A New Start

I laid low for a few years. Allowing the world to celebrate my supposed death. Every city I went to and visited was celebrating the death of the demon king, and I cheered with them and then disappeared into the night. Those few years of celebrating were a nice change of pace, even for me.

After the few years I gave myself, I travelled to the city of Okarche in the central part of the kingdom. It had a skyline that was slightly smaller than most skylines south of it or on the coast lines but it was building a new power for its principality in the kingdom. I came here because I got to watch as it grew from nothing to actually being a city with some pull.

As I entered, I was immediately greeted with a smile on everyone's faces. I was in complete awe about the principality of Oklahoma. I was so taken back that I accidentally hit a woman who dropped what she was carrying and my instincts caught her things in my magical field.

  “Whoops. Sorry.”

“No, it should be me apologizing for running into you.” I lowered her things back into her hands. I got to see her flowing blond hair and her hazel eyes behind her glasses. She was wearing a suit of some kind. Which was completely different from my battle style jacket I was wearing.

  “Thank you.”

“Say, I was wondering if you could help me with something. I’m new here.”

  “Oh, sure. Whatcha need?”

“I’m wanting to register as an adventurer, but I don’t know where to go.”

“Oh. You just need to register yourself at the capital.” She looks at her watch. “Oop. I got to go.”

“Sorry for holding you up. Hope you have a good day.”

“You too.” She hurried away to wherever she was going. I turned back and started to walk the other direction from her. I waited until I was out of her sight before I closed my eyes. I felt the air change as I teleported to the front of the capitol building. I looked to my side to see a statue of a woman in front of the building. I turn back to see the marble style building with a stature of a man holding a magical staff on top.

People were coming in and out with nice suits and clothing. I completely stood out in my choice of clothes. I couldn’t hear the conversations around me, but the few talking about my outfit barely made me flinch as I walked up the stairs into the capital.

When I entered, I saw a lot of people walking around and conversing amongst themselves. I walked up to a free window and the clerk looked up to me.

“Hello sir. How may I help you?”

“Hi. Yeah, ummm, I just arrived here and wanted to register as an adventurer.”

“Are you a citizen of the kingdom?” Yes?

“Yes. But I never registered for anything until now.”

“Okay. That’s fine. What is your name?” Oh. Fuck. I didn’t think I would get this far.

  “Umm. Keagan Moore.”

“Okay. Date of birth?” Oh god. What is a reasonable age?

“26.” He looks at me. “Oh, whoops. 6/6/1800.” He looks back at the computer.

“Aaand, your class and magic type.” What describes me the best?

“Fighter and…” I took a moment to think about what best classifies my magic. “...Celestial.” He input my answers into the computer. “Okay. Have a seat and we’ll call you when your identification card has been processed.”

“Thank you.” I left and sat down on a free chair. I looked up to see a sign hanging up.

  “To all Adventurers,

To standardize the ranking system, the king passed the ‘Federal Ranking’s act of 1826’. This act provides the guidelines of how adventurers will be ranked. The ranking are to be as below

  Bronze  Emerald

  Silver Diamond

  Iron Crimson

  Gold Iridescent

The sign had pictures of the gems next to each of the rankings that reflected that ranking but I wasn’t going to climb to the top. I just wanted to be a normal person again. I saw the clerk gesture me back over to him. I get up and listen to him explain to me the ID card.

“Sorry it took a minute, we don’t get many people with celestial magic.” He pushes the id card over to me. “This is your ID card. Your name, date of birth, and the card design reflects your magic type. Your card will update with your ranking.” He slides a chain with a bronze colored gem on it. “This is your ranking gem, as you progress up the gem will change.” I grab the card and the chain. “Any question.”

  “Nope, not at all.”

“Welcome home.” I turned and left the capitol building and looked at my new card. I am an adventurer. With the bit of cash I had from laying low, I set off for the nearest bar. Since I was going to look for work in the morning, I wanted to catch a good night's rest and get a cold drink.

I checked into a nearby hotel and walked to the bar down the street. The person waiting at the bar checked my id. He looked at it with a stern confused look.

  “Is this real?”

“Yeah? I just got it today.”

“I have never seen anyone with this design on it. What magic do you use?”

  “Celestial.”

