Wang Youcai and Yang heard him say this, both were shocked. They were worried about their son's illness, now hearing their son say that the famous doctor was a mediocre doctor, naturally they were all shocked.
Wang Youcai hurriedly said: "Ping'an, how did you know that this prescription is no good? Cheng Shen Yi is the best doctor in Xuzhou!"
Yang didn't care about anything else, in her eyes, whoever could cure her son's illness was a divine doctor, and whoever couldn't was a mediocre doctor. This was the only standard, everything else was nonsense! She huffed and said: "I knew that guy with the surname Cheng was a swindler from the start, your brother said he was a mediocre doctor, so he is a mediocre doctor. Don't worry, son, next time we won't look for him, mom will find a divine woman to perform some rituals, and let Danru marry you, it'll be a lucky coincidence, and your illness will be cured!"
Wang Ping'an remembered that he indeed had a young adopted daughter-in-law named Ding Danruo, who was specifically kept for him to marry in case of bad luck. Yang's mother cared about her son and feared nothing but his illness being incurable, so she thought of all sorts of methods. To prevent other families from being unwilling to marry their daughters to a sickly man, they simply found an orphan girl and raised her from childhood as a child bride, just for the purpose of marrying her off at a critical moment to ward off bad luck.
It seems that my mother in this life is a loyal supporter of the beautiful girl raising system, and even prepared a child bride for me to rush into marriage!
"He shook his head and said: 'No need to go through so much trouble. I'll come up with another prescription, take the medicine according to it, and in a few days, my illness will be completely cured. I'll dictate it orally, and Father can record it!'"
Wang Youcai felt a strange sensation in his heart, and he couldn't help but stroke his beard. Accidentally, he plucked out a few hairs, which pained him so much that he grimaced. He asked, "Ping'an, can you write a prescription? This prescription isn't something to be written carelessly, taking the wrong medicine could...could be inauspicious!" He originally wanted to say it could be fatal, but the word 'death' was unlucky, so he changed it to 'inauspicious'.
Wang Ping felt at ease, thinking that his father was right. The former Wang Ping was at most a bookworm, who had read the Four Books and Five Classics many times, but had hardly studied medicine, so it was suspicious for him to claim he could write prescriptions.
He said, "I saw it in a medical book. There are too many books in the study, and I couldn't remember which one it was for the time being, but the prescription I remembered clearly." Seeing that Wang Youcai still had a hesitant expression, he turned his head to Yang and said, "Mother, do you believe in your son's memory? Your son has a good memory!"
Yang nodded immediately and said, "Of course mother can trust me, my memory is the best!" As for why her son couldn't even remember the title of this book but remembered the prescription, she didn't think of it.
Wang Youcai was a gentle and easy-going person, not one to be overly serious. When he heard what Yang said, he spread out paper on the table, picked up his pen, and prepared to write down the prescription.
Wang Pingan said: "Four qian of poppy shell..."
Wang Youcai exclaimed, his pen hovering in mid-air unable to fall. He hadn't heard what Wang Ping'an said after that, and it wasn't until Wang Ping'an finished reciting the prescription that he asked with a flushed face: "Ping'an, what is '罂粟壳', how do you write the first two characters?"
Wang Ping'an was taken aback, thinking to himself: "Could it be that Tang Shi doesn't know about opium? No, that can't be right. As a poison, opium is an evil thing of later generations, and people at this time wouldn't know about it, but as a medicinal herb, it's been used for a very long time, so he should know about it!"
He hastily said: "The poppy shell is the shell of the opium poppy." Seeing that Wang Youcai was still bewildered, he added: "It's also called 'imperial rice'!" This is another name for the poppy.
Wang Youcai was still unaware, but Yang said: "The imperial rice is the rice eaten by the emperor, this is not difficult to ask for, I will send someone to Chang'an, spend money and ask someone to get a few stones back for you, let my son eat as much as he wants."
Wang Ping'an smiled and said, "Mother misunderstood, the imperial rice is a kind of medicine, also known as poppy or rice bag, it's also called pouch!" He then mentioned two other names for poppy.
