Chapter 80 - Why are you staring at me all the time?

Lu Yudong returned to bed to read, while Jiang Ci sat by the desk.

Jiang Ci suddenly felt that since both of them loved reading so much, they truly were a diligent and progressive couple.

"Why not read on the bed?" Lu Yudong asked her.

"I'm afraid if I get too comfortable on the bed, I won't feel like doing the laundry later," Jiang Ci replied, feeling a bit like the daughter of Yang Bailao, sympathizing with her own fate of doing Lu Yudong's laundry.

"Doing laundry with such dedication, like hanging your head from the beam and piercing your thigh with an awl, is commendable," Lu Yudong said, turning a page of his book.

The desk in the bedroom was arranged similarly to the one at Grandpa's house, with Jiang Ci's back facing Lu Yudong.

Sometimes Jiang Ci noticed Lu Yudong turned pages quickly, one after another, but other times he took a long time to turn a single page. Whenever he paused, Jiang Ci wondered: What's wrong? Why isn't he turning the page? Did he fall asleep?

She would turn her head to check.

  This happened several times.

Until one time, when she turned her head, she met Lu Yudong's gaze.

"Why do you keep staring at me?" Lu Yudong asked, looking up at her.

Caught in the act, Jiang Ci had nothing to say, so she said, "I'm going to do the laundry."

  She ran to the bathroom.

Doing laundry was a piece of cake for Jiang Ci. She had been washing her own clothes since elementary school and didn't use the washing machine in college because she found it expensive and ineffective. Washing a shirt was no big deal.

She quickly finished washing, didn't wring them out to avoid damaging them for Lu Yudong, and let them drip in the bathroom before hanging them on the balcony.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

His clothes, like him, were quite precious.

When Jiang Ci got into bed, her hands were red and tender. She couldn't help but say, "You looked really good in that shirt earlier."

  "Really?" Lu Yudong replied indifferently.

"Yes, deep blue, gray, and black, you look great in all of them." Images of him in those colors flashed through Jiang Ci's mind, looking incredibly handsome. "Especially once, when you wore a dark gray shirt, several of my female colleagues in the office talked about it for a long time, almost ready to devour you."

"Really?" Lu Yudong's tone remained calm. "If that's the case, buy me a few more."

  Jiang Ci: ...

She just wanted to compliment Lu Yudong. After all, everyone loves to hear nice things. If Lu Yudong was in a good mood, she might suffer less at night. But unexpectedly, Jiang Ci ended up shooting herself in the foot.

"Unwilling?" Lu Yudong turned his head to look at Jiang Ci.

Jiang Ci forced a smile, "Willing, willing, why wouldn't I be? I'll come back later tomorrow night after shopping with Han Lan at New East Mall and buy you some shirts, okay? Or, should I just stay at the dorm tomorrow?"

  "Whatever."

Jiang Ci didn't expect Lu Yudong to agree so easily and was very pleased.

The next day at work, she messaged Han Lan, saying they should go shopping and she'd stay at the dorm.

[Mr. Lu doesn't mind?] Han Lan asked, surprised.

[He doesn't care.] Jiang Ci was very happy.

But Han Lan felt there was something fishy about it, though she couldn't pinpoint exactly what.

As soon as work ended in the afternoon, Jiang Ci and Han Lan met up to eat and shop at New East Mall. Jiang Ci felt like a bird finally seeing the sky, chatting and laughing with Han Lan.

New East Mall was the most upscale mall in Jiangzhou, but after checking a few stores, Jiang Ci felt a bit disheartened. The shirts here were two or three thousand each, and Lu Yudong had asked her to buy "a few."

She couldn't bear to buy even one, let alone "a few."

"Just buy them. After all, it's his money," Han Lan said.

"Even if it's his money, you can't just waste it like this."

"True, it's all your family's money."

"Stop it," Jiang Ci said. Han Lan still didn't know that Lu Yudong's wealth had nothing to do with Jiang Ci.

They browsed several stores, feeling a bit overwhelmed, and were about to check out cosmetics downstairs. Han Lan wanted to buy some toner, and Jiang Ci wanted a set of face masks.

While they were looking at makeup, the first-floor lobby suddenly filled with people rushing in.

Jiang Ci and Han Lan looked over and saw Yin Xuemo entering with a lot of bodyguards. She must have been there for an event, given how upscale New East Mall was.

Seeing Yin Xuemo made Jiang Ci angry. "Let's go, keep looking at shirts."

But as soon as Jiang Ci got on the elevator, she received a WeChat message from Yin Xuemo: [Jiang Ci, is that you? I just saw someone who looked a lot like you.]

  Jiang Ci didn't reply.

Even though she was looking at shirts, she felt uneasy, guessing that Yin Xuemo was already scheming in her mind.

Sure enough, as soon as Jiang Ci left a store, Yin Xuemo caught up with her. "Buying shirts for Yudong?"

"Miss Yin, is your event over?" Jiang Ci asked.

"Yes. Speaking of which, I have several shirts I bought for Yudong, four or five of them. Since Miss Jiang is picking shirts for Yudong, why not take mine too?" Yin Xuemo said.

Jiang Ci frowned slightly, thinking: How childish is Yin Xuemo?

"Sure, since the shirts here are quite expensive," Jiang Ci replied with a smile. "He asked me to buy a few, but I don't want to buy even one, they're so expensive. Please don't tell my husband, or he'll scold me to death."

"I won't, I'll give them all to you. I wouldn't do something like that."

Yin Xuemo thought: It would be great if he scolded you! So naive, falling into my trap over a little money.
