Chapter 10 Showing Off

The sky was still almost completely dark, and the people in the dormitory started to get up one after another. Gu Xiyan had tossed and turned for a long time before falling asleep last night, but when everyone woke up this morning, she was still fast asleep.

Lile Ting washed up and then went to Gu Xiyan's bedside and pushed her a few times: "Xiyan, Xiyan, get up quickly, or you'll be late and it will be terrible!"

When Gu Xiyan opened her eyes, she only felt that her eyelids were heavy, and habitually, she closed them again to continue sleeping.

Leticia saw that Xiyan had just woken up and couldn't let her fall asleep again: "Xiyan, if you don't get up now, the instructor will definitely not let you off easy later."

The two words "instructor" suddenly reminded Gu Xiyan of her current situation, and she sat up abruptly. Although Gu Xiyan's consciousness was still not very clear, her hands had already taken the lead in quickly putting on the woolen sweater and camouflage uniform that she had placed at the head of the bed last night.

After getting out of bed, Gu Xiyan hurriedly started folding the quilt. Yesterday, Li Leting taught her several times the technique of folding tofu blocks, but she couldn't fold it to Li Leting's standard no matter what. At this moment, after flipping and folding the quilt several times, Gu Xiyan's result could only reach the soft and irregular "water tofu" state.

Lai Leting couldn't help but sigh, grabbing both hands on Gu Xiyan's quilt. Lai Leting said reluctantly: "Take another look."

Lai Leting's movements were as smooth as a flowing cloud, and Gu Xiyan couldn't help but sigh in admiration. Since Lai Leting had helped her fold the quilt, Gu Xiyan quickly went to brush her teeth and wash her face.

Gu Xiyan got up relatively late, and Li Leting was waiting for her while also urging her to hurry. When the two arrived at the cafeteria, there were already many people inside, so they quickly finished their breakfast, and then Li Leting rushed with Gu Xiyan to the training field.

New recruits officially start training at 7:00 every morning, but the company requires them to gather at the designated location by 6:30 every day. The two rushed to the designated sports ground and arrived exactly at 6:30, not a minute early or late.

Their instructor, Deng Qing, had already arrived a step ahead of them. Seeing the two rushing over in a hurry, a hint of displeasure flashed across her face.

"Reporting officer, new recruit Lei Leting of the female combat battalion requests to join the ranks." As she spoke, Lei Leting's heart was filled with trepidation, who knew...

It was the depths of winter, and at this moment the sky had not yet fully brightened. The road only had a few sparse street lamps, with weak light, and Li Le Ting took advantage of this semi-darkness to subtly tug on Gu Xi Yan's sleeve.

"Reporting officer, new recruit Gu Xiyan of the female combat battalion requests to join the ranks." Gu Xiyan knew what Lei Leting meant and followed suit.

"Gu Xiyan, new here?" Deng Qing sized up Gu Xiyan for a few moments.

"Reporting, sir." Gu Xiyan slightly lowered her head under the instructor's piercing gaze.

"This won't set a precedent, let's get in line." The sky was very cold, and Deng Qing's tone was also very cold. However, her one sentence made the people under her shocked beyond measure - Is this really Deng Qing? The iron-faced, impartial, and unyielding Deng Qing who doesn't tolerate tardiness, who punishes anyone late to training with half an hour of standing at attention without a second word? What's going on today? The sun hasn't even risen from the west yet, look, in the eastern sky there's a faint orange-red glow rising.

Gu Xiyan had just arrived and wasn't sure where to stand. Seeing Lai Leting already standing in her own position, she was a bit at a loss.

"Gu Xiyan, stand at the end of the first row." Deng Qing's voice rang out in time, resolving Gu Xiyan's confusion.

"Yes." Gu Xiyan also didn't dare say anything more and quickly jogged over to stand at attention.

"Everyone is present, attention!" Gu Xiyan had just stood up straight when Deng Qing's command to fall in rang out.

  "Right dress."

  "Look ahead."

"Each row has, from the first in line to the last in line, counted."

