Chapter 5-Cooking and contemplation

That night Alni tried sleeping but for some reason she could fall asleep.

“Why in the name of the Twin Stars can’t I sleep? O great Amarul, star of the mind, bestow upon my mind some sleep.” She prayed to one of the Twin Stars in her mind but for some reason it didn’t seem to work.

“Well I’m going to assume you’re busy since a lot of people are falling asleep right now but can’t you pay a bit more attention to me?” She secretly disrespected the Amarul in her mind.

“I’ll wake up late due to lack of sleep so I’ll skip breakfast and instead go buy food after getting dressed. I’ll have lunch and then go to the cathedral. After that I’ll check out the library to see if there are any interesting books I could buy and then I’ll visit my mother at the hospital.” Since she couldn’t fall asleep she decided to make plans for tomorrow.

She finally fell asleep after staying awake for a bit longer.

  …

She woke up naturally and followed the plan she made last night. She left to buy food and ended up spending 6 maruni on a piece of unicorn meat. When she came home she put a metal pan with the meat in it above the fireplace but not before putting some oil inside.

The meat was laid on top of the oil and on the parts where the two meet a countless number of small bubbles appeared before bursting and being replaced by new bubbles. This cycle continued as the meat slowly took on a darker shade.

Once the meat was sufficiently cooked Alni grabbed the frying pan and carried it away from the furnace. She then took a small bucket of water that was near the furnace and splashed a bit of it in order to put the fire out.

Since most of the houses in Hunoran cities were made of wood it was dangerous to have a burning fire in the house. For this reason the fireplace itself was built out of stone but for emergencies almost every house had a bucket of water which could be used to put the fire out and in case the water spilled on the floor the elves wore sandals in order to not get their feet wet.

However Alni didn’t splash the water because there was an emergency but because she was running low on firewood and didn’t want to waste it.

She sat down on the table with and decided to gorge on the unicorn meat. She ripped off a small chunk of it with a bit of difficulty before putting it in her mouth.

The outermost layer of it was the toughest to bite through but once bitten through it allowed Alni to feast upon it’s inner layers. The inner layers were softer and had a tantalizing taste. The toughness of the outer layer and the softness of the inner layer made each bite satisfying as the teeth broke through the outside and experienced the wonderful flavor of the insides.

After chewing and swallowing the chunk she tore off another one but this time it was bigger. She once again entered the short but sweet cycle of satisfaction and her taste buds felt like they were jumping in joy. She then finished the big chunk and tore off more and more until there was nothing left of the unicorn meat.

“No I want more. Give me more. I need to eat.” She cried out in agony over the loss of her meal.

After admitting defeat she wiped her mouth and hands with a napkin before heading to the cathedral which was a 200 meter rise. She headed up a ladder and made her way to the cathedral.

The cathedral she was going to was called the Saint Sellow Cathedral and it had a white coloration on the outside with two small bell towers rising up from each side of the cathedral.

Once Alni entered there was a dozen chairs surrounding which surrounded the alter in the shape of a circle. The left and right corridors each had a hallway which lead to the two bell towers.

On the wall opposite to the entrance was a giant mural.

At the bottom of the mural monsters with countless limbs, eyes were depicted.

They were located deep within the ground and above them the mural depicted a vast barrier of dirt and stone which separated them from the surface.

On the surface was a vast grassland with countless trees extending upwards. At the foot of these trees was a pack of unicorns being chased by a werewolf.

On the trees numerous houses were built which had elves sleeping within them. Above the trees stretched a seemingly endless night sky with stars illuminating the earth below.

A circle of large stars surrounded the white moon and above this, at the highest point of the mural, were two massive white stars right next to each other.

Alni gazed at mural, her eyes filled with awe. Even though she saw it countless times before she always marveled at it’s beauty. This mural was the most defining feature of the Saint Sellow Cathedral and it is what the cathedral is best best known for.

Alni walked forward and found a seat in the circle that surrounded the alter. A man with white flowing robes tinged with accents of deep blue color walked out from one of the hallways carrying a book in his arms.

He stood in front of the alter and put the book in front of it before flipping to a page. Several people gathered in the cathedral and found their seat. Once all the seats were occupied the rest of the people had to stand. The man looked at the book in front of him.

He then opened his mouth and said in a deep and powerful voice.

“The Twin Stars bestow upon us blessings for each day that we praise them.”

“Amarul, the star of the mind, gives us nights filled with rest and protects us from nightmares.”

"Amalahno, the star of the hunt, bestows the hunters with vigor and courage and gives them the strength to protect our cities.”

“But we must not forget the star of creation whose name has been lost to time. She was the one who slayed the Primordials, who ruled over a chaotic world since before the dawn of time, and she sealed the most powerful Primordials within the earth.”

“She used the blood of the Primordials to give birth to the animals and plants that fill the world as well as the rules that bind the world and keep it from turning to chaos.”

“She then tried to create the elves, humans, dwarfs and all the other societies the fill the world today. But the blood of the Primordials was not enough to create such beings so the star of creation used her own blood to create all societies that fill the world today.”

“However she used too much of her blood and died but in her last moments she created Amarul and Amalahno who would serve as guides for the societies that fill the world but also as guardians who protected them from the Primordials who after ages are still attempting to escape their prison.”

The man continued preaching as the people listened.

Alni was focused. Her family was pious and so she knew all the stories that the holy text of her religion contained.

She herself didn’t believe in any of this but due to her family it became a part of her routine to come and listen to these preacher with her mother and father.

When her mother became sick and her father died she still continued coming here in honor of her father and to hopefully get the Twin Stars to help her mother.

“I really am a hypocrite. I don’t believe and yet I still pray to the Twin Stars.” She criticized herself inwardly.

After a few moments of contemplation her eyes seemed to become deep and enigmatic as if she was having a complex philosophical discussion inside her mind.

“Maybe everyone is a bit of a hypocrite.” She though inwardly. Contemplating the possibility.
