Volume 11 : Chapter 2 - DID I JUST ENROLL IN A MAGIC ACADEMY IN THE FIRST CHAPTER? (2)

  Chapter 2

DID I JUST ENROLL IN A MAGIC ACADEMY IN THE FIRST CHAPTER? (2)

That night, after returning from the labyrinth, I gave my all to prepare a feast for Mom and Dad.

As much as I wanted to bring Elly, my ever-loyal second-in-command, back home with me, it was simply impossible. No matter how skilled Elly was at concealing herself, Mom and Dad would sense her presence in an instant.

Revealing my spider network wasn’t worth the risk—it had to remain a carefully guarded secret. For the safety of my spiders and to uphold the secrecy of my spider network organization.

After all, power squandered carelessly is meaningless. Or at least that’s what I have heard.

I enlisted Flora’s help in preparing dinner. The homunculus I had created diligently helped me to prepare all the dishes.

The kitchen was filled with the sizzling sounds of frying various kinds of exquisite meat I brought back from Oakhart rearing farms, along with the rich aroma of roasted spices and freshly baked bread.

The sheer amount of food we prepared was staggering —enough to feed an entire battalion. And that was exactly what I intended to do.

Once the cooking was complete, I carefully packed the dishes onto massive platters, balancing them with magic as I transported them to my spider network.

The moment I arrived, my little arachnid subordinates swarmed around me, their many legs skittering excitedly against the floor. I placed the food before them, and with chittering noises of delight, they eagerly began their feast.

“Eat up.” I said with a grin, watching them devour the food with enthusiasm.

As their boss, it was my duty to ensure they were well cared for and to give them a taste of the perks of working with me.

And where could I have found subordinates that would work for me for free… Ahem…I mean to say what better way to show my appreciation than with a meal worthy of their efforts.

Afterward, I returned home just in time for our family dinner. The four of us—Mom, Dad, Flora, and I—gathered around the table to enjoy our dinner together.

Dad, however, looked completely exhausted and as pale as a ghost—like he had just survived a near-death experience with Mom’s handmade cake. And despite the torment he might have endured, he braved it with a smile on his face.

I wanted to help him —I really did. But without a proper excuse, I couldn’t just use my healing magic on him without raising suspicion from mother.

That’s when an idea struck me. If I couldn’t heal him directly, I could at least get him something to help him with his recovery.

  ―A gift.

For that, I needed to leave home. And so, after much deliberation, I finally made up my mind.

I broached the topic with Mom. “I’ve decided. I am going on another adventure.”

Mom’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Tomorrow?” she asked.

I nodded. “Yes. There’s something I need to find. And besides, it’s a good opportunity to continue exploring.”

Dad looked at me with concern. “You just returned, and now you’re leaving again?”

I gave him a reassuring smile. “I’ll be fine. Besides, last time, I even succeeded in forming my own party.”

Mom’s eyes sparkled with pride. “You formed your own party on your first try! I just knew my baby could do it!” She beamed, leaning in with eager curiosity. “Come on, sweetheart, tell me all about your new party members!”

I began recounting my first adventure. “Well, there’s Elsie. And then there’s Ken—”

Before I could continue, Mom’s expression darkened, and Dad suddenly sat up straighter.

“So, your first partner on your first adventure was a boy?”

Dad's tone was sharp, and mom's eyes gleamed with a dangerous light.

“Did he approach you first?” she demanded.

“Did he try to threaten you or something? Did he—” Dad cut in.

I blinked, completely taken aback by the barrage of questions. “What? No! He is the one who helped me first previously, and then we met again! It was a complete coincidence that we met.”

Dad folded her arms, looking unconvinced. “And how do you know he wasn’t following you? There are all kinds of brats out there with ulterior motives.”

“I needed to return the favor for his previous help, and since he needed my help this time, I formed a party with him.”

Dad didn’t look convinced. “Still, a boy traveling with my daughter… Unacceptable.”

I sighed, rubbing my temples. Thinking they were overreacting.

“Alicia, if they ever try to pull anything on you, make sure to hit them right where it hurts the most.” Mom hummed thoughtfully.

  “Umu.” I nodded.

Dad stroked his chin. “Hmm. I suppose that’s… acceptable.”

I shared my entire adventure with them as we talked late into the night, extending our conversation over a cup of tea.

