Chapter 2: Welcome To SeRAPH

  Chapter 2: Welcome To SeRAPH

  I

When Junshin entered through the automatic doors, he blinked at the glaring sun through the clear glass windows and stared at the fountain in the middle of the courtyard. Junshin then turned his attention toward Hina, who strutted through the hallways and led him to another area that she wanted him to see in SeRAPH.

“I’ve contacted Reito,” Hina said. “First, you need to do your Entrance Exams.”

“What kind of Entrance Exams are they?” Junshin asked. “Do you know?”

“Everyone has been keeping hush hush about it,” Hina said. “Though they’re confidant that this year’s Entrance Exam would really test a student. I think it’s also part of an experiment that the scientists are testing.”

“An experiment?” Junshin said. “Kind of like what Gin-sensei does, right?”

  Hina nodded.

  Junshin frowned.

“I don’t like the fact that he fed you poison,” Junshin said.

Hina smiled serenely before saying, “No matter what type of poison it is, it most likely wouldn’t kill me. At least, ordinary poison wouldn’t.”

“So you’re risking your life every time that you’re going to Gin-sensei?” Junshin said in alarm.

“Relax, Junshin-kun,” Hina said as she clasped both of his hands within hre own. “I’m fine, right? I’m a Rank 5 Biokinetic. It is not hubris to say that I will survive most things, and continually adapt and evolve to evolutionary changes in my DNA.”

Junshin lowered his head, before saying, “Still,” he whispered.

  Hina smiled.

“It’s nice that you’re concerned about me, but I will be okay. Gin-sensei and I worked out this agreement. Besides, I have a family to take care of. I wouldn’t kill myself or take such risks if I wasn’t sure that I would make it.”

“So why are you in the ANGeLS, Hina?” Junshin asked.

Hina put a finger to her lip, considering it.

“I wanted to help people, of course, but I guess I wanted to give my family easy lives,” she said with an easy smile.

“The ANGeLS do have a lot of good money lined up in their pockets,” Junshin considered. “But becoming a doctor too? That’s incredible.”

“Of course,” Hina said with a smile, lacing her hands behind her back and placing one ankle behind the other. “Family is important, after all. I have two younger sisters to take care of along with my Dad.”

“Ah,” Junshin said, considering her words. “About my brother…”

“Yes,” Hina said. “Kazuki-san wanted his brother to make his debut into SeRAPH Academy by solving a mission that he needs help with. I’m supposed to give you the details, right? I haven’t forgotten.”

Junshin could’ve sweat-dropped like one of those anime characters in the cartoons he saw broadcast on television, though said nothing. However, he listened when Hina began rattling off the agenda.

“So basically,” Hina said. “We need to determine your Rank and specialized ability. That will come in time when Gin-sensei gets the results turned in.”

  Junshin nodded.

“Furthermore,” Hina said while holding up a finger. “Both of your entrance exams will take place with a certain set of rules and conditions in place.”

“What are these rules and conditions?”

Hina ticked them off on her fingers one by one. “First, you can forfeit if it’s more than you can handle on the second exam. It is more than understandable if you do. In fact, it’s probably best that you do.”

  Junshin swallowed.

“What kind of test is the second exam?”

“I don’t know the exact details,” Hina said. “But as said, it’s part of an experiment in the Ability Curriculum. They’re testing and fine-tuning things in all kinds of departments in the school.”

“You seem to know a lot about it,” Junshin said suspiciously, while Hina gave him one of her gentle smiles.

“You’ll see when you get there,” Hina said. “But for now, you can enjoy your time at SeRAPH Academy as you’re introduced to the world of ANGeLS and crime fighting life!”

Junshin looked around, and asked. “What if I fail these entrance exams?”

  Hina looked serene.

“You won’t. I believe in you.”

Junshin remained silent, playing various simulations in his head and possibilities that would run in his mind in various trajectories of various futures that led to unfavorable outcomes. He knew his brother asked for his help, though if he were to be discovered and revealed to SeRAPH, that would probably encourage the scientists in the SeRAPH sector to come after him. He didn’t want to live that kind of life, being a perpetual guinea pig, though living a life of freedom where he didn’t have to stay confined to other people’s expectations of him. It was easy hiding his identity at first, but…

“I see,” Junshin said, before he walked behind Hina and continued to reflect on his place in SeRAPH and what he should do about keeping his abilities and powers hidden while maintaining enough of a streak in his grades to achieve a well balanced life where teachers weren’t breathing down his throat.

