Chapter 08: I Will Protect You

The silence of the night was shattered by the harsh sound of the alarm echoing through Solthar Keep. The deep, resonating bell tolled ominously, signaling the arrival of a new threat. The demon army - from the east, was coming to claim another victim.

Adventurers and city guards scrambled from every corner, rushing toward the east gate to form an initial line of defense. The city’s streets, once quiet, were now filled with the frantic bustle of preparation.

Chase's eyes snapped open at the sound of the alarm, the urgency of the situation instantly jolting him awake. He turned to Selena, who was already up and scanning the outside from the window of their room with wide, alert eyes.

  Chase: What’s happening, Selena?

Selena: Something just happened. People are really lively right now.

Without another word, they rushed outside. The cool night air, sharp with the metallic tang of blood, hit them as they sprinted through the deserted streets of Solthar Keep, the distant clamor of battle growing louder with each pounding heartbeat. The ground vibrated faintly beneath their feet, a tremor from the distant clash of steel. A guard ran past them, his face set in grim determination. He barely spared them a glance before shouting, breathless.

Guard: Demon army’s closing in fast. They’re just outside the east gate! Help us, please!

Chase nodded at Selena, and they pushed forward, the urgency of the situation driving them harder.

As they reached the eastern gate, the scene before them was chaos. The gate was wide open, and a tide of hellhounds, harpies, and monstrous trolls surged forward, attacking the defenders with savage ferocity. Adventurers clashed with the demons in brutal skirmishes, steel meeting claws and magic flaring in the air. The sight of a massive troll hurling boulders toward the line of guards was enough to take Chase’s breath away.

Chase: This is bad… Do you think we can help hold them back?

Selena: We don’t have a choice.

With no more time for words, they dove into the fray. Selena moved with grace and power, her claws slashing through hellhounds like a whirlwind of fury, while Chase fought alongside the adventurers, his sword cutting through the chaos. The air was thick with the sounds of battle: the high-pitched screeches of harpies, the guttural growls of hellhounds, and the thunderous stomps of the trolls as they advanced relentlessly, each step shaking the very ground. The stench of sulfur and decay hung heavy in the air.

Chase’s heart pounded as he saw a harpy swoop low toward him, her talons gleaming in the moonlight. But Selena was quicker, swiping the creature from the air with a swipe of her claws, sending it crashing to the ground.

Selena: You really need to stop attracting trouble.

Chase: (Chuckle) Thanks. I appreciate it.

  The Arch Demon Appears

Under the flickering, smoky glow of the torches lining the blood-stained walls of the city, the battle outside raged on. The air crackled with the energy of dark magic, and the screams of the dying echoed through the night. Adventurers and city guards clashed with the demon forces, their desperate cries blending with the growls and screeches of the beasts. Yet, among the chaos, a more sinister presence made itself known.

From the back of the enemy ranks, a dark shape rose higher than the others - an Arch Demon. It raised its arms, dark energy swirling around its hands like a storm gathering before a downpour. With a twisted scream, it released blasts of malevolent energy toward the city walls. Each strike hit with a resounding crash, shaking the very foundation of the keep.

Chase’s eyes widened at the sight of the creature.

Chase: Selena, we need to stop that thing!

Selena’s tail flicked, eyes narrowing as she assessed the Arch Demon.

Selena: I’ll take care of it.

Her voice was steady despite the impending danger.

With a predatory grin, she dashed forward, her claws flashing in the torchlight as she launched herself toward the Arch Demon. The demon fired off another blast of dark energy, but Selena nimbly sidestepped, her movements graceful and lethal as she avoided the magic. She leapt forward, slashing at the demon with all the raw, ferocious strength she had in her.

Chase, already moving into position, scanned the surrounding area for any threats that might interrupt Selena’s attack. His eyes locked on a group of Hellhounds charging toward her, their teeth bared, eyes wild. He gritted his teeth and unsheathed his sword, stepping forward to intercept them.

  Chase: Not… on my watch.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

He cut through the first hound with a swift, well-aimed strike. Another hound lunged at him, but with a quick sidestep, he dispatched it just as easily. His focus remained solely on the hounds, ensuring nothing will intervene with Selena’s assault. With each strike, his resolve solidified. He would keep her safe.

  Turning Point

Selena’s claws, dripping with demonic ichor, struck again and again, each blow landing with the force of a raging storm. The Arch Demon staggered back, grunting in pain, but Selena wasn’t giving an inch. The demon’s dark energy was no match for her raw strength, and she could feel the tide turning in her favor. She was winning - until the creature unleashed a guttural howl that reverberated through the air.

A blast of eerie, high-pitched sound, like nails scraping across a chalkboard, swept over the battlefield, and in an instant, Selena felt her muscles seize. The air shimmered with an unnatural coldness. Her body froze, her limbs refusing to obey. The paralysis spell took hold, and she crumpled to the ground with a growl of frustration.

  Chase: SELENA!!!

Chase’s voice, with a desperate cry, cut through the haze of her mind, but she couldn’t respond. Her vision blurred as she struggled against the spell’s grip.

