Chapter 86 - Beast Lands Part 5

Making monstrosities was an interesting experience for Dan, and there was a reason he called their faction the Monster Mash. He had literally gotten different parts of beasts and mushed them together via system help. It had been a learning curve since it took certain combinations to truly call something a monstrosity. Still, he had eventually gotten the know-how to create monstrosities.

For example, giving a snake an additional head or tail did not count as a monstrosity. Same thing if he gave a dragonfly extra wings. And as he had already proven, increasing or decreasing the size of beasts did not classify them as monstrosities either.

Dan had narrowed the change to giving body parts not from the same monster, or enough body parts that it just didn’t count as a normal beast anymore.

Some good examples were when he gave a lion one hundred eyes or when he gave some snakes normal human legs. Both things he swore never to do again, probably. Honestly, both things were horrifying, and he might add them to some sort of horror area of his dungeon later on.

Anyways, after figuring out the monstrosity part of monster making, Dan had begun the creation of new monstrosities he would use for his first dungeon floor.

The first monstrosity he looked to make was going to be a boss. This boss was going to be the unholy combination of two creatures whom he named the Dangeroo.

The name didn’t give away the identity of his creation right away, but after looking at its statblock if anyone didn’t realize what it was, well, Dan felt bad for them. Naturally, the boss was a mix of a rooster and a snake, which he had supersized for the extra intimidation factor.

Most of the body was the long and thick body of a snake with greenish scales to match the coloring of the forest. The only thing detracting from the smooth body were two medium-sized wings tucked around halfway up. These wings matched the beautiful plumage of a photogenic rooster. Meaning they had red, yellow, orange, and deep green feathers beautifully intermixed. And naturally, this plumage matched the feathers found at the end of the snake's body where the head would normally be. Except, there was no snakehead there. Instead, it was the head of a rooster.

The rooster's head, albeit larger, was that of a normal rooster. It had beautiful plumage hiding the transition between snake and rooster but still not detracting from its red comb and wattles, which shifted about as the head moved. Out of everything, the oddest thing the head held were its eyes, they were yellow with dark-slitted pupils like that of a snake, and they frankly creeped Dan out.

Moving along from the incredible look of the Dangeroo, which was a mixed name derived from danger noodle and rooster. Dan took a look at the abilities. There wasn’t much to explain since the names were rather self-explanatory. However, Dan couldn’t deny a few abilities did stick out.

Bwak Blast was a sound attack the rooster snake would make as it made a known sound chickens or roosters could make. Flaming Doodle Doo was a combination attack that would start with Wings of Flame. Which would launch the rooster high into the sky before it activated its Flaming Doodle Doo by making the iconic sound roosters were known for as it plummeted down to earth. Finally, the last out-of-place skill was Slither. It could be confusing, but it essentially was what allowed snakes to slither. Rather obvious, but it could be a curve ball for some.

With the boss done, Dan moved to make its minions. As to what these minions would be? Well, it was rather clear it would be a mix between a chicken and a snake, or as Dan called it, a Schike.

Dan didn’t have much to say about Schikes. They were copies of Dangeroo, except less powerful and with less colorful plumage. Instead, each Schike had their own feather coloring which ranged in various browns, greys, blacks, whites, and even light yellow. And, yes, their scaly bodies were the same as Dangeroo’s, except overall, the Schikes were smaller.

Like all other minions Dan had made, the monstrosities wouldn’t be any different, and they would roam around the Beast Lands either alone or with a group of other monsters. This also included a group that would always follow their boss around.

For his next monster, Dan took inspiration from a certain mantis in one of his favorite movies back on Earth. The movie was about a panda that learned kung fu, and in this movie, there was a mantis that could zoom around and beat things up.

Now, this monstrosity was an interesting one because it did not have the body parts of other beasts. Instead, it qualified as a monstrosity due to Dan drastically changing its body.

To begin with, Dan had increased the size of a mantis from tiny to small. Specifically, the mantis’s size ranged from the size of a chihuahua to the size of an average dog. Of course, that wasn’t enough to cause the change in type. What had been enough was what Dan had done next.

He had turned their entire body into metal. And no, it wasn’t like when he gave a monster the Metal Enhancement ability because that was letting them temporarily gain metal traits. This time, Dan had legitimately turned the entire body of the mantis into metal. In a way, it was a scuffed version of a golem, except since he didn’t have any natural golems, it costed more. Still, it worked.

With the body made of metal, Dan continued his creation by giving an ability that made its front limb into sharp blades. Then he literally gave it Spring Legs to make sure it could jump around as he had envisioned. Naturally, at that point, it was officially considered a monstrosity, and Dan gave it the skill that would bring his vision to fruition: Jumping Momentum.

The skill would let the mantis continue to jump faster and faster after it had started, making it a complete menace to deal with. Granted, that wasn’t all the skills Dan gave it since he needed the monster to actually deal damage. However, the rest of the skills were not nearly as important, and he welcomed the Mantislade into his dungeon.

Continuing from his mantis monster, whom he would make a stronger boss version later, Dan looked to the next monstrosity.

With this next creation, Dan wanted to make something that would hunt adventurer's dreams. Though, not literally, that would be left for later when he had more experienced adventurers.

Dan already had in mind the idea for the boss but would leave that for later as well, since he originally envisioned the minion first.

If the name and the ability Head Swivel didn’t give it away, the monster was a mix of an owl and a llama. A llama with the head of an owl, to be exact. The minion, which Dan simply named after the future boss he was going to make, had the head of an owl with big, round eyes. Its head feathers were white, matching the fur of the llama. However, Dan did plan to have these Llowls in different colors. White and grey were the minions, while the black colored ones were Mini-Boss level.

As to what the monster was capable of or what Dan was going for. He wanted a range combatant that would be a stealth nuisance. To that end, there were a number of abilities whose names explained what they did rather well. However, to make sure his creation could really be a pain, Dan had given it Hidden Shadow and Shadow Jump.

Hidden Shadow was designed to help the monster's stealth by making it so it could hide much more easily within the shadows. The ability could darken areas where the minion was, and it passively pulled the shadows toward it while blending them together. From there, the owl llama hybrid could creepily stare at adventurers using its abilities on them until they noticed. Then, once they did notice, it would use its Shadow Jump to try and get away. Emphasis on try since the ability would cost a decent bit of mana otherwise, Dan felt the monster would be too strong.

With the Llowl complete, Dan continued his creation of more monstrosities. As always, the monster spawning part of dungeon creation took the longest. This was added as he still had many more monstrosities to create and spawn. And as he mindlessly spawned creatures, he thought of new monster combinations while also looking forward to the next area he was going to dungeonfy.
