Ep. 1308 Preparing for a Trip Part 7

All those still waiting to go through are now gathered in front of the gate making them easier to protect. Even if the barrier comes down right now, it won’t be easy for them to be attacked. The enemy would have to break through the battle line of our troops to reach them.

That is a good thing since with the last magical attacks I used up the mana in the crystal. It is now empty and I am relying on my own mana pool to maintain the gate and the barrier. With that in mind, I send a soldier to have Leonarr come over to discuss what’s next.

  Leonarr says “How long?”

“I can hold the barrier for a few more minutes at most. Less if the magical attacks increase.”

Leonarr says “It’s alright. The troops are in position and eager to fight.”

“Alright. What’s the best way to bring down the barrier? Do you want it section by section or all at once?”

Leonarr says “All at once would be best. It will amplify the shock factor.”

“Okay. Is there anything else that I can do to help?”

Leonarr says “Actually, could you make the barrier one way for a minute before bringing it down?”

“Um, I think I can. Why?”

Leonarr says “I would like to soften them up with a few volleys of arrows before we charge them.”

“Give me two minutes. It will either turn one way, or come down completely.”

Leonarr says “Understood! We will be ready!”

Leonarr runs off shouting orders and I turn my attention to the barrier to see if I can modify it. Unfortunately, I threw the spell together without any structure, so modifying it is complicated. It doesn’t help that barriers are not something I have messed with all that much.

What I do know about them, I learned from Lin, she is the one who knows this magic. If she were here, she would be able to make these changes with no problem whatsoever. Thinking of that, I grab my medallion and give her a call, then I explain the situation.

That’s all it takes, just a simple explanation and Lin already has the answer that I need. She then walks me through the changes that I need to make to the spell, step by step. With Lin’s help I am able to make the barrier turn one way for a limited time.

This makes the barrier slightly opaque from our side and it is only then that I realize the sun is coming up. With everything going on I didn’t even notice how much time had passed. To the human warriors outside the barrier remains a pitch black wall and they can’t tell anything has changed.

They don’t know anything at all until a wave of arrows and javelins come out through the barrier. Then, before they can get over that shock, the barrier drops and they can see my troops. The looks on the faces of the human soldiers when they see my troops is everything I had hoped for and more.

When I see the looks of shock, awe, and terror on their faces, all the waiting is instantly worth it. Even the soldiers who got hit with an arrow stop screaming and stare in shock. Then, before they can even start to recover, Leonarr steps up and lets out a long, loud roar.

Upon hearing that, all the beastmen let out roars together, which creates a wave of sound. The human soldiers stumble back when the wave of sound hits them, but then my troops charge. Many of the human troops look like they are ready to run away, but they don’t get the chance to.

My troops hit the human troops like a wall of angry steel and the humans just fold. They offer almost no resistance as my troops cut through them, it turns into a complete massacre. A few of the soldiers try to fight back, but there is no organization to their resistance.

The beastmen tear through the humans like lions ripping through a flock of sheep. The battle is far more one sided than even I was expecting, the humans don’t stand a chance. I mean I was expecting my guys to win, but I thought the humans would at least put up a fight.

These guys are supposed to be the elites of the empire, I was expecting a lot more. Everything that I have heard paints the warriors of the north as the strongest troops in the empire. They are supposed to be used to fighting the beasts from the north, they shouldn’t be this weak.

Either what I heard was wrong, or these aren’t the veterans that I have heard about. Whatever the case may be, they aren’t going to be able to stop my troops at all. The only survivors are going to be the ones that run away, which has already started.

The soldiers at the back have already seen how things are going and have started to run. They are probably going to be the only survivors and that’s only because we don’t have time to chase them. Some of the humans attempt to surrender, but unfortunately for them the beastmen are too worked up.

Most of them don’t even get a chance to say anything, the beastmen just mow them down. I can’t see everything from where I am by the gate, but I would guess the other sides are the same. I just hope that the enemy commanders don’t manage to get away, they deserve to die.

The commanders were probably at the back, so if they run they will probably get away. The entire battle, if it can be called that, only lasts for less than ten minutes. Once most of the humans are dead, Leonarr lets out a roar that calls back the troops.

Without that, they probably would have kept going and chased down every last human. However, that is not what we are here for, it is just a bonus as far as I am concerned. The priority is still the slaves, although by this point most of them have already gone through the gate.

A few of them stopped to watch the battle, not that I can really blame them for it. They didn’t block the others, so I didn’t say anything, seeing the humans die will probably do them some good. It will also help the others, because there is no way that the story isn’t going to spread.

In fact, I am counting on the story spreading since it will help to unify the army. It should also help to convince the other tribes that haven’t joined us yet that they need to. Mainly, I want the other tribes to realize just how powerful they can be if they all work together.

Part of turning them into a nation is going to be building their belief in their own power. The hardest part is going to be to overcome their tribal beliefs, they are too used to looking down on other tribes. Unfortunately, that is something I doubt that I can accomplish in my lifetime.
