Chapter 13: Rock and Wuxia (Part 1)

Shengshi Garden is just four stops away from the nearest cinema.

On Saturday morning, Li Qian still got up early, exercised, took a bath, changed clothes, and had breakfast. By the time he finished packing his bag and left the door, it was almost eight o'clock, just five minutes short of eight.

Wang Jinglu also had a small bag on her back and was waiting at the entrance of the community.

A sleeveless apricot-colored short shirt on top, and a linen pomegranate-red long skirt below the knee - if an ordinary girl were to dress like this, Li Qian would be able to mock her to death. But honestly speaking, Wang Jingluo's slender and tall figure, wearing such an outfit, unexpectedly didn't look tacky at all, and even had a hint of artistic flair.

Perhaps because Li Qian paid a bit extra attention to his clothes, Wang Jinglu felt a little guilty and asked when he walked over: "Is it not good-looking for me to dress like this?"

Li Qian glanced at her and said, "Who bought you this dress? It doesn't seem like your style."

  "My sister." She replied honestly.

"Really!" Li Qian curled his lips.

Wang Jingxue is a top-notch person, from small to large, the impression she left on Li Qian can be summed up in four words: handsome, beautiful, cold, ruthless. Until now, these four words are still Li Qian's point of view.

It's no wonder that her aesthetic view is quite different from ordinary people.

"It's just you two sisters who dare to dress like this!" Li Qian said.

"Is it really ugly?" she asked timidly.

"It's better to look ugly, it will save me a lot of trouble!"

Wang Jinglu slightly pouted her mouth.

She spent two hours in her small closet last night, and finally chose this outfit. This skirt was even worn for the first time, she thought it looked good when she looked in the mirror, but others didn't like it.

Li Qian walked a few steps away and found that no one was following him. He turned his head back and couldn't help but smile.

"I was complimenting you and you didn't even realize it?" he said.

"Ah?" Wang Jinglu raised her head, slightly dazed, "Were you just praising me?"

Li Qian helplessly said, "How do you feel like your IQ has been dropping lately! Alright... What I mean is, with this outfit, if an ordinary girl wore it, she would look ugly, but when you wear it, you look beautiful... Did you understand this time?"

Wang Jinglu smiled slightly, a little shy and a little delighted.

  "Then let's go!" she said.

  …………

Since it's not far away, they decided to walk there directly.

As soon as they left the residential area, Li Qian took out his earphones from a small bag and put them on. After thinking for a moment, he removed the left one and asked: "Do you want to listen?"

Wang Jinglu took it and put it in her ear, but was startled as soon as she did.

  A heavy metal band.

"Are you listening to rock?" she asked.

"Flight Band." He smiled and said, "Just this heavy metal. Their songs don't have a strong metallic taste."

Then, Wang Jinglu hesitated for a moment and put it back in his ear.

It was just one song, and as soon as it finished, the traffic light turned red. Li Qian took out his portable CD player from his bag, removed the disc, and then handed another one to Wang Jinglu, "Do you like this one?"

"Ah, Zhou Fen, this is great! I love listening to Zhou Fen's songs. This "Kong Xiang Jia" is my favorite, and my sister loves it too!" As she spoke, she returned the tape to Li Qian, "Just listen to this one!"

Then I listened to Zhou Pin's "Daydreamer".

This Walkman was left by Li Qian, and he also left dozens of cassette tapes.

The portable cassette player was a domestic brand called "Nan Sheng", the sound quality was average, and the tapes were both new and old, with genuine and pirated versions mixed together. Among the twenty or so genuine tapes, more than half were popular songs, folk songs and light music, but there were also two rock albums, one Russian album and one English album - without exception, the covers of the two foreign language albums were all beauties.

These days, after rebirth, Li Qian would use the three hours or so of time each day, on his way to and from school, and before bed at night, to listen to music. In just a few days, he had already roughly gone through those dozens of cassette tapes.

It has to be said that although time and space have changed, history has changed, people have changed, it seems like everything has changed, but the trend and direction of social development haven't changed, music hasn't changed, art hasn't changed.

Li Qian's familiar songs from his previous life did not appear in this time and space, but good music, good musicians, and good singers were not absent. Some singers and some songs are even worth listening to repeatedly.

  For example, Flying Squad.

This is Li Qian's greatest discovery since his rebirth, and it can even be classified as a surprising one.

In this time and space, in the early 1970s, rock music was booming in the UK and soon swept the world. At that time, China's reform and opening-up had been going on for nearly a decade, and communication and exchanges with foreign countries were becoming more frequent. As a result, rock music easily entered China. By the end of the 1970s, underground rock music had flourished in China, with over a dozen influential bands emerging in places like Shuntian Prefecture, Songjiang Prefecture, and Guangzhou Prefecture.

Flying is one of the most powerful teams among them.