After all, tomorrow, my adventure would begin anew.

  ◇◇◇

The next day, I said goodbye to mom, dad, and Flora, exchanging warm hugs and reassuring smiles. But as soon as I stepped out of the house, I vanished in a flash of light—not to the outside world, but to the 98th floor instead.

A little detour before my real mission.

Elly was already waiting for me; her front limbs crossed as three enormous spiders skittered beside her. As we had discussed, she had recruited these three to work alongside my human companions.

Their dark, glossy bodies reflected the dim dungeon light, and their multiple eyes blinked eerily. In a word, they looked formidable.

Elly raised her forelimb as if signaling the three creatures, and they swiftly shrank.

“Perfect.” I said, my eyes gleaming. “Alright! Let’s go. Time to introduce you to your new partners.”

Without another word, I teleported—this time, back to Oakhart, deep in the rugged mountains where Izek usually trained.

The moment I arrived, Izek's sharp eyes locked onto me, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of his sword. His instincts were improving.

“Miss Alicia, you're back early.” Izek warmly greeted me.

I smiled. “Yes. I have something for you.”

He shook his head slightly as if anticipating my next words. “I told you before, I don’t need anything. The honor of serving and protecting you is more than enough.”

I chuckled. “Consider this a perk of the job. While I’m at the academy, I won’t be able to help with your training directly. So, I’ve brought someone to assist you.”

Izek raised an eyebrow. “That sounds promising.” He glanced around, searching for the so-called trainer. “I am sorry. But are they still not here?”

I lifted my hand, palm up, revealing a small, delicate-looking spider no larger than a baseball. Its white body was lined with intricate silver markings. Twitching its tiny legs, it turned around to face Izek.

  Izek stiffened. “A... monster?”

“Yes. It’s my friend.” I said, grinning.

Izek hesitated, his gaze shifting from me to the spider. A bead of sweat formed at his temple as he instinctively stepped back. Even without engaging it, I could tell he sensed its true strength.

“Where did you find this —little guy?” His words trailed off as realization dawned. He could feel it. The monstrous power compressed within that tiny form.

“Don’t worry, it won’t harm you.” I assured him. “It would be nice if you could train with him, and I have already instructed this little guy to do the same. I would have made sure to stick longer, but I have my own work.”

  “I see goodbye, Lady Alicia.”

“And if you ever find yourself in danger, it will let me know. It’ll be by your side to help you from now on.”

I turned to leave but paused for one last word of advice. “Give it everything you’ve got, Izek. Don’t hold back for even a second.” I hesitated briefly. “Because if you do, you just might die.”

And with that, I teleported away.

The moment I vanished, the spider settled on the ground, then scuttled forward. Izek watched it warily as it moved a few paces away, then stopped —legs spreading, fangs glistening, adopting an unmistakable battle stance.

Izek thought for a moment about what kind of damage a little spider could really do.

Before he could start wondering, the spider began to grow.

The spider’s tiny form expanded rapidly, legs stretching, exoskeleton thickening, until it loomed five times Izek’s size.

Its many eyes gleamed like polished stone as it reared up and lunged at him with terrifying speed.

Izek’s instincts screamed. This was no ordinary creature. The sheer density of magic surrounding it, the way the air twisted under its presence —he had never encountered anything like it.

With no hesitation, he raised his strongest magic shield, forcing his aura out in the short time he had left before the impact.

Because this was no longer a sparring match. But a fight for survival.

  ...

I had decided against assigning a spider to Regis. She would hate having something constantly watching her. Or possess something she hadn't earned through her own hard work.

It would tick her off in ways I didn’t even want to imagine.

If I were to get her anything, it would have to be something that suited her temperament. I am sure I would be able to come up with something later on.

The same went for Athena, Hana, and Lucia. I did not wanted to burden them with any kind of responsibilities and live their life freely.

That left Caige, Maia’s team, and Nia’s team, who were also working for me.

With my decision made, I teleported to the Valoria Kingdom, where Caige and Maia were waiting for me.

By now, their discussions in Valoria had concluded, and fortunately, the Valorian family had taken a strong liking to the healing potion.

“So, how did the talks go?”

