The virtual sun beat down hard on the two combatants, the heat radiating off the tracks that stretched endlessly in every direction. Maximillion stood grinning, the silver sheen of his Railroad Ray reflecting the light as it charged by his side. The cannon was mounted over his left hand like a gauntlet—its central blaster giving off a quiet hum of energy.

Opposite him, Jin held his Twin Wing Pistols low at his sides, his black blazer and loosened tie flapping in the wind. Though he smiled back at Max, his eyes were narrowed and sharp.

  “Shoot!”

Both competitors activated their speed-enhancing abilities, but Jin's reflexes gave him the edge. His pistols came up and fired a charged shot. Max, slower on the draw, fired his own. The Railroad Ray's beam tore through Jin’s shot with overwhelming force—and slammed into Jin’s face.

Jin’s thoughts: That was an ordinary shot from the rail gun, and it consumed my charged shot. Damn it, that’s a problem.

Jin stumbled but quickly regained his footing, lifting his left pistol and firing again. But Max was gone—vanished in a blink, courtesy of his Speed Boost. Jin spotted a flicker of Max’s shadow behind him and instinctively dodged a surprise kick. Spinning, Jin aimed a shot at Max’s head and fired.

He would have been happier if there was time to charge another shot, but knew Max wouldn’t let him do so easily.

Max took the hit, rolling to regain control. But even as he tumbled, he had already charged another shot and fired at Jin from the ground. Jin narrowly avoided the beam with a fast backflip and landed on one of the nearby train tracks.

  Max grinned wider.

A train roared past behind him. Max leapt backward, landing on the top of the moving train, using the forward momentum to balance. Jin remained where he stood, calmly charging his pistols again.

Another train approached from the opposite direction.

As Max jumped from one train to the other, Jin fired. The charged shot closed in, but Max rolled with the landing, cushioning the impact and started sprinting down the roof of the train toward Jin.

The charge shots were closing in fast.

Both players regained their Speed Boost abilities.

Max, calculating his options, leapt again—this time toward a train three tracks away. He took a hit mid-air, the beam striking his back and spinning him. But he managed to land on the train’s hood, rolling to break the fall.

Jin hissed through his teeth, disappointed the second shot had missed. From his distance he couldn’t make out ever action Max made, but his intuition was telling him that Max was getting ready to -

  BVROOM

A blinding beam fired straight at Jin. He activated Speed Boost, dodging at the last moment.

  Jin’s thoughts: One.

Max ran along the train’s roof, shielding his rail gun with his right hand.

  Jin’s thoughts: Two.

Jin started running perpendicular to Max’s position, building anticipation.

  Jin’s thoughts: Three.

  BVROOM

Another beam shot out. Jin flawlessly jumped to safety without needing to speed boost.

Jin’s Thoughts: Perfect. The rail gun needs three seconds to cool down between shots.

Max leaps to another oncoming train, at the same time Jin begins to charge another shot from his wing pistols. As soon as Max landed on the next train, he fired another rail beam that Jin dodged. While Jin waited to be completely out of the way of the beam before he shot another pair of charged shots.

Max, seeing them coming, activated his second Speed Boost and dove through the train car’s window. Inside, he ducked among the empty seats as the shots pierced through another window behind him.

As one beam struck his shoulder, he spotted another train passing. He slid low, letting the second beam pass over him. Then, he leapt again—this time from one train to another—and fired at Jin mid-air.

But Jin wasn’t where he had been.

Jin had used his Speed Boost to hop onto the same train as Max. While Max lay still, catching his breath and waiting for his next recharge—

He felt the barrel of Jin’s pistol press against the back of his head.

His Speed Boost: Two seconds away.

His Rail Gun: Three seconds away.

Max grinned, knowing he was caught.

Jin’s stance was steady, pistol pressed firmly. We flash briefly to—

A memory: A younger Jin, holding a real pistol to the head of a shadowy figure in almost the exact same stance.

Jin thoughts: Surviving is all I know.