“Well, we’re here,” Hina said, as they opened up the doors to the training room and entered inside. “Shizuya-kun! Rika-chan! Kanna-chan! We got a new recruit today.”

“What is this about a new recruit?” Shizuya said, a white-haired pretty boy with crimson red eyes that had a dynamic and slender build. His pale skin seemed smooth and youthful, indicating his white hair wasn’t a sign of age but simply a genetic anomaly. The white haired boy’s body supple with a lithe tension coiled in his body, as though he were a wolf or mad caged dog that would snarl and snap at anyone who would provoke him. Yet despite this, he gravitated toward a black-haired girl and lingered by her side, to which he murmured something softly to her. The girl nodded before they hung back, observing quietly.

“This is who Kazuki-san was talking about, correct?” A black-haired girl with silvery blue eyes watched with a penetrating gaze, her slender and aerodynamic form showing a willowy leanness like that of a waif. The dynamic lines of her body and the unobtrusive muscularity could’ve easily been unnoticed, though Junshin noticed a coiled tension in her form as well that spoke of a power like a caged, graceful panther. Her elfin features poised with grace and athleticism and flexibility that complemented her slender limbs, from her dainty arms which ended in pianist hands and fingers, to taut thighs and sleek calves. Not a single bead of sweat stood out on the pallor of her skin, which contrasted her lustrous black hair. The school uniform hugging her waif-like body gave her a sense of deceptive fragility, though Junshin noted underneath her delicate frame, muscles quivering with tension could erupt with lethal precision and force.

“Ha?!” Junshin noticed a slender girl with red hair in an array of angry spikes jutting from her head. She also sported a slender body and wore shorts that capped her thighs nicely. She didn’t seem to have a bosom to speak of—it was as flat as plywood, though Junshin didn’t necessarily see anything wrong with that. Her cat-like cerulean blue eyes blinked a couple of times, before they narrowed forbiddingly at anyone who caught her in a moment of weakness. Junshin noted the pride in her stance and the tilt of her head as she took a deep breath. “He doens’t look like much. Well? What can you do, rookie?”

Junshin mutely shrugged. He could sense from their abilities and levels that these were call Level 5 calamities gathered in one room. One—The Walking Calamity, Rika Kobayashi, or a Level 5 Infinite Telekinetic User. Shizuya Kawasaki, the Level 5 Gravikinetic User. Kanna Harada, a Level 5 Calokinetic User. He heard about them through Kazuki, but meeting them in the flesh was a different experience than he expected. Junshin cleared his throat, before he bowed his head and said, “My name is Junshin Fujimoto. It’s nice to meet you all. I’ll be in your care from now on.”

“There’s no need to be so formal,” Rika said, putting one hand against her hip and smiling slightly on her normally stoic face. “We’ll be working together so it’s only natural that we’ll be taking care of you.”

“Please,” Shizuya said, rolling his eyes playfully. “Fujimoto hasn’t proven he can keep up yet, can he? What makes you so confident that he’s got what it takes?”

“I know what I know,” Rika said mysteriously, still having that serene small smile on her face, before she said. “So. We’re all the same age but you will be working in the Student Council at SeRAPH. We have request forms in in the inbox for all kinds of missions and also on the website for quests around the city to do things for the people and students, so hopefully you’ll get adjusted to the workload. There’s always many things to do.”

“Thank you,” Junshin said with another bow.

“Ha!” Kanna said with another huff, folding her arms and shifting on one leg to another. “Just don’t bring us down, rookie! We don’t need a deadweight on our team.”

“I assure you, my judgment is good,” Hina said, “And we all have to trust Kazuki-san.”

“But he doesn’t have a specialized Ability Rank,” Kanna complained. “We don’t know his qualifications and history! What makes you think that Kazuki could just plop some rando in our team to do this mission.”

Junshin frowned a bit, though he shook his head, letting the barb slide. They apparently had an already established dynamic and team and history with one another, and Junshin was the outsider intruding in.

“Why is he here anyway?” Kanna said with a sniff. “Did he even pass the entrance exams?”

