Chapter XXXV

It didn’t take long for Morrigan to awaken to the idle, worried chatter of her team. Her eyes focused to see Nora and Taylor talking as Stephanie listened intently while Yekku and Mo’Emori sat silently on the other side of Skoll who laid around Morrigan like a barrier.

Her skull throbbed as she tried moving only to wince as Apollyon’s thunderous voice rang in her head.

Well, well, if it isn’t the sleeping goddess. What did we learn this time? Hmm?

Morrigan groaned as she tried to sit up but instead, Skoll’s snout pushed her back into the corner with a whine before his tongue brushed her face repeatedly.

Morrigan sputtered and looked away as she shoved his face away, “Hi sweetie, that’s enough…”

Everyone turned to see she was awake again, Skoll refusing to leave her alone. Nora and Mo’Emori rushed over climbing over Skoll despite his attempt to keep them away with his tentacles.

“Boy, you better move your furry ass or Momma is going to move it for you!” Nora growled shoving one of four tentacles out of her way.

“Mori! I’m so sorry, I didn’t think this would happen…” Mo’Emori apologized as she wiggled her way through Skoll’s entanglement.

Morrigan waved her off though as she looked around to see varying levels of light out of the window of the hold. “Are we still on the ship?” she asked rhetorically as she absorbed her surroundings.

Mo’Emori nodded, “We landed about 20 minutes ago.”

“And, we’re still underground?” she asked.

With a nod from Mo’Emori while Nora grew more intolerant of Skoll’s need to protect Morrigan as she grabbed ahold of one of his ears before pulling just hard enough to force him to ease up with a yelp.

Morrigan sighed amongst the commotion as she focused on her inner self, feeling the same vibration she felt before however, this time she didn't panic.

“Well, this has been a great start…” she thought to herself.

To be fair, it could have been far worse. In fact, it has been far worse, Apollyon responded in amusement.

Morrigan grunted in agreement. She pulled her feet from underneath Skoll before slowly standing, her body aching after the violent reaction to her fear. Nora and Mo’Emori both yelped as he carried both women as he stood up enticing soft laughter from the rest of the team, especially Stephanie who signed, “Smart dog.”

“Skoll, put them down,” Morrigan sighed indignantly as she rolled her shoulders and stretched her neck.

As Skoll set them down, Mo’Emori rushed over and threw her arms around Morrigan as she held back tears of guilt, sucking a cry as she said “I’m so sorry Mori!”

Morrigan knew it wasn't her fault, after all, she never explained the details of her time in Castile V to anyone who hadn’t been there. For her to take the blame stung as Morrigan gently hugged her. “Its okay hun, its not your fault for me still holding onto that stuff…”

“Babe, it’s not your fault either. What happened was… you didn't deserve that,” Nora interjected causing her heart to clench as she rubbed her hand against Mo’Emori’s back, not willing to admit the guilt and shame she felt.

“What uh…” Taylor started before Stephanie back handed his chest and shook her head holding her finger up to her lips.

Yekku, being the darling creature he was, gingerly stepped closer emitting a low clicking noise before wrapping his long lanky arms around both Morrigan and Mo’Emori and burying his face between the both of them.

All of the attention was getting to Morrigan as she felt the stinging heat of blood well in her eyes. Sniffling, she pulled herself from the group hug before looking at Mo’Emori as she reinforced her nerves, “We should get going, your mom is waiting.”

Mo’Emori nodded with a weak smile, her guilt refusing to fade though her smile revealed the subtle excitement she still held onto. “Yeah, and your Mem too.”

  ◇◇◇

Gra’taul Arendal stood stoically in front of his honor guard staring at the Human dropship that sat idly within their vast underground airfield.

To say he was irritated was a gross understatement as he waited for the royal her guest to reveal themselves. As an ambassador, he felt it was unjust to be forced to wait so long, much less be made to play escort to an alien dignitary. If anything, he believed he should be the one paraded through the street to meet with the human the queen desired an audience Auth and yet, House Cirgala always got what it wanted because they had a Seer to be queen.

A long moment later the ramp to the ship lowered to reveal a group stepping into view. The elite forces that surrounded Gra’taul raised their weapons in alarm as several humans and Marmuro’k stepped onto the airfield. To find their old enemy stepping onto their planet once again was an absolute insult however, an odd thing he noticed was that the tall white and blue Kêzi’kan only glared at one another, carrying no weapons and standing stalwart against the 30 energy rifles pointed at them as a nervous Eskarii hide behind the trio of humans.

