating together, we talk about other, less dry subjects, but nothing too serious. Once we are done eating, we head to our suite to spend some quality time together. I find out that all the talk of our marriage has gotten Lin really worked up.

Not that I am going to complain, but she even breaks her own rule about limiting the rounds. Eventually, we end up sleeping in each other's arms and I can't remember ever sleeping better. In the morning, we end up having breakfast in bed because Lin doesn't want to move.

She even remains in bed as she casts the detection spell and then hands it over to me. I end up having to rush out of the tower in order to use it before it falls apart. I still manage to enhance it enough that it should cover the peninsula before releasing it.

I am hoping that it will catch the demons off guard and expose them to others. I already know that some managed to remain hidden last time, probably protected by humans. However, with all the chaos going on in the empire, I am hoping that they stopped hiding.

I just can't imagine a bunch of demons hiding in cellars with all the chaos going on around them. Demons by nature would want to be out amidst all that chaos having fun. That is why I specifically waited a bit before casting the detection spell again.

If demons suddenly appear among the people, the chaos in the empire will reach new heights. While this does present some danger to my people, I trust that they will be able to handle it. Besides, by now most of the slaves should have been located and saved.

Thinking of that, I use the medallion to contact Leonarr and tell him that I will be returning soon. I also ask him to have Muyaun ready to give me a full report when I get back. Out of everyone, Muyaun is going to know the most information, she just might not share it with me.

I still can't be sure as to how much I can trust her, if I can trust her at all. So far, she has followed the rules and seems enthusiastic about the new kingdom. However, it could still all be an act to get me to lower my guard around her.
