EMERGENCE FROM A COMATOSE STATE

Soft light seeped through the thin membrane, surrounding him as he awoke. The heat from the light, even this far away, felt nice on his skin, as well as the room temperature incubation fluids surrounding him. A soft nudge came from his back as the wall began to push him through a narrow passageway. Still in that period of half sleep, he was barely conscious of his shunting through the narrow hole, but was quickly jolted awake when the membrane snagged on a piece of concrete. Parts of the membrane peeled open, with the pinkish orange fluids pouring unto the hole in which he was quickly at the end of.

As the membrane began to be peeled away, with an irritating sensation enveloped him, like that of a bandaid being slowly peeled off smooth hairless skin. As he reached the end of the shoot the soft blue light grew more pronounced, but as his eyes were new to him, the light blinded leaving a slight burning sensation, which he instinctively shut close. With a loud schlooping noise the membrane clang to the tight exit of the hole peeling it off of his body leaving a bundled up wax like layer over what was the *birth canal*. A thin rubber like-tube emerging from the now bunched up layers yanked out of his stomach leaving a innie belly button in its wake. The byproducts of his birth were quickly sucked back into what was his birthing canal as the tighter and tighter exit closed shut, leaving him face first unto the floor still with his eyes firmly shut.

His body was sore, his first real thought was of itchiness, as his body still wet from his birth was now covered front first in a thin layer of dust which had enveloped the small cave which he was dumped into. His eyes fluttered open as he tried to lift himself up, with his legs sending only back tingling sensations as his muscles power up for the first time. Deciding to reject the idea, he rolled over unto another fine layer of dust, adjusting himself to the new lights, smells, and sensations overpowering his senses; he sat there for a good while soaking it all in. After a good minute, he lifts himself up and with a good deal of effort lifts himself up with one still asleep knee. The air was crisp and flew over him, highlighting the itchy dust all over him, as he attempted in vain to wipe away the birthing fluids, dust and bits of gravel stuck to him, he began to take in his surroundings.

He appeared to be in a crevice, or a small cave, surrounded on all sides by geometric concrete, jagged and square wherever it could be. In Front of him was this cave’s entrance which showed some kind of long drop across from the cave’s mouth, vast stretches of space stopped only by another concrete wall. Behind him was a long wall which eventually curved up into a rectangle of fluorescent light which gave a soft calming buzz which pinged all around his mind as he collected his berings. He was stark white, and squishy, his legs first shuffled but eventually lifted at his command, walking over to the cave’s mouth. He saw that the drop went down far, so far that he could not see without coming close to the edge, with the terrace walkway leading far up, or far far down. He stared down, an abyss that fell, far far until he couldn't see anything.

He began to stare into the sky, much closer than the pit below it showed a baby blue expanse sprinkled with soft white fluffy clouds floating to and fro. The word popped into his mind when he thought about what these white lumps were, cl-ou-ds. The word was alien but familiar, a sense of Déjà vu… there it was again, Déjà vu what were these phrases? The wind howled around him creating a stinging cry which sounded like warbled wailing. His noodly legs dragged him through the blanket of light grey dust down the wide flat steps, step after step he pulled himself down the side of the vast ravine. As he reached the bottom of the steps as indicated by the wind funneling into a narrow point which echoed both in the tunnel and around it.

The wind made his skin cold, he did not like the sensation it made his skin form bumps that heightened the itch which he tried to scratch to no avail, the ends of his arms bunched up into uneven fingers which possessed nothing to scratch himself with except narrow crevices on his finger’s surface. The more he existed, the more he saw and learned. It filled his brain and it excited him, his cheeks turned rosy red from the fun learned presented, excitedly pressing forward down the steps onto a small shelf which moved into a tightening passageway. He opened his mouth and tried to evacuate the ideas which bounced around in his mind, but it flooded out as a soft hoarse.

  “Eugha!”

He moved his legs back and fell face first into the floor. He felt something new then, pain, it flowed from his face and filled every part of his body, shooting out another sound

  “Mueuah!”

He used his arms to try and lift himself back up, but he was clumsy and heavy. He leaned to the right and landed next to the hole, using its opening as a support to lift himself up, now standing with his nerves giving residual notice of pain he stood dazed and sore trying to reconcile himself. Traipsing his fingers over its exterior he remembered something, fa-ace then he began to move his fingers over his own face trying to formulate a connection between the two concepts to satisfy a hypothesis forming in his mind. He had two eyes, a button nose and chubby cheeks with thin lips. He fished around in his mouth and found two pairs of rigid teeth and a small lump which squirmed in between his fingers he knew as a *tongue*.

As he slinked deeper into his own maw, he reached a threshold and his body convulsed gagging, his throat trying to eject out nothing from his stomach, when the spasm stopped he felt sick then a roar in his chest and debilitating emptiness filled a small pouch in his abdomen. He fell on his knees clutching his chest, softly landing on the blanket of dust covering everything. His body reacted without his command, his mouth moved on its own, gulping up as much dust as he could from the floor, shoveling it into his mouth. It was an odd texture thin and ephemeral but also thick and chewy at the same time. After the frenzy was through he sat up for a bit catching his breath reeling from the terrible things he discovered.

He stood up quickly this time standing next to the hole staring into it, small enough for him to crawl through, so he did. The tunnel was dark, the kind of darkness he experienced less than an hour ago right before his birth, as he crawled he heard the wind get louder and move in a multitude of directions expanding and contorting all around him. As he moved through the darkness with the sphere, he moved forward and then pressed into emptiness falling, sliding down one tunnel across another, pinging across tunnel to tunnel all the while in pitch black darkness. Only the rush of the wind guided their direction *grounding* them in the knowledge that they had at least somewhere to go. The walls melted and covered his body, this frightened him terrifying him as the concept of death flashed in his mind, heat, uncomfortable heat enveloped his back and chest sticking to the dust and incubation fluids still slathered over his body.

The puddy slid off of him as they reached their exit, signaled by the wind reaching an audible zenith ahead of them at a different angle. He was flipped to his feet and landed in front of a covered opening which slid open to reveal a wide steppe of larger layered shelves which stretched on for miles, far past what he could see. Somehow in the kerfuffle a medical gown was placed over him, neatly tied in the back. He stepped out taking in the sweet warm air that now filled his lungs, starkly different from the harsh cold wind that enveloped him earlier. Above was a wide enclosed sky, panels far in the distance showed baby blue sky scenes filled by thinner and faster clouds moving south. When he moved out of the opening the exit slammed shut with a loud *Thunk!*.
