"Uh," the only audible words that slipped through parted lips, "There’s gotta be some sort of confusion. I’m just Cassie. I literally just met Kon-El not too long ago! I mean, there’s no way, right?" Sweat began to tumble at her temples, hands up and splayed as to insinuate the much added uncertainty.
It all fell silent, and Cassie could only regard the subtle nod of Lance while a small finger pointed right at her. This was more-so to assure Kon-El, who too, was pressing the same question — interrogation at its finest.
Wonder Girl inhales deeply, embarrassment utterly streaming at her features. Here she was becoming sympathetic with Conner over the crazed news, practically ready to be that friend, should he need the support. But now? Her heart was palpitating at unrecognizable speeds with bated breaths.
She felt his warm and callous hands over her shoulders, as he continued to anchor his disposition. Frantically, Cassie felt the mental whiplash — swaying her hands hurriedly before her. "Wait, wait, wait! Hold up!" A flush of pink hue befell over her cheeks, eyes widening whilst she smiled awkwardly at the bunch. "It’s not like that between him and I!"
The person who needs help the most right now could be pivoted towards Cassie. Her senses were all nerved, taking a step back. "You mentioned Brainiac, no? Shouldn’t we be concerned with that! I mean, that’s the whole reason why you’re here! Not to play matchmaker, right! Am I
right!"
"Huh? I don’t particularly trust them, but I don’t think that was the intent here." Kon-EL reasons in response to Wonder Girl’s reaction to the moment prior. Then he continues, sharing his personal opinion and giving his companion reassurance. "I don’t think they’re telling the truth about being my biological kids at all. I’m a clone. I don’t even know if it’s even possible for me to reproduce." He argues. However, that draws a curious look from Zor-EL.
"Huh? Clones are definitely able to reproduce. I’m not sure how you’d be any different. I mean... Besides being the combination of two people-" The Kryptonian blonde just barely manages to finish her thought before Lance finds enough of his nerves to speak up again while stepping forward.
"I can prove it." The boy asserts with solemn eyes, streaks of tears on his cheeks, and his hands bawling into fists. The claim shifts Conner’s eyes from Kara to his shorter stature. With a mild contemplative frown of his own, he stares the boy down in several seconds of silence. Then--
"Come here..." Kon-EL softly orders. Though taken aback and briefly hesitating, the boy obliges and approaches. As he does, Conner eases down into a squat. Knees fairly spread apart and his forearms lazily resting on his lap. It’s an adjustment that has him looking up at the child who barely stands a head above his position. "Do you really have proof?" He asks.
"Yeah... I do. My memories." The boy answers. It’s something that makes Kon-EL arch a brow. Not because it sounds ridiculous, but more so because he’s pretty sure that he himself has the power to look into the minds of others.
"You’re a telepath?" Conner questions and the boy nods with certainty.
"You taught me how to use it. I can show you the memories inside my mind." Lance explains.
"Okay. Go ahead. Show me." Kon-EL encourages. With the permission given, the boy’s eyes almost begin glowing until a pale-blue brightness emits from his sockets. In the next instant, a flash overtakes not only Kon-EL’s senses, but also Wonder Girl’s. This likely being the result of the boy’s power amplifying from the mere presence of Conner - an incredibly potent medium that seems to enhance the abilities of others who share similar powers.
When awareness returns, Conner and Cassie suddenly find themselves within a long stretching corridors with countless doors within it on both sides.
"What the...."
"These are doors of my memories. Each one has something different in them. They’re usually the ones I can remember better than others." Lance explains before he moves to approach a random door on the right side. "Come see. This is the day we went out to eat a few days ago." He beckons the two over. Confused as he is curious, Kon-EL approaches. When he’s close enough, Lan-EL, the boy, opens the door wide and steps inside. The older Kryptonian reaches the doorway and his eyes widen at what he sees on the other side.
