I open my eyes to my alarm blearing at me. Its obnoxious ping getting louder as I closed my eyes hoping it would silence itself. I slide my hand out of the covers and find my phone on the floor. I finally manage to stop the alarm, and stare at the roof. Another day, I think to myself, another day of the same thing. I can almost predict every detail of my day, because I know everything will be exactly the same as yesterday.
I get out of bed, and go to the bathroom to turn on the shower, the same thing I did yesterday morning. This mundane routine; ‘such is life’ I think to myself as I remove my pajamas and move under the warm water. After my shower, I go back to my bedroom to pick an outfit for the day, being sure to pick something not to similar to what I wore yesterday.
‘Not that it matters’, I think to myself, ‘no one would remember anyway’.
I pull the curtains back to reveal the damage from the storm last night. Dirty water flooding the balcony, as I notice that only the legs to the outdoor chairs remain.
“ha that’s just great’, I say to myself, bending down to pick up Midnight.
Midnight is my cat, he is completely black with huge green eyes that stare into my soul. Midnight purrs, and lets out a quiet meow, as I put him on the bed, and he watches me as I pull on my clothes.
I know he just wants his breakfast, but I appreciate the company. I stare into his huge eyes as he watches me,
“what?” I say, “too similar?”
I finish gathering my things, and get ready to leave the house. I give Midnight gentle scratch and a kiss on the head, before grabbing my keys.
“see you later buddy”, I say as I pull the door closed and walk out into the storms carnage.
Though the storm is over, the earth is still flooded with both water, and the unsecured furniture of my neighbours. I make my way over to my car, a bright blue SUV. Its nothing fancy but she gets me where I need to go.
As I approach my car, I see some minor hail damage to the bonnet.
I roll my eyes.
‘this is just what I need’ I think to myself, knowing that my registration is due soon, and knowing the

payment for the hail damage is just going to have to wait.
As I get closer, I see parchment crumbled up, under the windscreen wipers. I see the tail of the parchment flapping in the wind.
Curiosity gets the better of me. I carefully extract it from the cavity it landed itself in, and slowly unwrap it to reveal the message inside.
As I open the parchment, I notice a strange detail. The parchment isn’t wet in the slightest. It feels dry, like an old bone after just being dug up by one of those dinosaur hunters I was
watching on the television last night.
I put my hand on the windscreen, its soaking wet. ‘how strange’ I think to myself, drying my hand on the front of my jumper. Balls of water remain on my jumper, as I squish myself between my car, and my neighbours car, trying to put all my belongings on the front seat. As I do, I hold the parchment against myself, throw myself into the driver seat, and let out a
huge sigh of relief as I land.
I peel the parchment off myself, looking at it again.
I am shocked as I look down to see scattered letters on the parchment. It seems as though the letters have been revealed in the place of the water droplets from my jumper.
I watch as the letters vanish as the parchment quickly dries. I pause for a moment, flipping the paper over numerous times in disbelief. I pull the door closed, without taking my eyes
off the parchment. As I do, I hear a snap in the door.
The snap quickly pulls my attention away, I look down and see my drivers license lying in the
foot well in two pieces.
“Oh no! no no no!” I exclaim as I pick up the pieces. “Oh why does this always happen to me” I cry as I think about how even the simple price of a new piece of plastic is expensive
these days.
I look down at the half with my photo that says Camilla Maddison Ello- and try to piece it back together with the other to make my name whole “Camilla Maddison Elloroy”.
I sit in my disappointment for some time, before remembering the parchment. I discard my once perfect license and reach into my bag for my water bottle. I open the driver’s side door once again, and pour the contents of my water bottle over the parchment.
“EWOKS PORTAL IS OPEN… FOLLOW THE LIGHTENING TO REVEAL ITS ENTRANCE”
The message is written in what appears to be old-school cursive writing, and there is a symbol at the bottom of it, a water droplet will swirls in the middle that almost look like electricity is pulsing through it.
I examine the symbol closer, pulling it closer to my face as though I'm poor of vision. As I look it, I gentle trace the symbol with my index finger.
It lets out a loud zapping sound and I feel a tingle through my fingers.
“OUCH” I squeal as I throw the parchment across my car into the windscreen.
“Did it electrocute me?” I examine my finger closely, rubbing it to comfort myself.
“ouch ouch ouch” I say, looking up at the parchment.
But I pause, as I do. The sky has changed, there are lines of lightening in the sky. But this isn’t lightening, lightening doesn’t remain in the sky, it quickly vanishes. I get out of the car, stepping on my driver’s license as I do.
There is an eerie feeling in the air now. The whole street is completely quiet.
I look from the empty street to the sky, and lock my car and walk away, as I follow the lightening, guiding me into the unknown.