“Luckily, the Valorian family loved the healing potions and its amazing healing effects. They were so impressed that they signed all the contracts on the spot with the Sierra Union and even agreed to fully support us in setting up the shop here.” Caige gave a brief overview.

I was right in leaving all the negotiations to Caige.

“Thank you for your hard work. And I have got something special for all of you as well.” I said with a grin. “But first, we’ve got somewhere to be.”

Without further explanation, I teleported Caige and Maia along with me. In a blink, the three of us vanished, instantly reappearing in the heart of Stark Kingdom.

The bustling streets of the Stark capital city stretched before us, filled with merchants selling their wares, knights making their patrol rounds, and townsfolk going about their daily lives.

Caige and Maia wasted no time leading me toward our destination —our newly opened healing potion shop, a venture established under the Sierra Union.

As we approached, a beautifully carved wooden sign swung gently above the entrance, the name ’Sierra Union’ etched into its surface in shimmering silver letters.

The shop itself was warm and inviting, with polished wooden counters displaying rows upon rows of shimmering blue potions with hues of different intensities.

This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

The richer the color, the stronger the effect.

Outside, a long line of eager customers stretched beyond the door, reaching all the way to the end of the street.

“Are they really going to stand in this line until the closing time today, too?” Maia remarked.

Caige, ever the opportunist, wore a familiar greedy expression, already calculating the hefty profits we would be making in by the end of the day.

The building was a two-story structure with a beautiful backyard. With the front gate crowded with customers, we decided to enter through the attached backyard instead.

It featured a carefully maintained garden, newly planted and well-kept.

“These flowers were planted by the workers here, and they live on the second floor.” Caige informed me.

I was pleased to see how proactive the workers were in maintaining the shop at this level —and equally impressed by Caige’s keen eye for hiring such dedicated employees.

“Would you like to meet the employees?” Maia asked me.

“I would love to, but I don’t want to disturb them while they're working. Plus, I have some tasks I need to start right away.” I replied.

“Is that so?” Maia looked disappointed, as if she had promised something to the employees.

“But once I’m done with my work, I’ll come back and meet them for sure.” I assured her.

“Okay.” Maia smiled, her mood lifting.

“Welcome back.” A familiar voice chimed in from the back.

Nia stepped forward, wiping her hands on a cloth, her sharp black eyes gleaming with pride. Followed behind by her team consisting of Ivy, Mars and Prowl.

They looked tired, but they had more of a carefree look on their faces.

“Everything’s running smoothly?” I asked, trying to be an upright boss.

  “Better than expected.” Nia replied.

“We just cleared a dungeon and rushed over the moment we heard you were coming back!” Ivy exclaimed, bouncing with excitement as she tapped her magic staff on the ground.

Nia reported that, as per my instructions, they had been guarding the shop without any issues and had handled every problem that arose. Of course, there had been a few break-ins and some attempts to sabotage our business.

However, with Caige’s clever tactics and Nia’s stealth, they had no trouble thwarting those threats.

It also seemed that Nia’s team was steadily raising our Sierra Clan’s ranking in the Adventurers’ Guild by successfully clearing dungeons.

“Great work, everyone.” I smiled, letting my gaze sweep over them. “Now, it’s time for me to give you what I came here for.”

Nia and Caige exchanged glances, their expressions flickering with curiosity. Around them, the others murmured, wondering what I had in store.

I slowly pulled back my hands and then brought my exposed palms forward. A faint pulse of magic rippled through the air as two small, fur-covered creatures materialized in front of them.

At first, they looked like nothing more than round, velvety balls rolling on my palms. But the moment they sensed the open space around them, they unfurled—eight tiny legs stretching out in smooth, fluid motions.

Then, without warning, they sprang to life.

In a blur of movement, the two creatures leapt from my hands, one landing on Caige’s shoulder, the other on Nia’s.

“What are they—?!” Nia flinched, instinctively trying to take a step back. Her instincts flared as a sudden wave of intense magic washed over her.

But her speed failed to dodge and keep up with the motion of the creature who latched onto her.

Her fingers twitched, reaching for her blade at her side, but she hesitated. She quickly realized there was no hostility.

Caige, however, remained completely still. She couldn’t sense magic like the others, so she simply adjusted the belt at her waist, her sharp eyes then studying the creature now perched on her shoulder.

  —Only observing.