"Holy cow... It’s a whole city in here!" He announces as he steps inside, passing the boy who’s waiting within. Tall buildings, flying cars, hover cars, and broad daylight paint the surroundings. In the midst of carelessly walking and slowly spinning to look around, he winds up phasing right through a parked vehicle in a parking lot just outside a diner with a sci-fy presentation to it. ’Kan-Eats’ projects from the establishment like a neon sign.
~~~~~~~
A Telepath.
The mentioning of being a telepath and how he so casually suggests it, further inclines the Amazon to put two and two together. Was Superboy a telepath all along? Did he have the potential to read or manipulate minds?
If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
The gears in her head were actively churning, reckoning the times he perhaps read her mind! ’He wouldn’t do that, would he!’ This was definitely going to have to be a topic for another time.
Where Cassie once stood, soon gave passage to a new inviting memory of the young child. ’Was this the mindreading-thing at work? A memory of theirs, perhaps even supposedly ours?’ Her curious watch makes chase at what appears to be simultaneously real and otherworldly. Much like a flood, it captures her peripherals at every turn and crevice. Her head intriguingly spins with her body following motion, capturing the essence of what could be. It was entirely magical and mesmerizing, to put it bluntly.
Now fully emerging herself in the moment, an infinite span of doors appear to her left and right. They reveal to be memory banks, echoes and collections of their pastime — openly and willingly shared to both Wonder Girl and Superboy. The first door to their right draws attention, as the young Kryptonian guides them through the now open portal. Beautifully, the vast rays of the sun cast upon eager eyes — blinding them for only a moment to only then catch a solid glimpse of an ever-expanding city.
Futuristic and clamorous sounds of the Metropolitan simmer though hopeful ears. A pull at each corner of her lips soon form into a candid smile, feet skipping forward and into the open city. "Wow! This is amazing! And we’re only talking what, a few years from now? There’s no way! This completely seems like it’s from an entirely different world!" She then curiously adds whilst turning her frame to face the lot, "Where are we, exactly?"
Before a definitive answer could be made, all recognition fall onto the restaurant nearby as she phases through the several pedestrians strolling on by and into the establishment. "Kan-Eats...? Okay, we’re definitely not in Metropolis anymore, are we?" She gets slightly taken aback, her senses overwhelming by the busy scenario, finding refuge just
behind Conner.
"Right!? This is one heck of a jump in technologic advancement." Kon-EL concurs with Wonder Girl, looking her way as he speaks. Though, when she also spots the name of the diner, she presents an even more interesting notion. One that confuses him. However, Lance sets up to provide clarity to the theory.
"Metropolis? The place dad used to live?" The boy questions. It easily earns the puzzled stare the older Kryptonian shoots his way.
"Used to? Wha-- What does that mean? If this ain’t Metropolis City, then where did this happen? Surely not Gotham City..." Kon-EL tosses out several questions of his own in turn. The boy shakes his head to deny such claims and finally informs the two of where they are.
"No. This is New Krypton. We’re in Kent City." The boy tells them. However, it just makes Conner twice as confused than he was but an answer ago.
"New Krypton!? Like... Like... We’re not on planet Earth right now? This is a new planet?" He prods further. It’s then something that’s moving within the corner of his vision draws his attention. Kon-EL turns his head curiously and finds himself flabbergasted at what he sees - whom he comes to lay eyes on. Himself. Well, more accurately, himself and his children. Korra sitting atop of his shoulders while a memory display of Lance walking beside a much more... Professionally put together variant of himself. From the shaven face, to the jet black suit that holds a sturdy design to it, trailingdown toward knee-high crimson boots, and finally long red cape bearing the House of EL shield on it.
"Is that... Me?" He asks in disbelief.
"Yeah. We came here to meet mom for lunch." The boy informs as he moves to stand beside Conner. The more punk-ish Conner, that is. As the three walk forward to approach the diner, a fourth individual descends down from flying and gently lands upon neon green soles of tall boots. A woman. One whose body possesses a tracing outline of radiant green, including her blonde wavy hair. She’s also wearing a jacket upon her person, which bears the House of EL shield, as well.
