Ep. 1296 Soul City Part 6

With as tired as I feel, I can't use Divided Mind, but I can still do some normal crafting. Since I already designed everything it doesn't take much mental strength. In fact, as my hands work on the crafting my mind is able to rest a little.

Not as much as sleeping would allow, but enough to keep me from getting a headache. After crafting for a couple of hours, I head upstairs to get some food. I find that the kids are all back and are all sound asleep in their nest.

It makes me realize that spending so long in Soul City has thrown off my sense of time. It also makes me realize that I forgot to have Jarvis turn the time dilation off. However, it doesn't look like it caused any problems, at least not yet.

I decide not to worry about it, if something was going to go wrong, it would have already. I quickly get myself some food and head back to my workshop without waking the kids. As I am eating, I am still trying to come up with a fitting name for the mammoth.

However, I am still drawing a complete blank when it comes to elephant names. So I try thinking of male names instead and the first that comes to mind is Kirito. However, as soon as I think of that name my mind goes off on a random tangent.

The tangent makes me wonder if I would be able to teach the mammoth to wield a sword with its trunk. The idea is so amusing that I can't stop laughing for the next few minutes. When I finally calm down, I decide that name will end up being too distracting.

I finish eating and go back to crafting, but I still haven't thought of a name that I like. I know that I should forget about it for a while, but my brain is stuck. No matter what I try to think about, I just keep coming back to random names.

In the end, I use Divided Mind to let half my brain go through names while the other half handles the crafting. At least this way I can still get something accomplished while I search for a name. I quickly go through dozens of names, but none of them fit a mammoth.

I can't use a cute name because it won't fit once the mammoth grows up. Thinking about how big a mammoth is supposed to be, the name definitely has to be masculine. In fact, it is thinking about how big it will grow that finally lets me find a fitting name.

Once I think of a name that I like, I finish the weapon I am crafting and then enter meditation. I go straight to the soul palace and check on the palace and the mammoth. The walls don't look to have grown yet, but the mammoth seems to be doing well.

"Hello little one. I have decided on your name. From now on, your name will be Maximus!"

I was expecting to have my energy drained like when I named my kids, but nothing happens. In fact, the mammoth doesn't seem to have had any reaction either. I guess the rules are different for soul pets, which does make some sense.

  'Pet Status!'

  Pet:

  Name: Maximus

  Race: Ice Mammoth

  Level: 1

  Energy: 0/10

It worked, so at least I have a way to keep track of his status, but what is the energy? I guess that it is referring to the soul crystals, meaning it needs ten to level up. There is only one way to find out, so I take out a soul crystal and offer it to Maximus.

He eagerly takes it from me with his trunk, throws it in his mouth, and starts chewing. As he chews it up, there is a second where his fur turns white and light flashes around him. It makes me wonder why his fur is green when the other beasts were pure white.

The long haired mammoth had brown fur, so maybe it is a trait of the mammoth races. I didn't think much about it at the time, but now I am really curious. I think that I am going to have to find that store again and ask about it.

For now, I check Maximus' status again and see that it is now one of ten. So I was right, the energy required is referring to the soul crystals and that should be how he levels up. Him leveling to two shouldn't cause any problems, so I go ahead and feed him nine more crystals.

  Pet:

  Name: Maximus

  Race: Ice Mammoth

  Level: 2

  Energy: 0/20

I was right and it looks like the amount needed is going to double each time he levels up. What I find curious is that the status doesn't show his HP or MP, does he not have any? Or is it that the system just doesn't bother to display them because he is a pet?

With the crystals I have currently, I should be able to level Maximus up to level five. However, I don't plan to level him up too fast, not until the palace is bigger. It already feels like the space is too small for him, I don't want to make it worse.

So, the plan is going to be to farm more coins, buy more materials, upgrade the space, and then level him up. Since I also need to increase my soul level, it should work out just fine. I just hope that when I am not around that Maximus will sleep most of the time.

Otherwise, I am going to feel really guilty about leaving him in such a small space. I can't even think of anything to create to entertain him, not with his intelligence. If he was smarter, I would set up a TV and all the anime and movies I know.

For now, that will have to wait until his intelligence improves after level ten. I really can't think of anything that I can do for him right now, but I will keep thinking about it. Since he doesn't need to eat, I can't even set out any food for him to eat.

Then again, maybe he is fine with that, I don't know how he thinks or feels. It is just that I would go absolutely insane if I were in that kind of situation. I can't stand being bored, it drives me nuts, but that doesn't mean he will feel the same.

I hope that he is just happy to have some peace and quiet, but until he can talk I won't know. If I can find that shop again, I can ask the employee if they like toys or something. I should also ask if there are side effects from leveling up too quickly.

That way I can properly plan out when to level him up once the palace is big enough. For now, I leave the palace and head into the hallway to do some exploring. As soon as I appear, the black door draws my attention, but I don't want to break my promise.

Instead, I force myself to turn right and head to the first door past the break. I open the door and head through, then wait while my body forms on the other side. To my surprise, when my body finishes forming, I find myself in a huge cavern.