“Not exactly,” Hina said, to which Hina strutted forward and poked a finger toward Hina’s bounteous chest.

“Y-Y-You let him in here without permission! Damn it, Kihara! That’s what I hate about you! You’re overly lax and whimsical attitude!”

Hina smiled and laughed, before she said. “Kanna-chan may sound angry all the time, but she really has a good heart underneath it all. She’s as committed to crime fighting as the rest of us are.”

“Don’t think you can butter me up,” Kanna said. “I’m no sweet potato.”

“Now that we’re acquainted,” Hina said as she folded her hands together and looked around the room. “We should all have a welcoming party for Junshin-kun after we solve the case. You heard the incident about the train?”

  The others nodded.

“It is a rather mysterious incident that would require further investigation,” Rika said. “We’ve questioned the other train conductors and drivers about any unusual individuals or incidents. We haven’t found anything so far, though if our hunch is correct…”

“It’s definitely a bad guy,” Kanna said with a haughty air. “I can smell em out a mile away.”

“What are you, some kind of dog?” Shizuya said with a scoff, before he grinned a bit. “Anyway, Junshin, right? We got something good for you.”

“What is this something good that you have?” Junshin asked.

“You’ll see,” Hina said with a serene smile as she went to stand in the cloistered circle among her team along with everyone else, with Junshin hemmed in as the center or attention. “Your exams are coming up soon, right? You need to prepare as much as possible.”

“Seems like there’s some downtime before that, though,” Junshin observed, while Hina giggled.

“Of course. What is it that you want to do, Junshin-kun?”

“Not sure,” Junshin said with a shrug. “Though is there an inbox or website for the ANGeLS that someone made, correct? Don’t you think there would be a forum about the incident on there?”

The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there.

“Take a look yourself,” Rika said. “It would be nice to have another pair of eyes over it.”

“Please do,” Junshin said, before Hina went to get the laptop that was sitting on an ovular desk in the office and brought it to Junshin to exam. He scanned through the forums, with people usually fangirling the ANGeLS for their service, though there seemed to be one message in particular that stuck out to Junshin.

“Did you find the message that stuck out, Fujimoto?” Hina said.

Junshin scanned, his eyes stopping on one message that stood out to him, before saying, “We’re going to revolutionize and reform Tokyo from its former soulless self and inspire the fires of nationalism and patriotism into its heart. The ANGeLS are a nuisance to these plans, and consider this our calling card and challenge to you—if you can’t figure out the mystery behind the psychotic breaks, then we will consider your credibility s a false standing and will do everything within our power to destroy the reputation of SeRAPH, the ANGeLS, and the Symbol of Peace.”

“This was issued right after the train incident when you came to school,” Rika noted. “At precisely 9:18 AM. Honestly, one could consider this pretty daft, though not for the reasons that you would expect.”

“Are they that confident in themselves that they will take us down?” Kanna scoffed. “I say bring it.

“It’s not the challenge itself that I find insipid,” Rika said. “But rather…hm. I’m committing this message to memory and trying to ascertain the hidden meanings behind it. It’s a pretty straightforward challenge to inspire us to action, though a criminal’s motive is something is important. Why send this to a young high school group of children? Probably because this is an easily impressionable age where people can be directed into certain trajectories for future heroism or crime.”

“SeRAPH Academy has always been fishing for experimental guinea pigs in their projects,” Shizuya noted. “Yet these criminals or mysterious brotherhood or syndicate of bad guys wanna take advantage of our trade secrets.”

Rika shrugged. “Makes sense. Though the manager of our website has found potential people to uphold the positive public opinion of the ANGeLS and taking on this challenge is something that we can do.”

“Do you think that we can manage?” Hina said. “We have another event coming up that involves the party and everything. Not just Junshin-kun’s celebration, but a ceremony for the medal of Kazuki-san.”

“It’s gonna be a momentous occasion for sure,” Rika said. “Though it would be a perfect time for the criminals to take advantage of such an occasion to do their mayhem.”

“We won’t let them do it,” Kanna said while striking a palm against her fist. “Because the ANGeLS can do anything!”

“That’s right!” Shizuya said as he stomped his foot on top of a desk and put a hand on his chin. “We’re the ANGeLS. We wipe up criminals on the floor and kick ass and take names. Don’t you just wanna go out on an all out brawl with those who would disrupt the peace in our peaceful city?”