“What are these?” Maia asked warily, shifting slightly as if debating whether to knock the creature off Caige or not.

“Are they monsters?” Ivy added, eyeing them with suspicion.

  I chuckled.

“Yes, they are my friends. And that’s why I brought them here. They’re going to help you with your work. I expect you to treat them well.”

Mars, the brute fighter, folded his arms and scoffed. “Can these tiny things even do anything?”

I smirked. “You’d be surprised. With them by your side, you won’t have to worry about anything— not a demon lord, not even a hero. They’ll protect you, assist you, and they can also understand your language. If you’re ever in danger, they’ll alert me instantly. From this moment on, they will stay with you forever.”

  Silence fell over the group.

“Stronger than… hero or demon lord class?” Nia and Caige echoed in unison, their voices tinged with disbelief. Unlike the others, they truly understood the weight of those words.

That fact alone would place them in the category of world disaster-class monsters. And not even for a moment, Caige or Nia thought that Alicia could merely be exaggerating.

Monsters of such caliber existed only in myths now.

A new thought crossed both their minds at the same time.

‘She said they’ll always be with us… does she mean for protection—or surveillance?’

‘If that was the case, then these creatures were more than mere gifts.’

‘They were watchers —perhaps meant to observe us, ensuring we never made a mistake or acted against miss Alicia’s promise.‘ Caige and Nia gulped.

“Well then, we’ll be sure to treat them with the utmost respect.” Caige and Nia exclaimed together.

Caige ran a finger along the golden spider now nestled on her shoulder. “I already like this one. It’s my favorite color.”

Nia, too, seemed pleased. She pulled her ponytail forward, allowing the obsidian-black spider to crawl onto her shoulder from one side to the other. The way its deep, midnight hue blended with her dark black hair made it seem like it belonged there.

“And mine fits perfectly with my hair color.” Nia mused, admiring the creature’s sleek, glistening form.

A sense of satisfaction welled up inside me. I was certain they all adored having a friendly spider to play with and rely on—just like my dear Elly.

I am sure the black spider will help Nia’s team in their fight against the Belladonna organization and save her little sister. While the golden spider will make it easier for Caige to keep her eyes around everything.

“Now, back to business there’s something important I need to ask.” The thought suddenly resurfaced, and I couldn't ignore it any longer.

Caige tilted her head, eyes narrowing slightly. “Is this about that work you mentioned before?”

The others leaned in slightly, eagerly awaiting to hear my response. It was as if they expected some grand revelation.

“I want to know where I can find the best magic books.”

For a brief second, the group in front of me appeared to trip funnily.

Caige sighed, rubbing her temples. “Magic books? I think your best bet would be the Magic Towers. They collect all sorts of ancient and bizarre things and that includes even rare magic books.”

A flicker of intrigue passed over Nia’s face as a memory resurfaced. “I remember being on a mission once... There was this massive library filled with cursed artifacts and forbidden cursed magic books. Just stepping inside gave me chills.”

My eyes sparkled at the mention of cursed books. Of course! Father loved them most. What better way to cheer him up than with one from the most famous Magic Tower out there? It will be a ‘Get Well Soon’ gift like no other.

I smiled to myself. He’s going to love this.

“So,” I continued, my excitement barely contained, “where can I find the best of the best magic tower?”

“I suppose the largest magic tower is in the magic kingdom of Arcadia. It's located next to the Stark Kingdom to the east and right above the Grindelwald Kingdom on the map. And if I remember correctly, you’ll be joining the magic academy in Grindelwald soon, right? That tower has close ties to the academy as well, from what I've heard.” Caige was well-informed as usual.

A Kingdom of Magic. With the greatest Magic Tower.

The thought sent a thrill through me. This was perfect.

“How will I know when I’ve reached Arcadia?” I asked.

“You will know when you see it. They have the tallest and biggest Magic Tower in the world. There’s no way you can miss it to spot it even from as far as their borders.” Nia’s unexpected answer grabbed my attention.

A towering monument of magic, visible from miles away? That only made me more impatient.

“Got it. Thanks for the info—I’ll be back soon.”

With that, I raised my hand in farewell, my magic flaring as I teleported to the outer walls of Stark’s Capital. The second my feet touched the ground, I summoned a gust of wind beneath me, launching myself into the sky.