However, panic nearly ensued as something far more dangerous stepped down the ramp. The sight of a full grown Danth?r stepping out of a human dropship was the pivotal point of fear, the only thing keeping wide spread terror from igniting amongst the group of Eskarii soldiers was the fact their princess walked beside the deadly beast, as if nothing were wrong with the picture.

“By Naestra and Arahan… the twin goddess must be jesting with me…” Gra’taul told himself as even his stern and stoic demeanor finally broke with surprise as he spied the key to the spectacle he had been witnessing riding atop of the deadliest creature known to the Eskarii.

Raising his hand, the honor guard hesitantly lowering their weapons as he stepped forward towards the group of delegates. “This must be some joke…” he thought as he confirmed each identity within the group with his own eyes. There were three humans, three Marmuro’k, their princess and the human Inquisitor that had threatened him so long ago, who rode the blasted beast.

That was also right before the first prince had put his hands on him just so he could raise his bastard child within the safety of the palace.

Gra’taul hated the position he was in. “Princess, we are glad to see you safely home…” he stated as he eyed the approaching Danth?r warily.

Mo’Emori grinned brightly as she waved while Morrigan took in the sight of the wing of Eskarii fighter ships that sat at the ready, dozens of Eskarii eyeing her group in fear and curiosity in the distance.

“Happy to be home! Are you taking us to see my Mem-eni?” she asked excitedly which grabbed Morrigan’s attention.

She scrutinized the man Mo’Emori spoke to before her eyes flashed with recognition, feeling a slight amusement of fate mixed with irritation of seeing the man once again.

Before Gra’taul could respond, Skoll let out a low growl as his predatory eyes focused on the man of his master’s ire, that man jumping back two steps to look up at the creature and woman riding it, his guard shifting closer in preparation to defend him.

Morrigan stroked the fur between the beast’s ears as she snickered, “Its okay sweetie,” she told the creature before looking at Gra’taul, “Its been awhile, Ambassador. I hope you’ve been well?”

Gra’taul could hear the condensation within her tone as he straightened himself out, flattening his robes in frustration as his patience dwindled. “Let’s us go,” he stated before signaling his guard, looking to get his duty over with a fast as possible.

  ◇◇◇

Morrigan and her group were led through the airfield into a tunnel that opened up into a gargantuan, city-wide underground cavern. In amazement, everyone but Mo’Emori looked at every inch of the city in the distance, taking in the sight of the massive city that nearly dwarfed the Void Star.

The sight expanded over dozens of land bridges that connected layers of cityscape, varying sizes of buildings of stone, wood and glittering crystal, all built into a massive central spire that stretched thousands of feet. Everything was accented with shining lights that radiated from crystals embedded into everything, walls, buildings, streets and even signs designed to be street lights giving the city a mysterious and beautiful essence akin to the starscape of space.

Punctuating the ethereal atmosphere, hundreds of chromatic heads gawked and rubber necked in curiosity at the strange folk that came through their home escorted by guards.

Morrigan waved to many, earning wide eyed smiles of wonder from Eskarii children that were seized by their worried parents as they saw her riding on the back of a creature that could lay waste to the entire city if it desired. Mo’Emori on the other hand, basked in the fanfare as she proudly walked beside the hulking creature, seeming to have fully given up on her past prejudices against Skoll.

Mo’Emori gently tugged on the fur of Skoll’s cheek to gain his attention and got him to lower his head, Morrigan eyeing the two suspiciously as they carried on through a wide stone street surrounded by homes and stores of varying sizes and design.

Many of the buildings were stone carved with natural crystals of kaleidoscopic colors that grew from the walls or roofs, precision cut to form elegant designs Morrigan did not recognize. The wood of the doors and window panels were dark with a touch of cream, a curious thing to see as the surface of Escostia was barren as a Terran desert.

A sudden shift in position, Morrigan grasped ahold of Skoll’s scruff as he stopped and sat down in the middle of the street for her to see the worried glances of civilian and soldier alike. Morrigan could hear the giggle of Mo’Emori as Morrigan squeezed her thighs to keep her place on his back, Nora letting sharp chuckle as she recognized what Skoll had been up to.

