Chapter 23 Making Friends

Aiding brought two horse-drawn carriages, one of which he and Cheng Jisheng rode in, while the other was packed with gifts. The two carriages went out of Xuzhou City, one after the other, and arrived at Wulicun Village.

Today, Yang didn't block the entrance, Wang Ping'an told her that it wasn't necessary, treating people's illnesses wouldn't take up too much of his time. If she was worried about delaying his studies, then why not just put up a sign at the entrance that said: "One day, no more than three." Only treat three patients a day, this way he could both cure illnesses and save lives without delaying his studies.

Yang thought it was a good idea, so he really found the village carpenter to make a wooden sign with words written on it and set it up at his own door. Unfortunately, Wang Ping'an's reputation had already spread last night, but in the city, no one around Wulicun knew about it, so no one came to ask for medical treatment yet.

Aiyiti and Chengji got off at the door, after being reported by someone, they entered the living room. Wang Youcai personally accompanied the guests. He heard that Aiyiti had really cured Hamiti's strange illness. Wang Youcai was greatly surprised. Yesterday, he and Yang thought the same way, thinking that his son didn't want Hamiti to die in his own home, so he cheated him out!

As a result, Aiyin and Chengji came to the door at the same time today, which made him both surprised and delighted, with a hint of doubt. His son recited the Four Books and Five Classics, but his learning didn't seem to have improved much. How could he learn medicine on his own and become so skilled that even the number one doctor in Xuzhou was willing to admit defeat? Was it possible that the Wang family would really produce a divine doctor?

Apart from the usual pleasantries, Wang Youcai took the two to the study to see Wang Ping'an. Wang Ping'an was doing nothing else, still reading as usual.

With a book in his hand, Wang Ping'an furrowed his brow. As for reciting books, he wasn't afraid, the former young master had left him with a bellyful of classical Chinese texts. But then again, just being able to recite wasn't enough, many of the meanings in the books he didn't understand. It seemed that he really needed to invite a tutor or find a school, relying solely on himself was absolutely not going to work.

He was worried, when he suddenly saw his father bring in Aiyidin and Cheng Jisheng. He put down the book and came out of the study, smiling: "You two have come today, is it to tell me that Hamiti's illness has improved?" He didn't hold Hamiti's wealthy merchant status in high regard, so he naturally wouldn't call him Old Master Ha.

Aiydin smiled and patted his chest, saying: "My brother-in-law's illness is completely cured. It's just that since my nephew was born, he has been ill. My sister was so frightened that he had to stay at home to comfort her, so he can only come tomorrow to thank the peaceful doctor. We couldn't wait, so I came first!"

Wang Youcai said from behind: "Alas, since you've come, just come then. And yet you brought many gifts, this is too embarrassing. When it's time to leave, Master Ah will take them back!"

"A small gift is not worth mentioning, Master Wang is too polite." Ah-yin said with a smile.

They exchanged pleasantries here, but Cheng Jisheng couldn't help it. After the formalities, he asked eagerly: "Ping'an Shenyi..."

"Mr. Cheng told me to take care of myself, you are older than me by a generation!" Wang Ping'an knew that Cheng Jizhong was a good person, so he intentionally made friends with him and spoke politely.

Cheng Ji Sheng nodded and said, "Alright, I'll just have to rely on my old age then. Ping An, yesterday you used the method of using fear to overcome joy to treat Ha Lao Ye's illness, this is quite a risky move! What if something unexpected happened and he ended up getting scared to death? How would that be good? Is there any precedent for this illness?"

Wang Ping was secretly amused. If Cheng Jishi were born over a thousand years later, in the Qing dynasty, he would have known how to treat this illness even if he weren't a doctor. The story of Fan Jin's success in the imperial examination is very famous; not only did doctors know how to treat it, but even rural butchers could slap Hamiti back into shape with one palm!

He said: "Nature will not go beyond the expected, and of course there are precedents. If there were no precedents, how would I, a dead bookworm, know?!" He paused for a moment, then said: "I just forgot which book I saw it in!"