The eastern horizon stretched before me, the wind whipping through my hair as I soared toward Arcadia. Flying freely like a bird with wind magic, becoming one with the clouds.

I couldn’t wait to see the kingdom of magic with my own eyes.

  —

  Meanwhile…

  “Wait… Alicia’s gone?!”

Caige reached out instinctively, but her fingers closed around empty air. She could only watch in mild exasperation as Alicia vanished right in front of them.

“She didn’t even let me tell her that getting into a Magic Tower is nearly impossible.”

Nia let out a chuckle, arms behind her head. “I’m sure she has something special in mind.”

Caige sighed. “I suppose… we’ll just leave it at that.”

  ◇◇◇

In the heart of Arcadia’s capital, at the grand fountain square, two figures stood amidst the bustling crowd —a prince and his sworn knight.

“Prince, did you have any luck?” Elsie asked, glancing around, her expression laced with exhaustion.

“You can just call me Ken in public.” the young man replied. He opened his hand, revealing a cluster of dull, harsh purple stones— lackluster and devoid of magic. “No. None of them here are skilled enough to refine these.”

  Elsie’s shoulders slumped. “Me neither.”

The two had spent hours scouring Arcadia’s streets, searching for a magician or alchemist capable of processing the newly discovered Jade Province’s Ore. Its properties were unknown, and no one in the Nova Empire had the knowledge —or rather, no one Ken trusted.

That left them with only one option.

“The Magic Tower.” Ken said with a sigh. “If we can’t find anyone, then we’ll have to go there. If nothing else, they might have texts that tell us what this ore is or an artifact to extract its mineral.”

Elsie looked dejected. “Isn’t it… almost impossible to enter the Magic Tower?”

That was precisely why they had searched the streets first. The mages of the tower were notorious for their isolation, lost in their research, unwilling to be disturbed by outsiders. And they had the highest level of security so no successful break in have been reported in the past decade.

Even royals had to go through months of negotiations just to step foot inside.

Ken smirked. “I’ve figured out a way, and we will also be making some money while we are at it.”

“I like the sound of that.” Elsie looked excited despite being unaware of what the prince had planned.

Ken turned on his heel. “Then it’s time we paid a visit to the Adventurer’s Guild.”

At the Arcadia Adventurer’s Guild, Ken and Elsie walked straight to the front desk.

“Do you have any quests related to the Magic Tower?” Ken asked the receptionist, getting straight to the point to not waste any more time.

“Yes, we do have one. Funny thing—you’re the second person to ask about that today.” The young receptionist gleefully answered.

‘Why do I have a bad feeling about this?’ Ken felt a chill run down his spine.

“How long ago?” Ken asked right away.

The receptionist glanced at the clock. “Not long. The other person might not have processed the request yet. You can still check the board.”

Ken exchanged a look with Elsie.

‘Just who else was aiming for the Magic Tower today?’ the two couldn’t help but think.

Ken and Elsie rushed toward the Adventurers’ Guild quest board, their eyes scanning frantically for a quest that could grant them a free pass into the Magic Tower.

“―Finally found it.” A sweet voice rejoiced.

“Found it…” Ken found his voice overlapping with someone else.

At that moment, two hands landed on the same parchment, gripping opposite corners of the quest paper. For a brief second, Ken’s fingers froze.

  That voice —it was familiar.

His gaze lifted. So did the other person’s.

  And then, they locked eyes.

A boy with an attitude who never appreciated anything.

An irritating girl with a weird mask who never listened to anyone.

That was how they remembered each other.

Neither spoke their name. Neither made the effort to introduce themselves. Instead, they stared each other down, as if ready to tear the other apart.

“I will be taking this quest.”

“Don’t be stubborn,” Ken scoffed. “Go take something else. This one doesn’t suit you.”

“That’s for me to decide.” the masked girl shot back. “Let me have it. You can find something else —probably one that pays way better.”

Behind them, Elsie’s eyes widened in recognition. “Alicia…?”

But Alicia didn’t acknowledge her. Nor did Ken seem aware of his surroundings anymore.

The two of them were caught in a silent battle, a conversation unfolding in their minds.

‘I still don’t know who she really is behind that mask. And meeting her again —here of all places is it really a coincidence? I gain nothing from telling her why I need to enter the Magic Tower.’