“Yes, yes,” Hina said. “I appreciate the enthusiasm, but let’s curb it for the moment. We’re gonna have a special occasion for Junshin set aside while we’re celebrating Kazuki-san’s achievements. Nobody yet knows that Kazuki-sans’ little brother in SeRAPH Academy, though I think that as the Student Council, we will take exceptionally good care of him!”

Kanna pointed a finger toward Junshin, scrunching her face an expression as though it looked like she bit into a lemon, before saying, “Rookie, I haven’t fully accepted you into the team yet! To prove yourself, you have to do menial tasks and jobs from the bottom up to do things of prestige and honor that this school requires! So first—get me some coffee. And brew it JUST the way that I like it.”

“Kanna-chan is a hard worker as always,” Hina said while clasping her hands together. “Though coffee would be nice, Junshin-kun. I’ll guide you to the cafeteria and show you the expensive coffee makers that they have for students.”

“Okay,” Junshin said, following Hina while the rest of the Student Council talked amongst themselves from his departure and Hina showed him to the coffee machine maker.

“You know how to brew a good coffee, right?” Hina said. “I’ll give you a hint about what kind of beans and blend that Kanna-chan likes, if you want. The rest of the team I can give hints towards too, as well.”

Junshin learned about everyone’s favorite blends. Kanna: Colombian Roast. Rika: Mocha Cappucinno. Shizuya: Light Expresso Roast. And Hina: Caramel Latte.Junshin prepared these blends in the coffee machine before he carried all these cups on a tray to the Student Council room where he presented the treats to his superiors, who thanked him for his serivce.

“Hm,” Rika said. “This is quite succulent. I approve.”

“Well, can’t complain if I’m getting free service,” Shizuya said as he took a sip from his own coffee. “Don’t worry, Junshin, you won’t be coffee bitch for long. We will give you tons of things and work to do that are more exciting than this.”

Kanna scrunched her face. “Hmph, just because he can obey and follow orders doesn’t mean…”

She took a sip, her expression softening lightly, before it became acidic again as her coffee. “Hmph!”

Hina smiled, before she said, “You got Kanna’s approval if she doesn’t find something to complain about.”

“I will be in your service,” Junshin said humbly while Rika took another sip of her cappuccino.

“The balance and measure of flavor has been brewed to perfection,” Rika noted. “You have experience as a barista?”

Junshin nodded. “I do some favors here and there.”

Kanna let out a sigh of satisfaction, before she placed her coffee cup on the tray. Her cerulean eyes glazed with fervor as she slammed both hands down on the ovular mahogany table in the center of the Student Council Room, with the wide open-paned windows glancing in sunlight showing a beautiful view of the rose gardens and hedge trimmed bushes outside along with the fountain showing the splendor of SeRAPH’s glory and aesthetic design. The lush carpeting sank underneath their loafers as they walked upon the mossy surface, and there was even lounge seats and sofas in the parlour room like office where they took requests on their website for their missions.

“We better catch this criminal that issued such a challenge to us! We won’t back down!”

“I think we should make preparations first,” Rika said. “Though time is of the essence. What are our thoughts?”

“What I want is that sweet payload,” Shizuya said. “Helping citizens is great and all, but let’s not pretend we don’t do this for the benefits.”

“That’s a shame,” Hina said with some disappointment in her voice. “The citizens in Tokyo should come first rather than our pay raise.”

“Hey, you need money too, dontcha,” Shizuya said with a wave of his hand. “Don’t pretend that you’re completely selfless, Hina.”

“Yes, the money is nice,” Hina said. “Though we all agree that we’ve committed to helping the citizens of Tokyo with our powers. That much we all agreed upon.”

“True,” Shizuya said, before he downed the rest of the contents of his coffee and put his cup on the tray at the ovular table. "Though who knew that sweet, admirable Hina had a lust for money like the rest of us.”

“I have my reasons, you know,” Hina said, while she put her hands on her hips and gave Shizuya a mock glare. “It’s for my family!”

“Yeah, yeah,” Shizuya said while waving a hand lazily. “It’s great you have a nice family to do those things for, but for me, I’m looking out for me. I want the power and freedom rise from my former position and make my way to the top.”