Raising his tentacles into the air, Skoll let out a deep howl that met every corner of the vast cavern as electricity flashed and flared, dancing between the ground near his body and between his waving tentacles. Every Eskarii nearby jumped back in shock, including the honor guard that escorted them as Mo’Emori cackled with girlish glee. Even Morrigan fell victim to the cackling of Skoll and Mo’Emori as several Eskarii children began cheering and clasping excitedly.

Gra’taul glared at them with disdain as everyone realized the giant Danth?r was not a threat. Morrigan gave him a sly smirk taking great pleasure in annoying the man as Skoll stood back up letting the procession continue.

Seeing so many Eskarii made Morrigan feel better as they traveled through the city towards a massive building. To call it a castle wasn’t quite right as the monumental building sat built into an outer wall of the cavern made entirely of vibrant white crystal. The outer design was cut from the native crystal in oblong shapes surrounded by high walls of intricately carved stone, sentries patrolling with energy weapons along the battlements that kept a close eye on those who approached.

Mo’Emori couldn't contain get excitement any long as she rushed forth ahead of Gra’taul, leaving the group to watch in amusement as she shoved the giant wooden doors that reminded Morrigan of the Cathedral’s large archway with enough force to echo around them.

“We’re home! Mem-eni! Brawder! Mem aní Mo’dyrb, nid’yána carf?!” Mo’Emori exclaimed shrilly, expecting a response from somewhere within her massive home.

Who came running was Torvil with a bewildered and a look of frustration on his face. He met Mo’Emori and quickly, seemingly aggressively, he told her something that silenced the energetic woman.

Even at the minimal distance, Morrigan could see that Torvil looked exhausted which irritated her because she knew how much of an asshole Torvil could be.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

Hopping down from Skoll and moving ahead, fully aware of the tightened grip the sentries had upon their rifles, Morrigan rushed to Mo’Emori, Nora right behind her as they both worried for the Eskarii woman to see Torvil sigh in relief as they approached.

However, when Morrigan reached them, she could hear the quite sob Mo’Emori let out and she slapped Torvil with enough force to cause him to stagger back. The sound of soft clicks responded behind her as the sentries aimed their rifles. Skoll could be heard emitting a low, defensive growl coupled with the hisses of Xol and H?’tet before Torvil raised his hand ordering them to cease their actions.

Mo’Emori turned for Nora and Morrigan to see tears streaming down her cheeks but the oddity was the smile she wore on her face.

“I’m an auntie…” she said at barely a whisper as she reached for both of their hands.

Nora looked at Mo’Emori in confusion before looking at Morrigan whose mouth had dropped in surprise. Morrigan looked to Torvil as he righted himself into his usual stoic demeanor as Nora awkwardly comforted Mo’Emori with a hug, letting Mo’Emori cry tears of joy into her shoulder, unsure how to handle the situation.

“Has it really been that long?” Morrigan asked aloud as she attempted the math within her head before Torvil stepped closer.

“Yes, it has been a while, Mori,” he said as rubbed his cheek with an amused snort.

“Oh, I’m sorry about that. I just…” she started before he waved the notion away.

“It is fine, young Swyn’wyr. If anything, it has woken me up. No one mentioned a child would be as exhausting as it is,” he responded with a sigh that told the tale of the hardship of parenthood.

Nora snorted derisively at that as Morrigan chuckled in amusement, pulling far away enough from Mo’Emori to say, “Dude, I could have told you that, just wait till that start walking and talking.”

Torvil’s eyes widened in horror causing Mo’Emori to giggle and for Nora to grin triumphantly before Torvil’s breath hitched by the coming sight behind Morrigan.

Gra’taul arrived to deliver the rest of her group, including one massive Danth?r who prodded Morrigan in the back. Torvil shifted back on his feet defensively as Morrigan turned with a knowing smile, wrapping her arm around hid snout and patting the side of his muzzle before looking at Torvil, “Torvil, this is Skoll, the Marmuro’k and Taylor and Nora’s sister, Stephanie… and this is Nora, my girlfriend, I guess you never got to meet her last time…” who all greeted him in hand waves of nods of respect except for Yekku who tried to make his way forward to personally greet Torvil, only to be held back by Xol who held onto his tail.

