A few Years had passed since the Accident. Katie had healed and her relationship with Dan had taken off. Dan had used the money he earned from his promotion to Police Captain, to invest in land ownership. Dan had helped her out financially, eliminating the need for her to get a job at the Thrift Store. She turned the Dial on the stove and slid the pan off the burner. She slipped the oven mitts over her hands and tug on the door of the oven, embracing the wall of heat that came at her as she bent down to pull the homemade lasagna out. Katie set the lasagna on the counter and turned off the oven. Dan had opened the door to their two story home and set his stuff down.
“You’re right on time, hon. I just pulled dinner out of the oven!” She shouted from the kitchen. Her arms wrapped around Dan’s Torso, giving him a tight hug before letting him sit down. He smiled and reached out for the plate of food that she set down in front of him.
“Thanks hon.” He said, digging his fork into the food. He blew on it softly before stuffing it between his lips.
“Of course!” Katie said, taking a seat at the table next to him. She batted the meat with her fork before stabbing the food. “So did anything interesting happen at work?”
“Just a few tickets here and there. And I caught some guy with possession of drug paraphernalia,” He said between bites of lasagna. ”Thanks for making Dinner.”
“You’re welcome.” Katie replied, finishing a bite of food. ”Oh cool! Did this one run?” She continued, taking a sip of water.
“They always seem to.” Dan retorted, twirling his food around with his fork. ”We caught up after chasing him for a few blocks,” Dan Continued.
“That’s good.” Katie replied, taking another bite of her lasagna. With that reply, the air grew quiet between the two. The only sounds that could be heard in the room were those of the silverware that tapped the plate with each bit of food. Silence would take over the room. Dan chewed his food quietly and pulled his phone up in front of him. His fingers brushed against the screen, sifting between apps on his phone. Katie took a bite of her food and glanced down at her wrist. Dan hadn’t hesitated to buy his girlfriend plenty of jewelry. The Jeweled bracelet that hung from Katie’s wrist was a clear sign of that. The same could be said for the glimmering gold earrings that dangled from her ears.
“Thanks again, hon.” Dan said, breaking the long silence and getting up from the table. He rinsed off his plate in the sink and set it down in the dishwasher. “I’ve had a long night. I think I’m going to turn in early.” Dan gave Katie a hug and took off up the stairs. Katie remained at the dinner table surveying the Jewelry around her wrist. The jewels were beautiful, but the conversation between the couple had grown stale. It was something that Katie had grown accustomed to since her car accident. It wasn’t something that Katie had been particularly fond of. She could hear the distant sound of footsteps hitting the top floor of the house. “Hey Katie?! Could you make sure to throw my uniform in with the laundry tonight?!” Dan shouted from the top of the stairs.

“Yea! Sure!” Katie replied, taking another bite of her food. She got up from the table and cleared off her plate in the garbage. She rinsed off her plate and set it down carefully in the dishwasher. The Ginger haired beauty, set off upstairs to grab the laundry. To some extent, she felt like a house maid. Dan only spoke to her when he wanted her to do something. He humored her attempts at small talk, but stayed to himself most of the time. “Is there anything else you need washed, before I start the load?” she asked, bending down to gather his police uniform from the hamper.
“And my lucky socks if you would.” Dan replied, pointing to the pair of dirty white socks on the floor of the bedroom. “Thanks. Good night,” Dan said in a soft voice.
“Goodnight.” Katie replied, gathering up the socks and stuffing them into the hamper. She hoisted the hamper up and carried it down the hall, folding back the door that covered the washer and dryer. She piled the clothes in along the detergent and turned on the washer, shutting the door behind her. The house was Quiet and the time had come for her favorite show to be on.
Katie made her way back down the stairs and turned on the tv. Her gaze fixated on the show, letting her mind wander off into the show. It was her favorite medical drama. Katie wasn’t a stranger to getting into the shows she watched. “Oh Come on! Why would you go and do that?” she shouted at the tv. Her eyes widened in response to the tv. She let out a loud whimper when the guy on the tv pulled out a gun.
“Could you keep it down for change?! I Have to get 6 hours!” Dan shouted at the top of his lungs from the bedroom. Katie could hear the sound of something hitting what sounded like a pillow.
“Sorry!” She shouted in reply from the couch. ”You know how I get into my shows!”
“I know!” He replied, his voice giving off a stronger hint of agitation. “Could you just do it more quietly?!”
“Fine!” She replied with frustration and annoyance. Katie readjusted her position on the couch, trying to let off just a little bit of steam. She tried to take her mind off her frustration by getting lost in her show. She tossed and turned, finding it difficult to get comfortable. She couldn’t push the frustration out of her mind. She couldn’t fight the feeling that she should be used to it by now, but she wasn’t. This same thing happened almost every night and each time just felt as if it was picking at her patience bit by bit.
Katie needed something much stronger than a good tv drama. She reached in her pocket and pulled out her phone. The timing was perfect for it. Dani would be getting off work right about now at the hospital. She started a text, but something in her brain just told her to call. Even though she knew in the back of her mind that Dan would be upset about it, She didn’t care. She was getting fed up with Dan’s nagging. “Dani?” She asked once the ringing stopped. “Are you busy right now?”
“Oh Hey Kate!” Dani replied, using her shoulder to hold the phone to her ear. ”Not really, No. Why what’s up?”
“Oh nothing.” she said, lowering her tone a bit at the sound of footsteps taking off in the distance. “I was just wondering if you wanted to meet me at the bar after you get off?”
“Of course!” Dani replied. Katie could hear something shuffling on the other end of the receiver. “Umm let me just finish dressing Mr. Marti. . .Ummm Let me finish what I’m doing and go clock out.” She corrected herself.
“Perfect!” Katie exclaimed, hanging up the phone. The footsteps were getting closer. Katie shot a glance to the top of the stairs and scurried to collect her stuff. “I’m meeting a friend for drinks.”
“What the hell did I just. . “ Before Dan could finish his sentence, Katie was out the door. Dan grumbled to himself and turned back around. As far as he could see, This just meant he could finally get some sleep. The time between the car door slamming and the ignition starting wasn’t very long at all. Dan Stomped back upstairs with his angry tail between his legs.