In 1981, the Flying Band recorded and released their first studio album "Wang Er Ma Zi Shi Tiao Gou", which quickly became popular throughout China. For over a decade afterwards, they remained one of the most popular rock bands in China, earning them the reputation as the "Kings of Chinese Rock".

Unfortunately, the original Li Qian didn't seem to be that interested in rock music, so Flying's tape only had one disc - their seventh studio album released in 1994, called "Dreams Enter the Machine".

Later, Li Qian also bought two other albums they released in recent years at an audio store. One was called "Driving Pigs to the West" and the other was called "The Son Cannot Help But Speak".

Their album sounds great, really good, with a bit of jazz and a bit of punk, but more of the flavor of popular rock, angry but not violent, resistant but not brutal, even two songs are just simple hymns to freedom... flexible and powerful.

Especially the bass of the band, the lower part is connected to the upper part, it's simply so cool that it's like a ghostly work!

In Li Qian's view, the level of this album is enough to rank among the top five albums in the domestic rock music scene in the 1990s, which was the heyday of Chinese rock. Compared with those albums by Cui Jian and Dou Wei, it may not be inferior at all.

So, it was almost from the first song on, Li Qian liked it.

Apart from this, of course, there is also a Zhou Yu.

Regarding the character "嫫", Li Qian specially looked up the dictionary: Legend has it that 5,000 years ago, the Yellow Emperor selected a woman with excellent virtue but extremely ugly appearance as his fourth wife to set an example for the world. He also said that having beauty without virtue is not true beauty, and women with virtue are truly beautiful regardless of their appearance." — This woman was called Mother Huan.

  So, "Ao" means ugly girl.

Although on the covers of those three tapes in Li Qian's hands, Zhou Fen was invariably heavily smoky and had a rebellious look, but it must be said that she was truly extremely beautiful.

Of course, the most important thing is that her voice really sounds good, especially her unique and delicate tone, which almost immediately made Li Qian think of that heavenly queen from another time and space.

In fact, Zhou Mei in this time and space is also a singer of the same level as Song Hye-kyo.

The three tapes she had on hand contained a total of thirty-one songs, mostly of medium to high quality, all very pleasant to listen to.

And Li Qian's favorite is her album "Daydreamer".

It's a coincidence, it seems this is many people's common favorite.

  …………

Two people walked along listening to songs and arrived at Daming Lake Cinema City East District Store, then they started discussing which movie to watch.

Li Qian came all the way to watch a movie, of course he didn't plan to just watch one.

Unlike others who come to have fun and relax over the weekend, he wanted to take the opportunity to understand the current domestic film market. So, without consulting Wang Jing too much, Li Qian chose three films in one breath. The timing was just right, and they could switch from this hall to that hall, watching until 12:30!

It's just six movie tickets...a bit expensive!

"Hey, why did you buy three tickets? How are we going to have lunch now?" Wang Jinglu asked in confusion after receiving the ticket.

"You can finish watching and then go eat!" he said.

"Why? Can't we eat first and then watch?"

"It's half price in the morning, but after 2 pm it's only 20% off! Idiot!"

"Oh... but are you sure we want to watch that many matches?"

"Yeah, I was originally planning to spend a movie Saturday anyway! Hey, you're not regretting coming with me, are you? Then I'll go help you refund the tickets, okay? Do you know how much three tickets cost? I'm almost heartbroken!"

"You think I'm leaving? No way!... Hey, actually I have money on me, how about I pay you back tonight? I don't dare to fight with you over the bill, I'm afraid others will laugh at you."

"Just kidding... forget about the money, you can treat me to dinner after we're done!"

"Okay, okay, what do you want to eat? I love eating at a noodle shop near here. I remember when I was little, my sister would bring me to watch movies and we'd always go eat noodles there afterwards. How about we go together later?"

"You seem really excited today, talking a lot!"

"What do you want to eat then?"

"I want to eat... Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles."

"But Lanzhou noodles are not delicious! ...Okay, then let's eat Lanzhou noodles, I haven't had them for a long time, it's okay to have one more time!"

"Hey, kidding aside, your IQ has really dropped a lot lately... just go eat some rice noodles, I want a large serving!"

  "Alright, alright! My treat!"

  …………

There are seven movies showing today, Li Qian bought the first ticket called "Love Won't Lose", should be... an urban romance movie? Looking at the poster it seems like an urban light comedy, whatever, let's just watch and see, Wang Jinglu should like it. Even if she doesn't like it, it's okay, anyway she originally didn't like watching movies.

The second part is a big imported film, according to the ticket seller, it was just introduced from the United States, not long ago it was just released in the United States, the promotional slogan says that the box office is over 70 million US dollars, currently ranking 6th in North American box office in '95... should be very good.

Yeah, because the movie's name translates to "Proud and Loud", starring... Schwarzenegger!

The third part is domestic... blockbuster!

The ticket seller said so anyway.

  "The White-Clothed Swordsman"
