Chapter 29: Breaking Point

The silence in Amaka's dimly lit apartment was deafening. She sat at the edge of her bed, staring at the pistol in her hand. Her reflection in the cracked mirror on the wall looked foreign to her—wild, desperate, and broken. She had lost count of the nights she spent consumed by thoughts of Jidenna and Adanna. Every failed plot, every moment they escaped her grasp, fed the growing storm of rage inside her.

"This ends tonight," she muttered to herself, her voice trembling. She reached into her duffel bag and checked the weapon again, ensuring it was loaded. Her hands trembled slightly, but she gritted her teeth and steeled her resolve.

Amaka had studied Jidenna's routines, his security measures, and every detail of his home. Tonight, she found her opening. Disguising herself earlier as part of a food delivery service, she had infiltrated the heavily guarded estate unnoticed. Now, she waited for the perfect moment to strike.

Inside the living room of Jidenna's Lagos mansion, soft music played in the background. Jidenna and Adanna sat together on the plush couch, laughing over a story Adanna had just shared. The warm glow of the chandelier bathed the room in a golden hue, a picture of bliss and comfort.

"I'm glad we took that trip," Jidenna said, sipping from his glass of wine. "It felt like a reset for both of us."

Adanna smiled, her fingers laced with his. "Me too. But there's nothing like being back home. It's safe here."

Her words hung in the air as the door to the living room burst open.

Amaka stood in the doorway, disheveled and wild-eyed, clutching a pistol in her hand. Her chest heaved with erratic breaths, and her gaze darted between Jidenna and Adanna.

"Amaka?" Jidenna's voice was a mix of shock and anger as he jumped to his feet. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Adanna froze, instinctively stepping behind Jidenna. Her heart raced as she saw the gun in Amaka's hand.

Amaka's lips curled into a bitter smile. "Well, well. Isn't this cozy? The perfect little couple." Her voice dripped with venom. "Did you think you could just erase me from your life, Jidenna? Did you think I'd just disappear?"

"This is insane," Jidenna said, raising his hands slightly in a calming gesture. "Put the gun down, Amaka. We can talk about this."

"Talk?" Amaka barked out a bitter laugh. "You want to talk now? After everything you've done to me? After all the times you humiliated me and made me feel like I was nothing?"

"You're the one who crossed the line, Amaka," Jidenna shot back, his voice rising. "You couldn't let go. You've been stalking us, plotting against us—"

"Because you replaced me!" Amaka screamed, tears streaming down her face. "You threw me away like garbage and paraded her around like she was better than me!" She pointed the gun at Adanna, her hands shaking. "What does she have that I don't?"

Adanna stepped forward, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "This isn't about me, Amaka. This is about you not being able to move on. You need help."

"Shut up!" Amaka snapped, her voice cracking. "Don't you dare lecture me! You don't know what it's like to love someone so much that it consumes you!"

"Amaka, listen to me," Jidenna said, his tone firm but pleading. "This isn't the way. Put the gun down, and we can figure this out. I'll get you the help you need."

Amaka's grip on the pistol tightened, and her eyes filled with a mix of rage and despair. "It's too late for that. You chose her over me. You destroyed me, Jidenna."

For a moment, silence filled the room. Jidenna and Adanna exchanged a tense glance, their minds racing to find a way out of this nightmare.

But then, with a scream of anguish, Amaka pulled the trigger.

The sound of the gunshot echoed through the house as Adanna collapsed to the floor, clutching her chest. Blood pooled beneath her as her eyes widened in shock.

"No!" Jidenna shouted, dropping to his knees beside her. He pressed his hands against the wound, desperate to stop the bleeding. "Stay with me, Adanna. Stay with me!"

Amaka stood frozen, the gun still in her hand. The reality of what she had done seemed to paralyze her.

The commotion alerted the security team, who rushed toward the living room. The sound of their hurried footsteps grew louder, and the tension in the room reached its breaking point.

As the door burst open, Amaka's attention shifted to the security guards. Seizing the moment, Jidenna lunged at her in a desperate attempt to disarm her.

A second gunshot rang out, then a third, and a fourth.

Jidenna staggered back, clutching his chest as blood seeped through his shirt. He collapsed beside Adanna, his breaths shallow and labored.

The security team subdued Amaka, wrestling the gun from her hands as she screamed incoherently.

Jidenna and Adanna were rushed to the hospital, but the damage was too severe. Adanna was pronounced dead on arrival, and Jidenna succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Amaka sat in the back of a police van, her hands cuffed and her face streaked with tears. The weight of her actions bore down on her, but the storm of emotions inside her made it impossible to process.

She had destroyed everything—Jidenna, Adanna, and herself. The love that once consumed her had turned into an all-consuming darkness, leaving nothing but devastation in its wake.
