Wu Li Village. Yang sat in the study, packing things for Wang Ping'an, while Wang Ping'an was staring blankly at a wooden box the size of a dressing case.
Yang said: "Son, you're going to the academy tomorrow to study, and you must be fully prepared. That's the Xiangtong Academy, the best place to study in Xuzhou, where all the famous scholars are, every one of them is a celestial being descended from the heavens." She took a glance at Wang Ping'an and smiled: "Ping'an, you really bring honor to our old Wang family, when I mention this to others, they're all so envious!"
"Wang Ping'an came to his senses and said, 'Mother, you don't need to pack anything for me. I'm just going there to study during the day and will return at night, so I won't be staying overnight. There's no need to bring luggage, what's there to pack?'"
"Make sure to pack everything you need for tomorrow, so as not to make a mistake and become a laughing stock. Yes, the carriage should be prepared too, and have Danruo and Lianwu accompany you!" said Yang.
Wang Ping'an smiled slightly. His mother liked doing these things, so be it. He shifted his gaze back to the wooden box and reached inside to take out a small ceramic jar.
This is a set of ceramic small pots, which are commonly known as fire jars in modern times. This set of fire jars was given to him by the refugees from other places because he cured their illnesses, and the refugees had no money to thank him during the difficult times, so a family gave this extremely precious set of fire jars to him.
This set of fire jars was originally a family heirloom, Wang Ping'an didn't want to accept it, but the other party insisted on giving it to him, he could only keep it, but still sent that household some money, considering it as buying it.
In modern times, fire cupping is a very common Chinese medical treatment, simple to operate and convenient to perform. Fire cupping appeared in the Jin Dynasty, when it used horns of cattle and sheep, so it was also called horn method. In the Jin Dynasty doctor Ge Hong's book "Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve", there are records of the horn method.
By the Sui and Tang dynasties, people began to use bamboo fire jars for treatment. Because bamboo is cheap, this method of treatment started to spread widely, commonly known as a fire jar. However, few people used ceramic jars, first because the production requirements were high and expensive, secondly because transportation was not developed at that time, it was easy to break the ceramic jar, inconvenient to carry, so only a small number of aristocratic families would use them.
The ceramic pot in front of Wang Ping'an was a very delicate, exquisite fire pot that could be called a work of art! He put the fire pot into the box and thought to himself: "Great, now I have another treatment method!"
Yang took out his clothes one by one, compared them one by one, and picked out the best set to put on his bed. Before leaving, he specially instructed him to get up early, and Wang Ping'an naturally agreed.
The next morning, the Wang family's large courtyard was bustling with activity. From top to bottom, everyone in the household was busy shouting and rushing about, all making preparations for Wang Ping'an's first day of school. It was unclear what they were all doing, but everyone had something to do!
Wang Ping'an had finished his breakfast and, under the strong request of Yang's family, he could only bring two little maidservants with him, got on a horse-drawn carriage, and headed to Xiangtong Academy.
Wang Youcai and Yang saw him off together, watching the distant carriage, Yang said: "The son has made a good start, entered a famous academy to study, previously didn't dare to think about it, just hoping he doesn't get sick is good!"
Wang Youcai smiled and said: "Isn't this a great turn of events? Not only did he recover from his illness, but he also became a doctor himself." The old couple sighed in amazement before returning to the hospital.
Wang Ping'an arrived at Xiangtong Academy by carriage. As soon as the door opened, he got out first. This time, the old gatekeeper didn't dare to stop him and hurriedly stood up to greet him, saying many polite words.
Ding Danruo first got off the carriage, turned around and picked up a large round wooden box. This box was filled with a set of exquisite toiletries, including towels, combs, small mirrors, and even a small washbasin!
After she got off the car, it was Ke Lianwu. The little girl with blonde hair and green eyes didn't look easy either. In her left hand, she held a box containing books, pens, ink, and a stove with good sandalwood incense. Her right hand also held another box, which contained various snacks, fruits, and tea leaves. Yang's wife was afraid that her son would lose out, so she brought everything she could think of for him.
The old servant looked at him in a daze, thinking: "This young master doesn't seem to be here to study, his demeanor is too grand, and he's even brought two maids with him!"
Wang Ping sighed in his heart, feeling that the swagger was indeed a bit too much, and he couldn't help but feel a little ashamed. However, looking around at the many wealthy young men in the academy, he thought to himself that he shouldn't be considered anything special after all.
Just as he was about to enter the door, he suddenly heard the sound of horseshoes and someone called out: "Ah, isn't this Brother Wang? What a coincidence, we meet again!" A man came riding up on horseback.
Wang Ping'an turned around to take a look, and it was actually the person who had run over that night to ask him questions, seemingly named Zhao Bi. He quickly cupped his hands together and said: "So it's Brother Zhao, haven't seen you for days, your demeanor is still the same!"
Zhao Bi jumped down from his horse, walked up to him, and warmly shook hands with Wang Ping'an. "Brother Wang, you're going into the academy to find someone, but I don't know who it is," he asked. "The people inside are all familiar to me, little brother can take you to find them!" Although he was several years older than Wang Ping'an, he still called him "brother Wang" and referred to himself as "little brother".
Wang Ping'an smiled and said: "I'm not here to look for someone, but to read books. I plan to take the exam next year, and from then on, we'll be fellow students!"
Zhao Bi was taken aback, looked up and down at Wang Ping'an, then glanced at the two little maids behind him, and after a moment of stunned silence, suddenly gave a thumbs up and said: "Brother Wang is really stylish, our academy has many students, but if we talk about momentum, Brother Wang should be the first, you deserve it!"