“I have to verify it.” He walks inside and grabs someone else to look at my ID. Great, I’m over 300 years old and I’m getting ID’d. “Is this real?” The second person looks at it with a troubled look.

“I have never seen this design before.” He looks up to me. “What kind of magic do you use?”

“Celestial.” He looks at it again and hands it back to me. When I grab it, the background of the ID card begins to move.

“It’s real.” The bouncer moves out of the way.

“Sorry about that.” I walk in and walk up to the bar. I saw the golden blond hair of the girl again serving drinks. She turned around and her hazel eyes looked over at me.

“Oh, hey. It’s you.” She walks over to me. “I guess you were able to get your ID?” I sat down at the bar and took off my jacket.

“Yeah. Sorry for running into you. I didn’t know you needed to be nice looking to work at a bar.”

“Oh. Heavens no. I was on my way home from my day job at the guild.” Her question stumped me.

“Why do you work here if you work at a guild?” She gave me a bit of a smile.

“Because this is the underside of adventuring. Heroes come in here after a hard day's work and I like to give them something to remember. They spill the beans about some rumors. And when they report to the guild the next day, their ‘secret ideas’ are shared amongst the class. It’s neat.”

“Does the guild know you do this?”

“Yes and no. They know someone is doing it, but they think it’s other adventurers.” Another customer pulls her attention from me.

  “Daisy! I need another one.”

“On the way.” She turns back to me. “I’ll be right back.” She walks off and starts to attend to the other customer. I sat at the bar and started looking around the bar to see how the people were treated and realized how cheery people were around the place. It put a smile on my face to see so much happiness around me.

“Okay. What would you like to drink?”

“MacTavish. On Ice.” She walks down and grabs the whisky. She grabs some ice and puts the drink in the class. She grabs the napkin and writes something on it and comes back to me.

“Here you go. Enjoy.” She walks off to other customers along the bar. I grab the glass and look at the note. “My name is Lucidia. Daisy is my cover name.” I flipped the napkin over and started to sip my drink. I heard commotion at the entrance, causing me to peak out at the entrance of the bar.

“I understand that you are emerald ranks, but you have already been banned, Syriel.”

“Out of my way.” Four guys bust through the bouncer's body and barge into the bar. I turn back to face towards the bar with my back pointed towards the lobby. I noticed that it quickly died down and the tone shifted to that of slight dread. I wrote “Are they a problem?” on the napkin and tapped the bar. It prompted Lucidia to look at it and she read it. She nodded slightly in response to my note and I tipped my drink to her.

“Oh. DIASY! He walks over to my seat on the bar. “Move. You are in my seat.” I finished my drink and set the cup down.

“It’s okay. I’m done anyway.” I turn to stand up.

“Don’t you want another drink?” This was her asking me to stay. I turned to her.

“I think I’ve drank enough.” I walked over to the register and she quickly moved away and came over to cash me out. The emerald dudes were behind me. I knew this but didn’t pay much attention.

“You just gonna leave the wonderful lady alone?”

“You must be a chump to walk away in the face of true power.” True power? HA! Don’t make me laugh.

“I don’t want to over indulge myself. I got things to do in the morning.” I turned to see them all around me. I paid no mind to it and tried to walk past them but they blocked me.

“I got something for you to do right now?”

“Like what?” The leader, Syriel, stood in the middle and grew a flame. The entire bar turned to see this emerald ranked adventurer summon his magic on a bronze rank.

“You had a nice expensive drink, and we wanted to try it. So how about you pay for us to have some?” I gave him a considering look

“Mmmmm. Hmmmm. Nah. I think I’ll save my money.” My answer angered him and his magic increased.

  “It wasn’t a question.”

“Also, didn’t I hear you were banned from this bar? Which means they refuse service to you. So, that’s a double no.”

“You better listen to me. I am an emerald so my magic is a lot stronger than yours.”

“I’d like to see you try.”

“YOU ASKED FOR IT!” He proceeded to throw his fireball covered hand at me. I dodged out of the way and slammed his face into the floor. I dusted off my jacket and turned back to Lucidia. I gave her 500 etherium.

“200 for the floor, and the other is a tip. See you later.” I walked over the stuck Syriel and walked out of the bar. As I walked out, the bouncer walked in to try to get him out of the floor. I hope I didn’t kill him.