Mo’Emori giggled as softly as she could at the expression on his face, “Its okay, brawder. He’s nice and super soft!” she exclaimed in a forced whisper.

Torvil shook his head and grunted as he looked over the group, “I do not care, my only concern is if everyone can keep quiet,” he stated protectively.

Morrigan smiled sweetly at the notion of Torvil being an overly concerned father, holding up a single finger before looking at Skoll and motioning for Yekku to come to her.

Xol allowed Yekku to go free and as he approached, Morrigan smiled at both of then and said, “Listen, there is a baby inside so we’re going to need to be extra quiet, okay?” Morrigan smiled brightly as she mentioned a baby as the realization that she too became an aunt set in, her excitement rising through the roof between seeing her family as well as a new niece or nephew.

Skoll responded with the softest whine he could muster, which had been surprisingly quiet, and licking her shoulder. Yekku let out soft clicks of understanding before bobbing his head.

Morrigan turned back and gave Torvil a reassuring nod. Satisfied with her promise, Torvil looked to Gra’taul who stood off to the side and gave him a respectful nod, “Thank you. Ambassador. You are dismissed.”

He then turned to Morrigan and her group, “Come, Mother awaits.” A new sense of dread shot up Morrigan’s spine as the distractions of the Eskarii city fell away.

What the hell are you so nervous about? Apollyon inquired with disgust.

As she crossed the threshold of the castle and stepped into the respectfully small room beyond, her nervous rose even higher.

“Because, this is the Queen of the Eskarii and Mo’Emori’s mom! There are so many ways this can go bad and I’m not good at making first impressions!” she responded, insinuating her grievances with herself.

Kid, you are literally power beings imagine, of course you're not going to sit well with others. Everyone fears the more powerful and there is nothing you can do about that. So , stand up straight, raise you chin and be the goddess you are!

Despite her slowly unraveling nerves, Morrigan couldn’t help snort in amusement at the absurdity of Apollyon’s comment though she saw the merit in the deity’s words. She was, after all, the interim Lord Inquisitor and she needed to hold herself to that level of dignity and prowess if she were to play the role, regardless of whether she wanted to or not.

Crossing the small room, Torvil opened the next set of massive doors to reveal a new expansive room. To Morrigan’s surprise, the massive crystalline throne told her it was the throne room as she witnessed the beauty of the most important room of the entire castle, equally surprised to find it so close to the entrance.

Thankfully, only one person seemed to occupy the space, two people actually, as Morrigan eyes set upon Jen leaning back in a lofty sofa next to the throne gently rocking back and forth with a bundle in her arms.

Jen looked up with a tired yet sweet smile, “Well look who finally showed her face,” she said taking in the sight of Morrigan and Mo’Emori as they quietly stalked towards her. She looked to see the giant alien canine that padded his way through the door cautiously, his tongue limply hanging out of his mouth. “I see you gained more interesting company,” she added, surprisingly unfazed by the giant beast before she looked down at her sleeping child in her arms.

Nora quickly trailed behind as she watched Mo’Emori practically vibrate with excitement, snickering to herself as the group converged.

The second Mo’Emori saw the tiny face poking out of the bundled blanket she nearly lost her composure, shaking her hands and arms spastically a muffled squeal filtered through Nora’s hand, covering Mo’Emori’s mouth from behind as she let the woman have her cuteness overload.

Jen snickered as she looked up at her darling nieces before her eyes widened as she focused on Morrigan. But before she could see anything, Yekku slinked his way into the sofa with utmost stealth, his tongue flicking mere inches from the child before he gave a wide-eyed look at Jen before putting every ounce of focus into the baby in her arms.

Torvil sputtered and hissed several exclamations as moved to pull Yekku away from his mate and child only for Xol to hold him back by the arm.

Everyone looked to see Xol shaking his head before, despite still carrying the base of his voice, ever so quietly explaining, “S’randin take care of young, it is okay.”

Torvil and Jen both looked to Morrigan in surprise to see her nod as well, “Its true, they watch over the nests on Tik’Taq’To and guard them with their lives, regardless of subspecies,” she whispered.

Torvil huffed in frustration but relented, not wishing to cause more of a disturbance than necessary and risk waking his daughter.