The Arch Demon, sensing victory, slowly advanced toward her. Its twisted grin widened as it aimed a powerful magic blast directly at her defenseless form.

Before Selena could even hope for a way out, a flash of movement appeared between her and the Arch Demon. Chase took the shot that was meant for her. His body took the full brunt of the enemy’s magic.

  Selena: NO!!!

Chase was knocked backward, his body crashing onto the ground with a sickening thud.

The paralysis still held her, keeping her from rushing to his side. But inside, she screamed. Her heart pounded with a raw, desperate need to reach him.

The Arch Demon, unfazed by the sudden change in the battle, prepared for another shot. Its twisted form charged the air with dark energy, focusing it on Selena once more to finish her.

But just as the Arch Demon let loose its second attack, a sharp glint of metal flew through the air. A dagger struck the demon’s eye, distracting it long enough for a shield to bash into its side, forcing it back. The demon reeled, giving Selena a fleeting moment to see a new figure emerge - an adventurer, battle-worn but resolute.

The hero-like figure stood tall, determination in his eyes. His party, a small group of adventurers, surged forward to support him. A healer, rushed past the chaos and knelt beside Selena, her hands glowing with the warm light of a healing spell.

The healer quickly dispelled the paralysis, and Selena gasped, her body coming back under her control. Her heart hammered in her chest as she pushed herself up to her feet, her eyes darting back to Chase.

Selena called out to Chase, stumbling toward him. His chest rose and fell, but his breathing was shallow, too shallow. She could see it now - he was badly hurt. If he wasn’t treated soon, he wouldn’t make it.

Selena: Please… you have to help him!

The healer nodded, her expression serious.

Healer: I’ll heal him, but forgive me! I can only do enough for him to survive. My party members might need all my strength in this fight.

  Selena: Please do!!!

The healer laid a gentle hand over Chase’s wounds, her magic flowing into him. As the healing light enveloped his body, Selena could see the life slowly return to his face. He wasn’t out of danger yet, but he could be saved - if only for a little while.

As soon as the healer finished, Selena didn’t hesitate. She scooped Chase into her arms, her strength surprising even herself as she carried him away from the battlefield.

Selena: Stay with me, Chase. I’m… I’m not letting you die.

The battle raged on behind them, but Selena didn’t look back. Her sole focus was on getting Chase to safety. Everything else – everything - could wait.

  The Inn

Chase stirred awake, his body aching from the aftermath of the battle. As his eyes slowly adjusted to the dim light of their inn room.

  Chase (to self): I’m… alive?

He saw Selena standing by the window, her silhouette framed by the pale morning sun.

Her shoulders were tense, her tail flicking restlessly. She stood rigid, fists clenched at her sides, lost in her thoughts. Her gaze was distant, burdened with regret.

  Selena (to self): If only… I was stronger… If only I trained before leaving… Maybe then… things…

Her thoughts were heavy, wavering as she fought to keep herself steady. Chase felt his chest tighten, he can see the pain in her expression cutting through him more than his own injuries.

  Chase: Selena…

She flinched, her ears perking as she snapped her head toward him. Her eyes widened, then quickly narrowed, masking her surprise with irritation. Without another word, she marched towards him, her footsteps heavy with pent-up frustration.

Selena: You… idiot… Do you have any idea how reckless that was? Jumping in like that… You… you could’ve gotten yourself killed!

Chase looked up at her, his expression soft despite her harsh words. Her tail was lashing behind her, her jaw clenched tight, but her eyes were shimmering, betraying the worry she was trying to hide.

She continued her scolding, her voice rising in anger, but the tremble at the end of each sentence gave her away. Her fists tightened, her shoulders quivering.

Chase watched her quietly, waiting for the storm to pass. As her words faltered, she averted her gaze, her hands dropping to her sides. She took a shaky breath, her tough exterior beginning to crack.

  Selena: You… could’ve… died…

Her shoulders slumped, her anger melting away, replaced by fear and guilt. Her ears drooped, and her head bowed, hair falling over her eyes.

Chase reached out, his hand moving slowly, almost hesitantly. He rested his palm on her head, his fingers lightly brushing through her hair.

Selena’s body went rigid, her breath hitching at the unexpected touch. Her eyes widened, but she didn’t pull away. She stood frozen, feeling the warmth of his hand as his fingers gently ruffled her hair.

  Chase: You’re fine. I’m glad.

Her lip quivered, her eyes squeezing shut. She tried to hold it in, to keep up her fa?ade, but she couldn’t. A single tear escaped, tracing a line down her cheek. Her shoulders trembled, her resolve finally shattering.

Her legs wobbled, and she dropped to her knees beside his bed, her head lowered as the tears silently fell. She didn’t make a sound, her body shaking as she fought to control her breathing.

Chase kept his hand on her head, his thumb lightly stroking her hair. He didn’t say anything more, his gentle touch doing all the comforting she needed.

Selena stayed there, kneeling beside his bed, allowing herself to break just this once, letting him see the vulnerability she kept hidden from the world.
