Chapter 9: The Book of Supreme Clarity

The so-called "Three Pure Ones" refer to the Jade Pure, Upper Pure and Great Pure, which are the highest among the heavenly realms of Taoism. They refer to the three revered gods residing in the Three Pure Realm: Yuqing Yuan Shi Tian Zun, Shang Qing Ling Bao Tian Zun and Tai Qing Dao De Tian Zun.

I believe everyone is already familiar with these three immortals. To put it simply, the legend of "The Three Pure Ones" is that when these three superior immortals attained the Tao and left the world behind, they left behind their secret techniques and methods. These are recorded in three volumes: "The Three Pure Ones' Cloth Robe Talismans", "The Three Pure Ones' Cloth Robe Mysterious Gates", and "The Three Pure Ones' Cloth Robe Divination".

Due to the long years, these three strange books have been lost. The Mr. Liu who helped my grandparents before got "San Qing Bu Suan" from his ancestors in Snake Cave many years ago, which contains mysterious divination techniques. If one practices it, they can understand the fate of heaven. Mr. Liu was extremely talented and could combine the hexagrams in divination with the talismanic techniques he learned to create a new talisman called "Shan Tian Da Xiu Kai Zhen Hua Fu". Unfortunately, later I heard that Mr. Liu's son's generation had some changes at home, and from then on, the Liu family no longer helped people with fortune-telling and fate interpretation.

The so-called Mountain Heaven Great Gathering is one of the hexagram symbols. The Great Gathering refers to the gathering of what has been stored, hence there is an image of opening up a formation. As for the formation being opened up, it is said that during the Shang Dynasty, Guang Chengzi broke through the Ten Absolute Formation's Lamp Fire Array when he was surrounded, and quickly used the Fan Tian Seal to offer sacrifices, destroying the Ten Absolute Formation and breaking open the formation. This is the origin of this hexagram. Those who obtain this hexagram will have no more obstacles.

The "Three Pure Ones Incantation" passed down to me by Ninth Uncle records the incantation techniques left behind by the Spirit Treasure Heavenly Master, which is a fundamental part of the five arts of mountains, medicine, divination, fate, and physiognomy. It serves as a medium and channel for practitioners to communicate with the heavens (spirit world). If used properly, it can have immense power, even changing the flow of underground water veins like Ninth Uncle did in his lifetime. However, the more powerful the incantation, the higher the cost, as the saying goes: "Heaven's way is not something that can be achieved by human effort." In other words, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

The remaining "Three Pure Mysterious Gate Book" records many lost mysterious gate escape techniques from ancient times, only those with innate wisdom can learn it. This technique is the most magical, and it's said that after achieving great success, one can turn paper into horses and beans into soldiers, and be all-powerful in heaven and earth.

This Qimen Dunjia thing I did hear about in high school, CCTV even broadcast an episode once. It's a complex thing that uses the displacement combination of the three triggers "Qí", "Mén" and "Dùnjiǎ" to produce magical phenomena, and it's said that it can also predict the future.

Unfortunately, the "Three Pure Mysterious Gates" which recorded the art of ambushing has been lost for a long time. It is said that Zhuge Liang was well-versed in the mysterious gates technique and the battle formations he laid out were incomparably mystical. Moreover, it is said that Mr. Zhuge also manufactured a batch of wooden oxen and flowing horses for his own use. However, due to the passage of time, this can no longer be verified.

Two days later, Ninth Uncle saw that the time had arrived, and it was now the hour of Ox in the mortal world. At this moment, the yin energy is at its peak, and it's time for me to send a dream to my family. So he let me sit on the stool, told me what I wanted my family members to do after finishing, and then pointed his right hand like a sword at my forehead. He asked me to close my eyes, silently recite three times the name of my own relatives in my heart, anyone would do, as long as that person was asleep, I could enter their dream.

I closed my eyes nervously, and at this moment I knew who I wanted to dream of. I had a rough idea in my heart, and I muttered: Grandma, grandma, grandma.

