Chapter 23 - The Letter

Ellis sat at Artificis’ desk in the late hours beyond midnight. The small desk lamp was switched on and the organisation was in complete darkness. Everyone slept soundly and Ellis was the only thing with open eyes. Nothing was heard except for the faint ticking of the desk clock. She took a glass of whisky and sipped a small drop. Frowning ever so slightly, she looked at the letter holder in front of her, noticing its contents. It only contained one envelope. It was old and worn, with dark yellowing around the edges. It looked like it hadn't been touched in years. Putting down her drink, she took it. It was addressed to her, with the writing, “For Ellis Silver's eyes only”. Opening it, she took out the letter, unfolding it.

  Dear Ellis,

If you are reading this, then it means that I am dead. As my final command, I leave Pulvis and its entirety at your disposal. You most likely already know the truth by now so I will not bore you with the tedious details. From this moment forth, the entire organisation is yours to command as you please. Pick a right-hand or don’t, it is your choice. What you do with Pulvis is completely up to you. Of course, I can do nothing to stop you, I can only advise you from beyond the grave. I just hope that you will make the right choices and save yourself from insanity. Believe me when I say this, a position like this will drive anyone insane, even a person with the strongest of wills – that's you that I am talking about. Do not let your anger get in the way of your judgement. Remember, you only die once. Look out for everyone, keep them safe. After all, you are their guardian angel and their only hope of surviving anything that is to come. Like I said, do what you want with Pulvis, just make sure that it lives on. Goodbye.

  Artificis

Ellis stared at Artificis' all too elegant signature and then slowly put the letter down, almost like was afraid to damage it. Placing her elbows on the desk, she interlocked her fingers together and rested her nose onto them. She stared into the dark space in front of her, not blinking for the longest time, trying to process her situation. She then let out a puff of air and put her head down, running her hands through her hair.