Deng Qing shouted out the slogan, and immediately the entire women's team responded in unison: "One, two, three..."

"Twelve." Gu Xiyan stood at the end of the row and stopped after shouting this sentence. After listening carefully, she heard that the female soldiers who reported numbers in the back rows would add the two words "Man Wu", so Gu Xiyan quickly added a "Man Wu".

"Is the first row full?" Deng Qing's gaze shot towards Gu Xiyan.

Gu Xiyan's heart, which had just calmed down, was stirred up again. Like a child who had done something wrong, she stuck her hands to the camouflage pants and curled them up slightly, not daring to look at Deng Qing.

"The first row, answer my question." Deng Qing said unequivocally.

"Report to the instructor, I don't know." Gu Xiyan suddenly replied loudly.

"I don't know who told you to spout nonsense. Drop and give me fifty, at attention for half an hour. If your posture isn't standard, you're not allowed back in the squad." Deng Qing gave the order coldly.

So, on the first day of training, Gu Xiyan immediately showed off in front of everyone.

Facing a female soldier standing at attention, Gu Xiyan was ordered: 'Heels together and parallel, toes pointing outward 60 degrees. Head straight, neck straight, mouth closed, chin slightly tucked in, eyes looking up at an angle of about 45 degrees, buttocks clenched and abdomen drawn in...'

"Pay attention to your hand movements, let your arms hang naturally, with your middle finger touching the seam of your pants and your thumb touching the second joint of your index finger. Don't be lazy." Deng Qing adjusted Gu Xiyan's posture and then walked in front of the female soldiers.

"Answer me, isn't it hard for you all to get up and train at this hour on a cold winter's day?" Deng Qing's voice was thick and powerful.

The female soldiers' camp was silent.

"Report back to me, is it tough?" Deng Qing's voice rose a few degrees, authoritative and powerful, almost like a roar from her chest cavity.

"Report to the instructor, no hardship." The female soldiers replied in the biting cold wind as if venting their emotions. The underlying implication of most of them was - only then would there be no ghost!

"Alright, remember what I said, no slacking off! The soldiers I, Deng Qing, have brought out have never been cowards. Perhaps you're now thinking that I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but I want to tell you, you are the elite troops' reserve team. If you don't have the skills, then don't take on the task. You think this little bit of training is something? This is just the basics. You're still far from becoming true special forces. If you now hold onto the idea that it's okay to slack off and not strive for more, I'm telling you clearly, you will never become a qualified special forces member. Train hard in peacetime, bleed less in wartime. If you don't want to die on the battlefield, then you must work harder than others. Once on the battlefield, those without skills can only be cannon fodder."

As she walked and spoke around the female soldiers' barracks, Deng Qing's face was calm and collected. The dawn light illuminated the eastern sky, casting a thin ray of light on her face, interpreting the two big words "Justice".

The female soldiers, after Deng Qing's words, either looked thoughtful, or lowered their heads in shame, or remained expressionless, or slightly disdainful...

"6:40, now everyone starts summarizing yesterday's training." After glancing at the table, Deng Qing walked to the front of the team.

The female soldiers took turns to share their training experiences, Gu Xiyan listened carefully and suddenly felt that the fatigue brought by standing at attention was nothing.

The best is yet to come!

"Gu Xiyan has entered the list." Deng Qing crossed her arms behind her back, and after all the female soldiers had finished their performances, she nodded slightly towards Gu Xiyan.

After standing for half an hour, Gu Xiyan's knee bones ached severely, her camouflage uniform was not thick enough, and her legs were frozen stiff. Despite this, Gu Xiyan didn't frown at all, she just obediently replied to Deng Qing with one word: "Yes". Then, she dragged her sore and stiff legs back to her own position.

"Today's morning mission, 5-kilometer light-armed long-distance raid, time limit 20 minutes, target Hill No. 3, start with my whistle." Deng Qing's eyes, full of awe-inspiring meaning, swept around the female soldiers under her command.

At 7:15, accompanied by a sharp whistle, Gu Xiyan set off with the main force.