Wang Ping An let out a wry smile and said: "This was arranged by Mother, I'm also helpless!"
The two entered the academy together, Wang Ping'an went to find Qiu Wenpu, while Zhao Bi directly went to the lecture hall.
Before Wang Ping'an had crossed the backyard, Qiu Tingxuan came to meet him. Seeing Wang Ping'an, Qiu Tingxuan felt a bit awkward. The other day, Father had said too much, and as a result, he hadn't gotten the apprentice quota from the governor's hands, and now he had to go again for the second time. He didn't know how to explain this to Wang Ping'an.
Wang Ping'an naturally wouldn't ask on his own initiative, but only asked where the medical department's lecture hall was. Qiu Tingxuan saw that he didn't ask and felt slightly relieved. He said: "Our academy has exams for various departments, but some departments have too few students, so they are all combined into the imperial examination department. Everyone reads in the same lecture hall. I'll take you there!" And led Wang Ping'an to the imperial examination department's lecture hall.
The Proclamation Hall of Xiangtang Academy is the second largest, and the largest one is the Mingjing Hall.
Qiu Tingxuan led him into the study hall, where the students were originally muttering to themselves as they recited their books. Suddenly seeing them arrive, they all turned their heads and immediately recognized Wang Ping'an. Isn't this the guy who was spouting nonsense in the garden that night? He deceived us so badly, what is he doing here today? What does he want to do now?!
Zhao Bi was also in the study hall, and he said: "Ah, Wang brother, you're also taking the imperial examination!" Next to him stood up another person, who turned out to be Lu Xiuzhi. These two young masters sat at the same table, not only were they classmates, but also desk mates!
Wang Ping'an nodded with a smile and greeted them.
Qiu Tingxuan led him to a table by the window and said, "This is my seat. I won't be coming to class from today on, so you can sit here and review on your own!"
"Thank you, Brother Qiu!" Wang Ping'an thanked him and looked around, seeing that although the study hall was large, there were nearly a hundred people sitting inside. The desks used by the students were extremely large, and three or four people could sit at them without any problem. However, they were not for individual use, but rather each table had two people, except for this one desk, which was for one person only. It seemed to be Qiu Tingxuan's privilege.
Actually, he misunderstood. The students in the academy could afford to use a desk, but two people sharing one desk was meant to foster friendship. People like Zhao Bi and Lu Xiu were of the same kind, both belonging to the wealthy class. They sat together reading books, their relationship became intimate, and after leaving school, they would take care of each other. Using a single desk alone was not good, without close friends. Qiu Tingxuan looked down on everyone, and as a senior fellow student, no one dared to share a desk with him, and he didn't need to either.
Qiu Tingxuan made arrangements and was about to leave. Before leaving, he said: "Wang Xiongdi, next time you come to the academy, don't dress like this!" After speaking, he walked out of the hall.
Wang Ping'an smiled awkwardly at Zhao Bi and Lu Xiu, just about to sit down, when two little maidservants said: "Young master, please wait a moment, we'll tidy up before you take your seat!"
Two little girls were busy for a while, and Wang Pingan sat down. Ding Danru said again: "Young master, I'll go get you some hot water to make tea!" Under the gaze of all the students in the room, the little girl stepped out with small steps.
Wang Pingan felt quite uneasy, he was not used to being stared at by others, lowered his head and pretended to tidy up the books, not daring to raise his head.
After a moment, footsteps sounded outside the house, and an old man came in. This old man was the teacher, and he would be teaching this lesson!
As soon as his foot stepped into the house, the old man was taken aback. On the desk under the window that originally belonged to the son of the mountain owner, a small incense burner was placed, with swirling incense smoke, burning high-quality sandalwood incense.
Looking further back at the table, I saw a young man sitting upright behind the table, wearing an ivory crown on his head. The crown was white and greasy, with a large red gemstone inlaid on top. Looking down at his body, this young man wore a deep blue brocade robe, with golden peonies embroidered on the collar. When the sunlight shone on it, the gold light was dazzling, obviously made of golden thread, extremely luxurious!
Looking further behind the young man, there was actually a Hu girl standing guard. The girl had golden hair and green eyes, with a light gauze draped over her shoulders, wearing gold earrings and a bright moon pearl around her neck. Her bright red brocade dress was embroidered with a hundred spirit birds, whose eyes shone brightly with a green gemstone! On the Hu girl's wrist was a jade bracelet, and in her hand she held a pale green... handkerchief!
This lavishly dressed young lady is actually just a maid!
The old man was at a loss, this student should be new here, looking like he's not a young prince, but a young duke, or at least a young marquis! Our academy has a big reputation, but it's not possible for the sons of dukes and princes to come here to study. People with such identities either attend Guozijian in the capital or read at Simen Academy locally, how could they possibly come to our Xiangtong Academy?!
The old man was in a daze, when suddenly someone spoke from behind him: "Hey, excuse me!" He turned his head to look and his eyes lit up again, seeing that it was another little girl dressed entirely in silk, only the one inside wore bright red, while this one wore light yellow.
The girl carried a water jug and smiled at him, saying "Good morning, sir!" in a crisp voice.
The old man nodded twice and said hastily: "Early, early, you're also early!" Seeing the girl lightly stepped to the young man's table, pouring water and brewing tea!
The old master let out a cold snort, could it be that this was really the young master of some noble family, coming to my academy to borrow books? Alas, I cannot wait for him to come and pay his respects to me, I must go and pay my respects to him first!
