“We’ve got to hurry!” A shrill, urgent voice pulled me awake from my slumber. As always, it originated from beyond the walls. From beyond my room.
I lifted my head only to have my sight concealed by a pile of books.
Multiple piles of books surrounded me, essentially blocking my sight from the only window inside. I pulled yet another all-nighter, reading book after book. I rubbed my eyes, unsuccessfully warding off the fatigue.
When I opened my eyes again, I finally noticed the light from the other side of the glass. It seemed like there were people here again. However, no light was turned on inside my room, which was... unusual.
I didn’t have time to ponder the meaning behind this unusual occurrence as a loud creaking noise startled me out of my thoughts. I looked behind me to see a sight I couldn’t quite comprehend.
The wall came apart.
A small line appeared down the middle, separating the wooden surface into two. They soon separated as though they were moving away from each other. These four walls have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. They were an unmovable force that contained me inside the existence that was this room. They were an entity that seemed like nothing short of a law of nature to me. Now, one of those entities is split into two existences. They separated from one another in a way that would, to me, be permanent.

The sight had me shell-shocked, as I couldn’t avert my eyes. I was so enraptured that I failed to notice what formed between these two entities. It was something invisible, but it contained a frightening darkness. I soon realized that the walls of this room were replaced with a completely new existence I never bore witness to before. It was a space shrouded in darkness with no visible wall that could possibly contain it. It looked... empty. I stood completely still, afraid of moving a single muscle. Soon enough, two shadowy figures appeared. They... moved. They were the first things I’ve ever seen that moved independently. They were the first things that, like me, had legs to walk. Even when the light from the window exposed their proper form, I could not understand their appearance or differentiate them from each other.
Soon enough, I learned that these were living beings.
Soon enough, I would discover them as the entities known as humans.
Soon enough, I would understand that the void they emerged from was the outside.
Soon enough, I would recognize the objects in their hands were knives.