"Is that a Green Lantern?" Kon-EL questions with squinting eyes. Nonetheless, he watches as the new arrival and family three finally meet at a center, halting within the parking lot for a moment to greet one another. The young boy among them eagerly shares an embrace with her as words are exchanged. It’s nothing beyond the bunch simply appreciating one another’s company and expressing excitement for having lunch together. Though, a sudden display of affection makes it clear what the Future Kon-EL’s relationship is with the lantern.
"Wooooaaaah... ! Hold up there, buster!" Conner declares disapprovingly as he covers Cassie’s eyes to shield her from the sight, and does the same with the child beside. The offending sight being that of his future self raining down a myriad of smooches all over the ring-bearer’s smiling face.
"Get a room, pal! Jeeze, what happened to having modesty these days?" Conner comments with a shake of his head. Only when the family before them finally resume walking, the boy now holding blonde lantern’s hand, does he finally let the other two observe what’s taking place again.
"And I thought I was over reacting seeing you two do that..." Lance comments with an amused grin.
"Hm." Is the miniscule noise of a response that Kon-EL gives him. As the four pass them by, he gets another view of the lantern from behind again. This time he furrows his brows and squints.
"Hey... Is she wearing my jacket?"
~~~~~~~~~
A light laughter manages to escape between pink lips, her hand playing coy over her mouth. The fact Conner had to shield her view from the much affection before them was a winning tale to save. "It’s you, clearly! And whoever the Lantern girl is, you guys seem very happy! There’s nothing wrong with a little romance, duh! Don’t be such a prude!" She jests at him!
Just before Conner was able to put a mark on it, Cassie recognizes the leather jacket she was adorning. "That jacket she’s wearing seems awfully familiar, don’tcha think? I feel like it kinda suits her, if you ask me!"
Wonder Girl took initiative to embrace the gift of flight, allowing her heels to take journey towards the family — phasing right through them! "This proves there are better days ahead of you, Kon. I’ll take that as a plus!"
"It suits her, huh?" He dismissively repeats just before crossing his arms over his chest. He tilts his head slightly while digesting all that he’s seen within this memory thus far. Then, a question he can’t help but to ask leaves his lips. "...Do I really trade my leather for a cape, though?" He inquires with apparent doubt in his tone. "I mean... I look pretty cool, but... But... That’s kind of a big shift in style." He comments.
"I think you look pretty cool all the time, dad. You even look just like you did in the pictures you showed us." Lance assures. The compliment seems to only manage to earn an eye-roll from the taller of the two.
"Of course you’d say that. You’re just trying to earn brownies points with me." Kon-EL remarks. Then his attention shifts toward Wonder Girl, who seems to be quite enthusiastic about this supposed future of theirs.
"C’mon, W.G. Aren’t we forgetting something here? He said this planet is called ’New Krypton’. Isn’t that weird to you? Why would a planet be named after an old forgotten one? Kryptonians are an endangered race. What’s the point of using a name like that?" Conner reasons.
"I mean yeah, that guy’s wife can totally rock a black form-hugging suit and that jacket, but no way they’re repopulating an ENTIRE planet by themselves." He adds for good measure.
"Huh? Kryptonians aren’t endangered..." Lance corrects while shooting a look of confusion at Kon-EL. Those words draw at the other Kryptonian’s curiosity.
"Huh? What cha’ talking about, Jr.? There’s not even ten of us." Conner counters.
"Yeah! ’Cause there’s a lot more! They all live here, dad." The boy corrects his father again.
"H-how? Better yet, can you give me an estimination of how many?" Kon-EL asks with another arching brow.
"Uuhhh... Well, I think the news channel said that the population hit... 1,717 a few months ago?" Lance answers to the best of his recollection.
"Seventeen-hundred...? How!? What? Kryptonians don’t just magically spawn out of thin air."
"They were trapped in a jar on Brainiac’s ship and you and uncle Kal-EL saved them. That’s what my history teacher says." Lance informs. That bit of information takes Conner for a loop and leaves him staring silently off into the distance. Just for a moment. Then, he turns to exit the memory through the door came in through. No comment to share this time around.
