Chapter 2-A night of celebration

As Alni came out of the hospital she made her way back to her house. On the way back however she saw a shop selling fried Zenaoi eggs and since she was feeling hungry and also wanted to celebrate her first day as a teacher she decided to indulge herself a little.

So she bought 5 eggs and also a basket to help carry them which the shop also sold. This cost her 8 maruni , 1 maruni per egg and 3 maruni for the basket.

Maruni was the lowest form of currency in Hunora. It took the form of a small silver coin. It had denominations of 1,3,5,10,20,50 and 100. The coin’s themselves showed their value on one side while the other side had the tree with a crown on top of it which. But maruni wasn’t the only currency used in Hunora. 50 maruni equaled 1 huklo which had denominations of 1,5,10,20,50 and 100.

Alni finally returned home where she once again decided to read a few of Hette’s books cause she loved him.

Rilpun Hette lived around 200 years ago and in his early years he was a hunter but after losing his left leg in a dangerous hunt he retired and tried to pursue other things. He started gaining interest in biology and wrote several books where he detailed the characteristics of different animals and how a hunter could identify and hunt them effectively.

He also proposed several new theories about biology such as his theory of evolution which suggested that a species of animals would change from generation from generation in order to adapt to their environment. However at the time his theories seemed ridiculous since he had no way to prove them. He tried to convince people to fund his research but all of them turned him down. The now frustrated Hette then founded the group known as “The union of scholars” which was an independent group of research who promised to provide as much funding as possible to researchers to who couldn’t any because their ideas were seen as too ridiculous by researchers.

Hette got all his money by selling his books which were, and still are, popular among hunters due to the immense amount of detailed information about hunting that was written in them. Soon he got more and more money so the union of scholars expanded and funded many researchers and became well-known. The official researchers didn’t like this so they requested that the union be banished and the decision was made that the union and all it’s members was not to be allowed into any cities in Hunora.

The union then moved far away into the forest where they established a village called Hetteri , named after the union’s founder. Hetteri gradually grew and after 150 years it once again made contact with the cities of Hunora. When people from Hunora first meet them they assumed they were an uncontacted tribe of elves which they never meet before. After the truth about Hetteri’s creation was revealed Hunora apologized to the members of the union profusely and the Union split into 2 groups.

One of them forgave Hunora and decided to work with them while the other group didn’t forgive them and moved out of the country. They built massive boats which they used to sail to a small island where they remain to this day. Contact with them has been attempted but they remain isolationist.

This story was often taught to young kids to teach them not to judge another person just because their opinion differs from yours and to accept the ideas of others.

Alni entered her kitchen and cracked the five eggs and let their yolk fall into a metal pan which she held over a small fire in the stone fireplace. After around 10 minutes the food was ready and Alni gorged that night. Once she was full she locked the door of her house and decided to go to sleep. She took out some black-colored pajamas from her closet and went to bed.

  …

She woke up in the morning, neatly folded her pajamas and got dressed.

Most of the clothing in Hunora consisted of robes which people wore casually. However hunters wore leather hunting attire. This is because when the they first became hunters they wore tighter clothes cause loose clothes such as robes would get caught in bushes and branches. So tight leather clothing became associated with hunters so when other professions such as teachers and researchers became a thing there needed to be a way to distinguish between a hunter and a non-hunter at a glance so the non-hunters wore robes while the hunters kept their type of clothing.

Alni once again made way to the school. She was on time and so were the students so Alni began her lesson.

  “First of all…” she said

“What do you guys know about the Rulahn”

Immediately many students started clapping their hands, wanting to answer the question, which kind of overwhelmed Alni.

“You there. Pony tail.” She said as she pointed at a female student.

“The Rulahn is a social position that a hunter can achieve if they manage to hunt a dragon by themselves.” The student answered.

“Correct. Now you, the boy with the freckles, do you know what the word “Rulahn” means in Hunoran?” Alni asked another student.

“The word Rulahn comes from the word Ru (Ruler) and Lahn (Hunter) so the word translates to “Ruler of hunters” in Hunoran” the student answered.

“Correct.” said Alni. “I won’t ask anymore question since you all should know almost everything there is to know about the Rulahn” said Alni.

“As you know the Rulahn has the highest authority in Hunora and most of the time there is only one Rulahn in charge at a time but because everybody has the chance to complete the requirements to become a Rulahn this means there can be multiple Rulahn’s at a time but this is extremely rare. The biggest number of Rulahn’s that were in power at a time was 4 so don’t think just anybody can become a Rulahn.” she explained.

“Now the greatest goal of every hunter is to become a Rulahn which means they must hunt a dragon so I’ll spend this class explaining what a dragon is exactly.” She said before taking out a few notes from her desk.

“The term “dragon” is used to refer to any member of the draconic family. The draconic family itself includes true dragons, wyverns, drakes, serpents and leviathans. Each of these groups contains many different species withing them. I’ll now explain each of them and give a species as an example”

“A true dragon is a reptile with 4 legs, 2 wings and a tail. Usually large predators. They often have some sort of way of attacking from a distance. For example the Akreven Dragon, the most widespread true dragon species, can produce a substance within a specialized gland and then spit it out through it’s mouth. This substance, once in contact with air, will ignite and become deadly ball of fire”

The students listened closely. Taking in all this information so that they can know as much as there is to know about the dragons.

“The wyverns have 2 legs and 2 wings. Usually on the smaller side. Most of the species form packs in order to hunt their prey. The Wisp Wyverns for example hunt in packs consisting of an average of a dozen individuals and they hunt by surrounding their prey before biting down on it’s limbs and ripping it apart”

“The drakes have 4 legs and no wings. They are the group of dragons with the largest amount of pack hunting species so if you see one there are most likely more. The Ammit for example are extremely persistent pack hunters. Due to their incredible sense of smell they can track their prey and members of their pack for large distances but the exact range is still unknown”

“The serpents, the name suggests have a serpentine body, but sometimes they might have front limbs such as arms and sometimes even wings. Most species rely on venom to kill their prey such as the Blood Devil which has developed a venom which, once in the body of the victim, will cause accelerated production of blood. This will drain your body's nutrients extremely quickly and cause you to feel dizzy or nauseous and the increased amount of blood will lead to your veins being clogged which will prevent your heart from beating properly which will cause death”

“The leviathans are the most elusive category. Most of them live in the deep oceans and their life-cycles are a mystery. The Naga is the most well-known leviathan. It’s body shapes resembles a serpent with fins at the front of it’s body. It mostly attacks isolated sailors.” Alni let out a breath of exhaustion.

“Who knew just talking could be so tiring.” She lampooned inwardly.

“Did you understand all that? Managing to hunt a single member of any of these groups will lead to you getting the Rulahn title although it’s kind of become tradition that a hunter should hunt an Akreven Dragon in order to become the Rulahn.” she explained.

The students all nodded in understanding.

Alni felt proud of herself. Finally the Zenaoi bird announced the end of that day’s lesson and Alni was finally able to go home.

“Another day done. Good job me” She praised herself in her mind.