“Oh my god, it’s so ugly yet soooo adorable!” Nora mused as she took her own peek before looking at Morrigan, “Baby, I think I want one!” she whispered harshly for everyone to hear.

Morrigan rolled her eyes and gave Torvil a deadpan look, “See what you did? Keep it in your pants, mister.”

“Congratulations you two,” Taylor said softly as he and Stephanie approached, his arm wrapped around her as they both watched the baby sleep.

“Breed stock! I'm glad to see you're alive how…” Jen paused for a moment as she scrutinized the couple, “Well this is awkward,” she commented before turning to Morrigan, “Really? You got a lot of explaining to do missy.”

Morrigan furrowed her brow in confusion, “What?”

Jen smirked deviously as if it were obvious before pointing out, “Your new look, your crazy new dog, how you’re dating four people…”

Taylor cut her off nearly forgetting to not shout, “No, no!” he said shaking his head and waving his hands in denial as Morrigan shook her head as well.

“No, those two are together…” Morrigan comment only to be cut off my Nora’s dramatic gag.

“Dude, that’s my sister!” she whispered harshly as she frowned, taking more offense to the comment than anyone expected.

Jen’s eyes widened in a way that looked as if her brain had disconnected for a moment before letting a single chuckle slip, “This is really awkward,” she said before looking away in embarrassment.

Let out of the party, Skoll forcibly interjected himself into the conversation, wedging his way between everyone to stand front and center next to Morrigan as his nose picked up the new scent of Jen and the baby.

Torvil flailed silently in obvious objection, his last nerves being tested by the Danth?r as its nose nearly touched both his child and his mate.

Yekku attempted to push Skoll’s face away as Jen looked at Morrigan with a worried expression only for Morrigan to wave Yekku’s hands away from Skoll’s nose.

“Yekku, be nice. He just wants to see the baby,” Morrigan said softly, still holding the tone of authority Yekku respected without question.

“He’s not going to eat me, is he?” Jen asked only to get her face slapped by his tongue, the look of disgust on her face as she looked away, “Aw, fuck!” she nearly shouted.

Every human giggled and snickered at the interaction as the doors to the far right of the throne opened behind Jen, a Cadre of Eskarii in fine robes bustling out of the doorway slowly chatting one another. However, Morrigan couldn’t help but notice who led them into the room; a tall Eskarii woman dressed in a gown of pure white accented in shimmering silver who wore an extravagant crown telling Morrigan all that she needed to know.

“Holy hell! Talk about a bombshell!” Nora commented only to get painfully pinched by Mo’Emori.

“That’s my Mem-eni!” Mo’Emori whispered, causing Nora to drop her jaw.

“Talk about “Queen me”,” Nora giggled loud enough to draw the attention of the group. However, the group of Eskarii began shouting exclamations of alarm and terror as they saw the giant Danth?r standing by the throne.

There was a sharp and tiny whine as the child squirmed in Jen’s arms, responding to being disturbed as it let out a short cry.

“God damn it, Torvil!” Jen exclaimed lowly as she began bouncing her child in an attempt to comfort the screaming fit that had been bound to start. Torvil was already on the move drawing a pulse handgun from underneath his shirt, something Morrigan hadn’t noticed until then that he had been wearing fine yet nondescript clothing, which was very weird for her since she had only ever seen him wear his Sybrydian armor.

Skoll looked up at the group and back down at the disturbed child before looking back at the panicked group of Eskarii before flashing his fangs. Before Morrigan could stop him, Skoll leapt right over Jen and the child to land next to Torvil in perfect grace. Thankfully the floor was stone inlaid with veins of crystal which absorbed the entire sound of his landing before he let out a low but savage growl of fury.

Morrigan sprinted around the sofa before sliding up to Skoll’s mouth and wrapping her arms around his muzzle before he could bark at those who disturbed the tiny baby.

The sound of an audible smack echoed around the room as Morrigan smacked the side of his mouth, berating him quietly for being too loud.

Skoll however, let out a short whine looking back in the direction of the sofa before a louder and sharper cry, causing him to bear his fangs angrily as he looked back towards the group, a single burst of electricity arching across his body.

It dawned on Morrigan as to why Skoll was being so ornery, her heart swelling in adoration as she forced herself to gently push his face away from the group. “I get it buddy but let me handle this. Why don’t you go lay down by the baby?”