“What do you do the ANGeLS for, Kanna?” Junshin asked.

Kanna folded her arms and let out a scoff.

“Well, obviously to catch crooks and bad guys, but I suppose I want to help my father’s detective work.”

“And you? “Junshin nodded to Rika.

“Mm…” Rika said as she contemplated and finishe the last of her cappuccinno with resplendent toppings of whipped cream and decided to put the empty cup on the table’s center on the tray. “To develop skills and for self-improvement. I want mastery.”

“Really?” Hina said, looking toward Rika. “Weren’t you working another position before that paid really well?”

“It became too comfortable and I didn’t believe that my skills would develop there,” Rika said. “Changing environments into more competitive scenes is more important to develop the mastery and skills that you need to become a better person.”

“Well, true,” Hina said, before she thought about it a bit longer. “Though you worked for your father’s company a bit, didn’t you? How was that?”

“He expects me to become heiress to his company,” Rika said. “Though I wanted to balance a life of ANGeLS work and school and the company standing to improve its public image.”

“So, in order to prepare against this challenge,” Rika said while getting everyone on board with the initial agenda. “We have to analyze the contents of the message. We could easily dismiss this as a prank, though taking things like this seriously is what we must do so as not to strain our credibility if it does turn out to be legitimate. But the way that they’re going about this is…hm, shall I say it…unwieldy.”

“What d’you mean?” Shizuya said. “Stop with your pompous pep talk and make sense, will ya.”

“You perfectly understand what I mean,” Rika said calmly. “I know you better than that, Shizuya. Anyway, they are talking about a revolution and reforming Tokyo from its former ‘soulless’ self. We need to ascertain whether these are ordinary criminals or whether they are Psion criminal behind this challenge or perhaps a mixture of both. We’ve heard incidents of the train hijackings where people lose consciousness while driving trains…perhaps this is connected to that?”

“It is too fishy to be a coincidence,” Shizuya said.

Hina nodded along as she ticked off on her fingers her thoughts.

“So first, there is the train hijacking that happened due to train driver error. Could possibly be a human error due to actual carelessness or something bigger, part of a development from an organized crime ring that is working smoothly and unseen.”

“Right, so these supposed psychotic breaks that are taking precedence in the trains and people in Tokyo,” Rika said. “Is an obvious flag or pattern, the modus operandi, if you will, of how our criminal operates. We don’t know what type of power it is, however. Obvious signs point to a telepath user, though one could be an advanced telekinetic user that uses a variety of possibilities to shut down senses or thoughts, or a biokinetic user that causes a temporary illness or inflammation that makes them lose concentration, or an electricity user that can wipe out thoughts…profiling our criminal is going to take some time, but we can narrow it down by taking the cases of the big known criminals that we have in our books and go one by one in the profile books and start to find them.”

“Did Gin-sensei come back with reports about the dazed train conductors who have been having psychotic breaks?” Hina asked.

Rika shook her head. “He was determining a theory, though he found no foreign substances in their brain or bloodstream, no unusual foods that were digested, no illnesses or previous history of mental complications that would cause them to lapse like this. We can’t yet say that this is the work of a Telepath user, but if it was, he’s a great user of a wide scale with a scope of the likes we haven’t seen. A Level 5 Telepath User, if you will.”

“So if I’m getting this correct,” Junshin said while steepling his hands together and narrowing his eyes as he analyzed the data before him through the round room conference table discussion they were having. “We believe that these psychotic breaks are a Psion user, and the message clearly challenged to the ANGeLS through the website might be the same people connected to those incidents. Did we spot anything on the cameras in the Tokyo subways any unusual movements of people among them?”

“They kept themselves well concealed,” Rika said. “Or perhaps they have a network of people that are operating underneath his command and will. We will, of course, require further investigation, but let’s say it’s a safe assumption that it’s a probable Telepath user that we’re dealing with, and a high level one at that.”

“How many meters do you think he can operate by?” Shizuya said.

“I’m thinking,” Rika said, putting a finger underneath her chin and furrowing her brow slightly. “He has to be from a pretty far distance away if he hasn’t been spotted at the scene of the crime. The disadvantage of being such a powerful Telepath is that he probably has to hear the thoughts of everyone all at once, unless if he’s got a steel trap mind to form mental shields to block other voices except the ones that he wants to hear from a great distance, too. Such an opponent is dangerous and should be stopped.”