Wang Ping'an now seems to have figured it out, he is indeed different from the previous young master Wang, at least in terms of medical skills. If he tries to explain, first, it's hard to make clear, second, it's too troublesome, so it's better to just push it onto the books, saying that he saw it in a book, and then forgot which one, anyway, with his large collection of books, searching through them one by one would take several days just looking at the titles.

If someone really wants to investigate, he will go to Yang's house to complain that the person is affecting his studies. Yang will definitely use a broom to drive that person away. As for Old Lady Yang, whether my son can practice medicine or not is none of your business, you're just meddling in other people's affairs because you have nothing better to do! And she herself would never go to investigate the books, even looking at the account books gives her a headache.

Cheng Ji swallowed hard, his mind racing with thoughts that were difficult to express. As a doctor, every renowned medical family had their own secret recipes or unique insights into the use of certain formulas. These secrets and insights were never shared outside the family, not even with their own daughters, only passed down to their sons. So although he desperately wanted to know what good medical books the Wang family possessed, he just couldn't bring himself to ask!

Cheng Ji thought to himself: "Why not just make him my master, that way he'll let me see those medical books and won't keep saying 'I forgot' every time I ask. But I'm several decades older than him, even if I wanted to be his apprentice, he probably wouldn't accept me!"

Looking at his hesitant appearance, Wang Ping was amused in her heart. It seems that this famous doctor who shook Xuzhou really believed that I had a rare medical book! However, thinking about it also makes sense. If I didn't have the medical book, it would be hard to explain why those patients I treated these past few days recovered!

Cheng Jisheng thought for half a day before saying, "Ping'an, I know your studies are heavy and you have to prepare for the imperial examination. Although I'm not much help with medicine, I do have some experience with taking exams. If you're willing, I can... we can discuss it!" He had originally wanted to say "I'll guide you", but thought better of it and changed his words at the last minute to "discuss".

Wang Ping'an's eyes lit up when he heard this, and he was in need of help in this area at the moment. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone to Xiangtong Academy to explore the way, but ended up not even entering the door.

He hadn't finished speaking, when Wang Youcai jumped in ahead of him, happily saying: "That's really thanks to the great doctor! To be honest with you, I recently mentioned this matter to Ping'an's mother, thinking of finding a school in the city to send Ping'an to study. But his mother was reluctant, always saying that she would wait for some time before sending him, and as a result, it kept being delayed until now. If the great doctor can help Ping'an out, I really must thank you sincerely!" His tone was much more polite than before.

Cheng Ji smiled bitterly and said, "It's just experience, can't really be considered as helping. As for medical skills, I'm afraid I won't be of much help, but I do remember the questions from back then."

Wang Youcai, upon hearing that he remembered the topic of the imperial examination, hastily said: "Please sit down and speak slowly, I'll have someone bring tea right away." He turned around and walked to the door, instructing his servant to start cooking immediately, as he would be hosting a guest at noon.

Cheng Jisheng didn't stand on ceremony, sitting down opposite Wang Ping'an and starting to talk. Ah Yiding was also very interested in medical techniques at the moment, seeing the two of them discussing professional knowledge, and not letting himself withdraw, he also sat down, listening in and broadening his horizons.

"I remember that initially there was a question, which used the modified small green dragon decoction to treat chest tightness, whooping cough and eye diseases. This one question actually covered internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology, and it was still the simplest question!" As soon as he mentioned the imperial examination of his time, the old doctor suddenly had a lot to say.

Wang Ping'an was shocked and exclaimed, "What? The imperial examination is actually testing medicinal prescriptions?!" Although he didn't know much about the imperial examination, he knew that during the Tang Dynasty, it didn't test the eight-legged essay, but definitely tested poetry and books, and would never test medicinal prescriptions! If they were going to test medicinal prescriptions, wouldn't he get the top honors easily, and why worry so much?!

Cheng Ji Sheng was also surprised, stroking his beard and asking in return: "Of course we have to test the prescription, if not this, then what else?"