Wang Youcai still didn't understand, sighed and said: "Son, it seems that your prescription is indeed a good one. The medicine you used is something I've never heard of before. I just don't know if the pharmacies in town have this kind of medicine."
Wang Ping's scalp tightened, and he said, "This medicine is also called Xianggu by some people!" If he hadn't heard of this name again, then he would have been out of luck, and could only change the prescription.
The two characters "Xiang Gu" came out of the mouth, Wang Youcai exclaimed with joy, a happy expression appeared on his face. Wang Ping'an's heart relaxed, it seemed that the Tang Dynasty people called the medicine "Xiang Gu", and now there was indeed this kind of medicine. Just then, Wang Youcai said: "These two characters, I can write!" After being puzzled for half a day, he showed joy not because he had heard of this medicine before, but because he could write these two characters.
Wang Ping thought to himself, "It seems that the two old men really don't understand medicine at all. Well, it's also true that if they really understood, I wouldn't have been sick for so long." He then recited the rest of the medicinal ingredients again, which were ordinary and included mountain yam, Qinpi, dry ginger, diyu, whitehead onion, pomegranate peel, etc.
Finally, Wang Ping said: "Father, when you send someone to fetch the medicine, tell the pharmacist that this prescription is an imitation of Peach Blossom Decoction and is a tonic astringent, so when decocting the medicine, use the method for decocting Peach Blossom Decoction. Don't get this wrong."
Wang Youcai nodded and said, "I'll go to the city myself to fetch the medicine, and then invite a pharmacist from the pharmacy back home. Let him decoct the medicine according to the prescription, and we'll let him do it however he wants!" As he spoke, he blew dry the ink marks on the prescription and put it in his pocket, preparing to go to the city to fetch the medicine himself.
"Wang Pingan said: 'Father, why don't you send someone instead? Why must you go into the city yourself?'"
Wang Youcai turned back and said, "Others may not be trusted to deliver the message, I'd better go myself. Take good care of your illness, Ping'an." After speaking, he left the study, called for his servants to prepare the carriage, and headed into the city.
Seeing her husband leave, Yang gently stroked Wang Ping'an's hair, letting him lie down again, and tucked the quilt corner for him. "My son has said so many words, he must be tired, take a rest. What do you want to eat, mother will ask the kitchen to make it?"
This father and mother are so concerned about themselves, Wang Ping's heart is moved, but this life's body is chronically ill and cannot be cured. After saying just a few words, he feels tired. He said: "Mother takes care of her son, these days are sleepless and restless, naturally more tired, mother also returns to the room to rest, don't get exhausted because of your son's illness."
Yang had been taking care of Wang Ping'an for days, and it was true that she didn't take off her clothes or leave his side even for a moment. Now seeing her son's condition improve slightly, she comforted herself with words, and as a mother, her heart was filled with joy, which couldn't be described in words. She felt that these difficult days were all worth it. She patted Wang Ping'an's quilt again, reminded him of something, and then went back to her room to rest.
Wang Ping'an was indeed tired, closing his eyes to sleep for a while, but in a daze, he seemed to be sleeping but not really sleeping. This is one of the manifestations of chronic illness. Fortunately, there were no nightmares, otherwise it would have been even more unbearable. In the midst of this half-sleeping state, he heard faint footsteps coming from inside the room, and someone had quietly approached his bedside.
Wang Ping An softly hummed, thinking to himself: "Mother isn't reassured about me and has come back?" He slowly opened his eyes, turned his head, but saw that the person standing in front of the bed wasn't his mother Yang Shi, but a 14 or 15 year old girl.
The girl had a slender figure, with black hair cascading down like a waterfall, her face was fair and delicate, looking very pretty. She wore a dress with a corset, but it also had some small ornaments that the corset didn't have. The girl was gazing at herself with beautiful almond-shaped eyes.
Memories of past lives were stirred up, and Wang Ping'an said softly: "It's Dan Ruo."