“All Psions naturally have the ability to Hear though, right?” Junshin said.

“Well, obviously,” Kanna scoffed. “Though Hearing through Telepathy is a fine-tuned technique that takes practice and training from a young age. One test for Telepathy involves a child picking up on adult concepts that they theoretically shouldn’t understand yet. Another involves empathetic connection that mirrors the person that they’re around on top of people hearing the child or toddler’s ‘voice’ in their head, a sort of presence trying to explore or sense it.”

“Though if Psions all have the natural ability to Hear,” Junshin explained calmly. “Shouldn’t we cast out a Telepathic Net to discover this Telepath master himself? Or would that be too dangerous? There is a possibility that he can wipe our memories of him if we do have contact with him or perhaps blow through our mental shields.”

“That is a possibility,” Rika said as she countered. “Though the possibility of him being a powerful opponent cannot be denied and we must err on the side of caution. Telepaths can be tricky opponents because they can disable the electronics around them and communication devices and satellites in the world if they want to commit a crime, and if this Telepath is on the scale that we think he is…well, let’s called him our theoretical, unnamed Telepath Master.”

“This Telepath master would’ve been caught, wouldn’t he?” Junshin said, folding his hands and considering things through. “This is a modern day society where people densely populate the area. He can’t have such hyperfocus all the time that he blocks out the thoughts of everyone In the world twenty four seven. So there must be some kind off limit to his abilities that prevent him from outright attacking in the open and mocking the ANGeLS for it. There’s a reason why he has to act in secrecy.”

“My thoughts, exactly,” Hina said, before she put a fresh tray of warm cookies on the table. “Sorry, got hungry and decided to get us some snacks! Okay, now that we’ve got some sweets to help us think better, what do you think is the better solution—wait to act until we come up with a plan, act decisively and put an end to the Telepath Master’s actions, or just…I don’t know, I think we need to think of something then just sit around talk. I have a family to think about, you know!”

“Goddamnit!” Kanna said while rolling her eyes. “This is making me groan. It should be obvious but nothing is coming to me! There are so many unknown things that we don’t yet know…but we’re trying to gather evidence from the train conductors and possibly question some locked up Psion criminals who the person could potentially be.”

“I think that should be our next stop,” Rika said. “To the prison cells and talk to the criminals directly. Some of them slip through the cracks and the ANGeLS have naturally kept the streets of Tokyo mostly crime free, though there is a person running loose who might unleash chaos upon us all.”

“I know just the contact that we can go to,” Shizuya said with a smirk, while everyone looked dubiously at Shizuya. “What? I have my connections. I won’t say who it is…but I have my reasons…and I won’t tell you where or how I’ve acquired the info. All I will tell you is…I had to do what I had to do.”

Rika rolled her eyes. “Please, Shizuya. The person you’re talking about is that jackass father of yours.”

“Yeah,” Shizuya said, and his face scrunched at the mention of his father. “Though he did work in the underworld and knows some of the hidden networks in Tokyo that involves criminal routes and illegal wares. He might give us some good info.”

“Well, we’ll interview him after we’ve had our school session,” Rika said. “An education is important, you know.”

“I already know this stuff,” Shizuya complained. “And Rika you’ve probably read the school’s entire library three times over! Do any of us really need to study here? We should be out kicking ass and taking names!”

“The teachers are keeping an eye on us,” Rika said softly. “We’re one of the few students with Level 5 Calamity Rankings. They want to make sure that we don’t go too out of control with our powers.”

“Yeah but still, don’t you wanna let loose, at times?” Shizuya said with a grin, inching closer to Rika’s face as she looked nonimpressed. “Cause a little chaos?”

“I’ve reflected that if I unleashed my powers the entire world be decimated and if it even recovered and there were very few individuals even considered alive from the incident living, it would cause a throwback to cave man civilization without the modern conveniences and technology that we love and appreciate,” Rika said with a prim purse of her lips. “And there is a teacher that can beat all the students at once if they came at him.”

“Who would that be?” Junshin asked, curious about this individual.

“Only one of the best teachers in the school!” Kanna said with unexpected admiration in her eyes. “You’ll know when you see him.”