‘Why is Ken here? Were mom and dad, right? Is he following me? Should I just kick him now? No… he’s helped me more than once. I suppose I can give him a free pass—just this time. But if he has his own reason for this quest… then maybe it really is just coincidence.’

Ken was the first to break the silence.

  “…Fine. Let’s do it together.”

He released the paper, letting Alicia take it.

For a fleeting moment, they exchanged a glance as if coming to a mutual understanding.

Elsie, who had been bracing for a fight, blinked in confusion. ‘That’s it?’ She couldn’t shake the feeling that these two had somehow communicated without words, and for some reason… she felt left out.

Elsie blamed herself for not being able to get the quest for her master first and looked dejectedly downwards.

“Let’s form a temporary party again.” Alicia said.

But this time, Elise heard the voice much closer, and when she looked up —Alicia’s hand was extended toward her.

  “Okay.” Elsie murmured, gripping it.

Ken smirked, crossing his arms. “Alright. Let’s do it.”

Ken, Elsie, and Alicia headed back to the receptionist to get their quest officially assigned.

The receptionist glanced at their records and raised an eyebrow.

“I see… You three have already completed a quest together as a temporary party in another city. That’s quite rare—most adventurers don’t cross paths again. But if you have good teamwork, you might just be able to overcome this one as well.”

The words struck the trio as odd, but none of them dwelled on it. Their true goal was the Magic Tower, and nothing else mattered.

After leaving the guild, the three soon arrived at the Magic Tower’s outer gates —only to be stopped at the towering stone walls, still some distance from the actual tower itself.

Ken stepped forward and handed the approved quest form from the Adventurers’ Guild.

“We’re here on an official request.” he stated.

One of the guards eyed them with suspicion. “I trust you’ve prepared properly for this? This isn’t some sightseeing trip. Many adventurers think they can just waltz into the Magic Tower for fun. But they can’t be more wrong.”

“Yep, we get all kinds of reckless fools. So, don’t try anything foolish.” another guard added with a chuckle.

The first guard sighed. “Head to the back gate. I’ll send word to someone to inform you about the job in more detail.”

The trio exchanged brief glances. They weren’t interested in the guard’s warnings—nor did they care about the details of the job itself.

All they needed was to get inside the tower.

Still, they complied. Without a word, they made their way to the back gate, moving with just enough obedience to keep the guards from getting suspicious while also ensuring everyone believed they were just here for the quest.

  ◇◇◇

A man wearing the official uniform of the Arcadia Magic Tower’s management arrived at the back gates of the outer walls.

As soon as he unlatched the gate, a strong gust of wind rushed in, forcing him to squint as his long robes whipped wildly around him. One particularly loose strip of fabric snapped against his face, momentarily blocking his vision.

With an irritated grunt, he pulled the cloth away—only to find himself standing alone.

  No one was there.

A deep sigh escaped his lips. “Hah. Knew it. They ran off like all the others.” he muttered under his breath, shaking his head.

The guards at the front gate must have scared them off—or maybe they had enough sense to realize this job wasn’t worth the risk. Not for any amount of gold.

“Smart choice,” he scoffed, folding his arms. “Even I wouldn’t take this job willingly.”

Still, duty demanded he file an official report. His fingers clenched into a fist at the thought of spending the night in the office overworking.

He pulled the lever to close down the back gate.

Just as he turned to retreat into the safety of the tower’s walls, a sudden chill crawled up his spine.

It was subtle at first. Then, it grew —a presence pressing down on him, unseen but unmistakable.

  His throat tightened.

Slowly, hesitantly, he turned his head—only to find the back gate still empty. Didn’t I close the door just now? Did it not work?

The man was confused at the bizarre situation in front of him but decided not to think too much about it.

“I’ll lodge a formal complaint to the Adventurers’ Guild… and then I’m done. I quit. I’ve put up with this madness for long enough.”

I know the initial volumes sometimes could be a mess in my disastrous writing and the current writing still leaves a lot to be desired as the story proceeds and new characters keeps popping up. And I intend to take this challenge head on and improve everyday in this year as well.

You can support my writing by leaving a good review on my book on the platform you are reading.

And even now I am asking for a bit more that if you want to voluntarily support my writing then you can do it now.
