Hearing the melodious voice of VBB coming from the loudspeaker, Lin Hong's face revealed a hint of a smile. He picked up the intercom and pressed the call button: "BG1VBB, this is BG7XZZ, signal 59, extremely clear. Over."
When hams are communicating or testing equipment such as transceivers and antennas, they often request that the other party provide a signal report, which includes parameters such as signal strength and voice clarity.
Common "signal reports" include voice readability and signal strength.
The intelligibility of speech, also known as clarity, reflects how clear the sound is and whether it can be heard clearly. It is divided into five levels from low to high, with level 1 being the lowest, completely unintelligible, and level 5 being the highest, indicating extremely clear without any noise; if there is noise, it should be level 4 or below.
The signal strength is divided into nine levels, with level 1 being the lowest and indicating a very weak signal, while level 9 indicates an extremely strong signal without any interference.
When reporting, people usually use numerical shorthand such as "11", "58", and "59". "11" indicates extremely poor signal strength, making communication impossible. On the other hand, "59" represents the best possible signal condition.
"Finally on air, I've been waiting for a long time!"
It can be heard from the tone that VBB sounds extremely happy.
Lin Hong: "Sorry, something came up earlier so I didn't go online... over."
Compared to other "ham" often said on air, Lin Hong prefers to call it online, unless communicating with other "countries"' hams, Lin Hong generally uses the corresponding English expression.
"It's okay, I just got up a bit early today... over."
Lin Hong: "Your mood seems pretty good, is there something worth being excited about... over."
"Oh yeah, I've found it! There's a huge good news, I've successfully obtained my own amateur radio license! Hehe... Celebrate for me! From now on, I won't have to use my brother's radio and call sign anymore! Over."
Lin Hong was taken aback: "Really? I represent the Fire Ham to send a congratulatory telegram! Welcome to officially become a member of the Fire Ham!"
Lin Hong's heart moved slightly, he had guessed VBB's age, according to national regulations, the minimum age for obtaining an amateur radio license is sixteen years old.
"It seems she should be about four years older than me."
Lin Hong is only twelve years old this year and has not yet reached the statutory age for applying for a license, so he has been using Old Xu's license for these few years.
"My new call sign name is BG1QBB, remember it ~~"
Lin Hong: "Received, I've remembered it. We'll use this call sign for communication from now on. Congratulations again! BG1QBB... over."
"Hey, when are you going to apply for your own call sign? Don't think that just because your voice has changed to a lower frequency, you can pretend to be an adult now. Your call sign is still "Daddy's" anyway, don't forget, it was me, your sister, who introduced you to this world in the first place~~over."
Uncle level... Lin Hongyi one head black line.
In order to communicate smoothly with other ham radios without causing unnecessary trouble, Lin Hong manually made a small device that modulated his audio, changing his original childish voice into a thick and heavy male middle tone. This way, when others communicated with him, they wouldn't refuse to talk to him because of his voice.
Lin Hong thought for a moment and said, "This is the call sign that my grandfather helped me apply for. I've been using it all along and don't want to change it now. QBB classmate, I also have some good news to tell... over."
"Have you been using this call sign all along? Well... What good news do you have to tell me, and yet you're still keeping me in suspense, humph!...... over."
Lin Hong: "My call sign has also changed, from now on please address me as bd7xzz, notification... over."
"Wow! I've been promoted again! Am I already a second-level operator...?"
Lin Hong: "Yes, I received a certificate from the Amateur Radio Association this afternoon. Congratulations to me!"
Lin Hong's face also showed a smile when he said that. Sharing each other's good news had always been an indispensable topic of conversation between the two, and over time, it had gradually become a way for them to show off to each other, often even asking each other to congratulate them.
With Lin Hong's personality, in real life, he would absolutely not speak to others like this, and only on the radio with this little teacher would they tease each other like this.
Amateur radio operators are also divided into grades, with a total of four levels in the country. The fourth level is the lowest and the first level is the highest. Each level has different permissions, and the allowed transmitter power size and frequency range are also different.
Lin Hong didn't receive a response from the other side for half a day after sending the letter.
Just as Lin Hong was feeling surprised, QBB's voice sounded again:
"What a little freak~~ actually became a level 2 operator so quickly! My god, in just three short years, he's already risen from level 4 to level 2...... I don't even know what language to use to describe my emotions right now, all that's left is admiration... and envy!"
Lin Hong said he was speechless.
"xzz classmate, now I have my own call sign, I command you to mail the QSL card over immediately... otherwise... otherwise I will ignore you from now on... too hurtful for my self-esteem... over."
QSL card is a communication card for amateur radio enthusiasts, also known as hams. After two hams have communicated with each other, they will send each other a postcard-sized card to confirm their communication and serve as proof of their contact. Collecting QSL cards from hams around the world is one of the many interesting aspects of ham radio.
Because these cards are usually designed and made by the hams themselves, the patterns on the cards can reflect local customs and conditions, or their own related photos, but some content must be included.
For example, in China, three items must be included. First is the emblem of Chinese Radio Sports Association, second is the CQ zone and ITU zone where the ham is located, these two are used to indicate the geographical location of the ham. In addition, it must also include the English translation "a" of "People's Republic of China Amateur Radio Station".
Only when the above three items are met can it be considered a legitimate QSL card recognized by the country. Of course, on the card generally also includes such as the ham's own call sign, name, address, opponent's call sign, date and time of communication between the two parties, frequency and method, etc. Even more detailed, some specific parameters of one's own radio station will be attached.
In short, the number of cards collected can reflect a hamster's seniority from the side, and the national hamster level upgrade certification is also established on the basis of cards. For example, to advance from level 4 to level 3, you need to collect a certain number of cards to successfully advance.
Lin Hong had his own QSL card long ago, which he personally designed and entrusted to a friend in the provincial capital of Lingnan Province to print at a printing factory, and 5,000 were printed at once.
Over the past three years, Lin Hong had collected more than 200 cards, at least 70 or 80 of which were from abroad. According to domestic regulations, if you have more than 50 foreign cards, you can apply for a second-level certification. If it weren't for the income earned from repairing electrical appliances, Lin Hong wouldn't have had enough money to mail these cards.
However, because QBB didn't have his own call sign before, they haven't exchanged QSL cards yet.
"Alright, give me the address... over."
After he said this, in a certain room of the quadrangle courtyard near Nanhai in Beijing, a girl with a ponytail jumped up from her chair excitedly and shouted happily:
“yes!”
