Chapter 1: Crossed Over

"Whats wrong with me? Where am I?"

In a dilapidated and drafty thatched hut, Yang Chengye opened his eyes and looked around.

I was clearly drinking in a bar, but I dont know who hit me on the head, and then I didnt know anything. How did I wake up here after falling asleep?

With confusion, Yang Chengye tried hard to recall.

Suddenly, a surge of memories flooded in like a tidal wave, causing Yang Chengyes head to ache as if it were about to split open, and he involuntarily let out a moan.

It wasnt until much later that Yang Chengyes headache finally subsided and he gradually calmed down.

At this time, Yang Chengye finally acknowledged a fact, that is, he had crossed over, and it was into the body of someone with the same name and surname as himself.

Although Yang Chengye had never watched "Through the Years", he had seen many things about it online, and did not expect such a melodramatic plot to happen to himself.

Yang Chengye, also known as Ji Zongzu, was a descendant of the famous Yang family generals of the Northern Song Dynasty, but later his family declined.

After the imperial court moved south, Yang Chengyes father Yang Zaixing was down and out and joined the bandit Cao Cheng.

Later, Southern Song general Yue Fei attacked Cao Cheng and was defeated by Yang Zaixing, who also killed Yue Feis younger brother.

Yang Zaixing was captured by Yue Fei and surrendered to the Yue family army, becoming a famous anti-Jin general of Southern Song. He died in battle against the Jin army at Xiao Shanghe, pierced by countless arrows, with no remains left.

After Yang Zaixings death, his eldest son Yang Jizhou continued to serve in the Yue Family Army. Later, he fell into a pit during a battle and was shot dead by the Jin army with random arrows. Yang Chengye was the second son of Yang Zaixing.

Yang Zai Xings wife was named Wu Ruo Lan, who was the blind woman in front of Yang Cheng Ye. After losing her husband and son, she cried until she became blind.

After Yang Zai Xing and his son died, the Yang family declined again. Now there are only two people left in the Yang family: Yang Cheng Ye and his blind old mother.

After learning about Yang Chengyes background, Yang Chengye was suddenly filled with emotion. Its really a case of same name, different fate! He himself is a new youth of the 21st century, graduating from university and entering the public security department to become a forensic doctor.

But how did Yang Chengyes fate become so miserable, his father and brother died when he was eight years old, his mother cried blind, the two depended on each other for survival, begging along the street, drifting to Jiaxing.

Yang Chengye is now a fourteen-year-old boy. Due to long-term malnutrition, he looks relatively thin and weak, with a pale complexion.

  Squeak

The creaky door was pushed open, startling Yang Chengye, who was about to get up, but suddenly felt a sharp pain all over his body, as if he were going to fall apart.

  "Child, have you woken up?"

A blind woman with a coarse cloth dress and hair tied up in a bun, with white temples, walked in carrying a large bowl.

Yang Chengye threw aside his complicated thoughts and asked: "Mother, what year is it now?"

Upon hearing this, Wu Ruolan was suddenly shocked and grabbed Yang Chengyes hand with both hands, asking: "Child, have you gone mad? It is now the eighth year of the Shaoxing era."

Yang Chengye patted Wu Ruolans thin hand and said: "Mother, Im not stupid. I just want to participate in this years imperial examination."

Yang Chengye thought that since he had already crossed over, he would resign himself to his fate. With the knowledge of several thousand years that he possessed, wouldnt he be like a fish in water in this ancient Song Dynasty?

Since heaven has brought me back to the Song Dynasty, I should make a big splash and make my own way, maybe even carve out my own territory.

The Song Dynasty was a dynasty that valued literature over military affairs. To get ahead, one had to enter the imperial court as an official and rely on their own expertise to stand out.

When Yang Chengye heard that he was going to take the imperial examination, Wu Ruolan burst into tears: "Child, you finally understand!"

"Before, you always wanted to learn Yang Family Spear and avenge your father and brother, now..."

Yang Chengye touched his forehead and said: "This, this...".

Wu Ruolan smiled and said: "Mother understands, its good that you understand. Your father used to say when he was alive that your body is too weak, not suitable for martial arts, and must focus on literature."

After a pause, Wu Ruo Lan suddenly exclaimed and said: "Wang Bo sent a chicken, saying it was for you to nourish your body. Mother has already cooked the chicken soup and will bring it over."

Wu Ruolan finished speaking and then felt her way out of bed, leaving the room.

Seeing Wu Ruolans fumbling, Yang Chengye couldnt bear it and wanted to get up himself, but as soon as he moved, the pain swept through his whole body again, and he let out a miserable cry and lay back down.

Yang Chengye lay in bed thinking repeatedly about which way he should go next.

Yang Chengye was injured just because he wanted to avenge Wang Bos injustice.

On that day, Yang Chengye took Wu Ruolans woven hat to the market for sale. He saw several rascals drinking Wang Bos tea without paying and smashing Wang Bos tea stall.

In a fit of anger, Yang Chengye stepped forward to help, but unexpectedly was beaten by those rascals until he was on the verge of death.

Time was not long, Wu Ruo Lan walked in with a bowl of chicken soup and said: "Wang Bo said that you were injured all because of him, let you take good care of yourself, he will send grain every day during this period."

Looking at Wu Ruolans pale face, Yang Chengye felt a dull ache in his heart, probably because he had merged with the memories of that Yang Chengye.

Wu Ruolan brought the chicken soup to Yang Chengyes mouth and said, "Drink quickly, son, and get better soon."

Yang Chengye choked and said: "Mother, you drink first!"

Wu Ruo Lan shook her head and smiled: "Mother is not hungry, you have injuries on your body, it should be you who drinks."

  "Alright then."

Yang Chengye said: "Well go halves, otherwise I wont drink."

  "Good good good, cheers!"

Wu Ruolan smiled and took a sip, then handed it back to Yang Chengye.

A bowl of chicken soup was finished after nearly half an hour of pushing and yielding between the mother and son.

Like this, Yang Chengye lay in bed for seven days and recovered under Wu Ruolans quiet care.

When Yang Chengye walked out of their dilapidated thatched cottage, what entered his eyes was desolation everywhere, withered fields and dense weeds.

Yang Chengyes home was on a small hillside, with no shelter around, and a small stream flowed slowly from the foot of the mountain.

  "Where are you going, Grandfather?"

Just as Yang Chengye was looking around at his surroundings, Wu Ruolan called out his name in the small courtyard.

"Ill go take a look at Wang Bo, these days Wang Bo has sent over a lot of grain, it wouldnt be right if I didnt go see him."

When Yang Chengye said this, Wu Ruolan smiled with relief. Her child had finally grown up and understood things.

Yang Chengye walked along the winding small road, left the small hillside, and walked nearly ten miles before finally seeing a small market.

There are over a hundred households living in this small market town, although its a bit remote, but it has already taken shape.

Yang Chengye looked at the market, and various memories flooded his mind again. He had been to this market before, and it felt somewhat familiar.

Relying on his memory, Yang Chengye walked through the not-so-bustling streets towards Wang Bos home.

Suddenly, Yang Chengye heard the sound of fierce quarrels and pedestrians discussions.