Skoll glanced at her before clicking his teeth together towards the group causing them to jump; Morrigan snorted in amusement as Skoll slowly turned around and padded his way back to the sofa to peer over Jen’s shoulder.

Morrigan turned back to see the queen observing with wrapped interest before she turned to Torvil, “My son, why is such a creature in our home?” she inquired in a even, royal demeanor.

Torvil shifted his eyes to Morrigan as she responded instead, “That’s Skoll… he’s mine…” she stated nervously, awkwardly waving at the queen in embarrassment.

“Well, the baby’s awake!” Jen called out from behind Morrigan causing Torvil to groan and tighten his grip on his pistol, aiming it directly at the group of Eskarii that had caused a scene. At the same time, the queen merely glanced at the group that hid behind her and stated, “Ti maer dail,” her words holding a level of authority that had been unknown to Morrigan.

Without needing further prompt, the grow shuffled towards the exit in a panic, yelping and gasping as Skoll bared his fangs at them for good measure as soon as they came closer.

The queen turned back to Morrigan with an amused smirk on her face as she scrutinized every detail, looking over every inch of her as she shifted awkwardly.

Take notes, this is a woman who knows power, Apollyon interjected in her mind breaking Morrigan’s bashful demeanor as she realized she was the one summoned there.

The moment the front archway closed, the queen said, “You must forgive my rudeness, but my precious grandchild is awake,” her time carrying a level of excitement unbefitting of a queen before she daintily rushed towards the sofa to see her awakened granddaughter.

“By all means, keeps the focus off me,” Morrigan chuckled to herself in relief as she looked back to see the queen cooing as she stood next to Skoll, apparently unfazed by the creature of legend as everyone broke out into low conversation.

“It is good to see you,” Torvil said as he and watched the mood of the room shift, “But this, is a bit much.”

Morrigan laughed at the truth behind the comment, “Well, you know me. When in doubt, go loud and proud…” she said before chuckling at the absurdity of her statement.

Torvil hummed to himself, “Quite,” he stated as he watched Jen pass of their child before turning to glare at the both of them, the look Morrigan recognized as an adult about to scold a child.

With a snort, Torvil patted her on the head, “You’re on your own though when it comes to her,” he said in amusement before stepping away.

“Oh gee, thanks. Love you too, ya dick!” Morrigan called out after him as she watched Jen stalk closer.

“Okay, LC, Spill it. What the hell happened?” Jen demanded crossing her arms.

Morrigan rolled her tongue over one side of her molars as she considered the question, “You’re going to have to be more specific, Jen. A lot has happened.”

“Let’s start with the eyes, and what the fuck is up with you and Taylor? And this?” Jen asked grabbing one of Morrigan’s hands to point out the markings that had spread to the backs of her hands. “Your ma is going to lose her shit,” she stated not knowing that Morrigan's entire body was marked.

The questions, despite the gravity of their reasoning, made Morrigan grin instead of feel embarrassed or ashamed, revealing the longer, sharper set of teeth that caused an instant look of shock on her aunt’s face. “That is a long story, where is mom by the way?”

“What in the…” Jen started before the queen, carrying the baby in her arms as she was incessantly followed by Yekku and Skoll, interrupted as she approached, “Your mother is going over the notes of our meeting with the other political Houses. She is a woman of diligence however; she should not be gone for long, she is quite eager to see you just as I to see this little bundle of joy,” she said regally before looking down at the wrapped-up child that cooed and giggled up at her.

“Yes, you're a little joyful bean, aren’t you? I don't know why humans call you a bean but it seems so fitting, a precious little Emery bean,” the queen cooed at the child, making Morrigan purse her lips to hide the smile that wanted to plaster across her face as she watched the queen act no different than an ordinary person, even by human standards. It made Morrigan feel significantly better about being on Escostia as a wave of relief coursed through her as she watched the woman coddle her granddaughter before Morrigan registered the child’s name.

Realizing she shared a name with her new niece, Morrigan’s eyes shifted to Jen who did nothing but grin her iconic shit eating grin when she knew she had been caught.

Morrigan huffed indignantly as she glared at Jen before stepping towards the queen to finally take a look at her niece Emery, looking down to see a tiny pointed ears, deep purple eyes and a smile that melted her heart.
