Chapter 24: Catching a Chill

The hot air enveloped the entire bathroom, and at first glance, I didn't see anyone.

He Mingzhen quickly walked over and saw Wen Qi in the bathtub, her eyes tightly closed, probably too tired to sleep. He gently scooped her out of the cooled water and wrapped a towel around her body.

It seemed like she had a nightmare, sleeping beside her, with fine and dense cold sweat on her forehead. He Mingzhen reached out to check and found that she had a low fever, so he got a towel to apply it many times, but it didn't work. She seemed to dislike this feeling very much, raising her hand to pull down the towel.

"Don't move." He Mingzhen held her hand and slowly moved it down, putting it under the quilt, and stroked her forehead.

Wen Qi's consciousness was half blurry and half awake, barely opening her eyes, her voice heavy with nasal tone, "Not feeling well."

"It'll be alright soon." He Mingzhen held her hand tightly again, and a gentle kiss fell on her eyelashes. "Sleep."

Wen Qi shook her head, her eyes a bit blurry from the smoke. "It's dawn already and I still have to go back, I can't sleep in, Li Xin's torn clothes, throw them away for me, just looking at them makes me feel nauseous..."

"Alright, I've helped you get rid of it, now go to sleep." He Mingzhen's hand trembled with rage as he thought about how he would cut Li Xing into a thousand pieces to vent his anger.

Wen Qi suddenly opened his eyes, pulled the quilt tightly over his body and said, "Why is it still so cold in summer? I'll go turn off the air conditioner."

He Mingzhen glanced at the air conditioner, which was clearly not turned on. He knew this was due to her being startled and her mind being muddled, so he could only coax her into lying down, stretching out his arm to carefully wrap it around her slender body.

The more she resisted, the more painful He Mingzhen's heart was torn apart. He could no longer ignore Wen Qi's existence as he had five years ago, and his subconscious heartache wouldn't deceive him.

When did it start, He Mingzhen couldn't remember, perhaps it was the warmth of that night, or perhaps it was the constant disturbance before that, or perhaps it was even earlier, Wen Qi's shadow had been lingering in his world and couldn't be shaken off.

Wen Qi slept for a long time and didn't wake up until it was almost evening.

Her fever has gone down, but she still has a stuffy nose and a sore throat, feeling somewhat uncomfortable. She got up to rummage through her boxes and found some cold medicine, which she took with the leftover water from last night.

The bathroom had been cleaned up by someone, the water stains on the floor were wiped clean, and she remembered that her clothes had also been thrown away at some point.

Wen Qi hastily put on her slippers and went downstairs. Hearing the noise in the kitchen, she knew without thinking that it was He Mingzhen.

  Still have some conscience.

But one code is one code, yesterday's matter at the hospital still can't be passed. Wen Qi thought so, suddenly interrupted by a voice behind him.

  "Are you awake?"

He Jie might have been chopping vegetables and heard some noise outside, so she put down the knife and walked out without even putting it down.

Wen Qi saw He Jie and was a bit surprised, "How did you get here?"

"Hey, little rabbit, am I abnormal? Who else cares about you besides me?" He Jie rolled her eyes and turned into the kitchen.

"I'm saying, you don't have to go to work today? Come and keep me company, I'm so touched." Wen Qi followed up, trotting into the kitchen.

He Jie was supposed to have a shift today, but she couldn't resist He Mingzhen's temptation of money and abandoned her work to take care of Wen Qi. This foolish person even willingly became an unnamed hero, letting all the good things fall on He Jie's head.

  A fool doesn't pass up a bargain.

He Jie was short of money and settled this matter quickly.

"Of course, I've heard that you, this kind-hearted person, went to do a good deed and were instead taken advantage of by the evil villagers. I had to come take a look."

He Jie cut the washed vegetables into long and short strips. She wasn't good at cooking either, Wen Qi knew that best.

Wen Qi walked out to collect bowls and chopsticks. Suddenly, a ghostly cry came from the kitchen: "Wen Qi! Quick! Save me!"