In front of me was a vast darkness, and in the midst of it, I seemed to see a glimmer of light. As I walked forward, I saw my grandmother lying on the bed, already asleep. Her hair seemed to have turned whiter than before. I don't know why, but I burst into tears. The past two days had been too strange and overwhelming for me, after all, I was only seventeen at that time. Seeing a loved one for the first time made me want to cry, maybe it's because I'm just too weak.

But I know it's not the time to cry now, because Ninth Uncle told me that my dream-traveling time is only five minutes. Five minutes later, I will automatically return to the Underworld. I wiped away my tears and gently pushed my grandmother, "Grandma, wake up."

My grandmother opened her eyes and saw me standing in front of her. The old lady actually cried, she got up and stroked my face, saying: "Xiao Fei, when did you wake up?" Looking at my grandmother like this, I couldn't help but want to cry again, but I held back. If I had to cry, it would have to wait until I was in the sun again.

I whispered to my grandma: "Grandma, I'm still asleep."

My grandmother asked me what was going on, but since time was too tight, I couldn't explain in detail. So I told her that if she wanted to wake me up, tomorrow at noon between 11am and 1pm, she should write my name and birthdate on a yellow chicken's body, tie one of the chicken's claws with a 90-meter-long red rope, then release the chicken at the nearest intersection to the hospital. After the chicken runs out 90 meters, shout my name nine times loudly, quickly pull back the rope, and rush back to my hospital room holding the chicken. I will wake up. After I wake up, if she gives me a soup made from ginseng, white peony, tuckahoe, and licorice root, I will recover.

My grandmother wanted to ask me many more questions, but the five minutes were up. I felt a huge force pulling me back, and all I could do was shout out loud to my grandmother while tears streamed down: "Don't forget! Grandma!"

When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the city of Yin. I looked up at the gloomy sky and saw those souls in black clothes walking in and out of 'half a step' with expressionless faces. It turned out that death was so terrible because once you die, it means giving up many things, many of which seemed ordinary when you were alive but only become precious after death.

"I realized for the first time in my life that family is so important to me. I miss home." I said to Ninth Uncle, and he nodded and patted my shoulder, saying: "You're not too late to realize this now, because you'll still have a lot of time ahead of you."

In the following ten days, I began to focus on learning the "Three Clear Book" with Ninth Uncle. Not for anything else, such as beheading demons and monsters, or making the heavenly book have an heir, or maintaining world peace. Those things had nothing to do with me, and I wasn't interested either. What I was doing now was to repay Ninth Uncle's lifesaving grace. Real lifesaving grace.

But this "San Qing Shu" is so profound, how can I, a young kid, learn it in a short time? So I had to memorize the entire book and wait until I returned to the world of the living to study it myself through the secret methods taught by Ninth Uncle. You wouldn't believe it, but now my memory speed is so fast that even I am afraid of it. It's not that I can remember everything at a glance, but after reading something four or five times, I can recall it, and even if I want to forget, I couldn't.

In just seven days, or fourteen hours in the mortal realm, I memorized the entire "Three Pure Talismans" scripture, all 365 pages. Such an achievement can't help but make me sigh at life - if I still had this ability after returning to the mortal world, I would be set for life! What universities like Tsinghua or Peking, what oil fields like Daqing? But Ninth Uncle told me that my good memory is because the things I'm learning are being directly imprinted onto one of my souls. It will never be forgotten. However, once your soul and spirit return to your body, everything will go back to normal. Moreover, it will also cause damage to your soul and spirit due to their separation from the body, which means that in the future, my memory will actually decline. Hearing this makes me feel depressed.

Since I didn't need to sleep, after I memorized the "San Qing Shu", Ninth Uncle directly taught me the entrance of Taoist magic. Ninth Uncle made me sit on a stool, with my hands behind my back, and asked me very seriously: "Xiao Fei, before teaching you the entrance of Taoist magic, I want to ask you one more question. Because those who learn Taoism are destined to have 'five flaws and three deficiencies, offending one', if you enter this path, it will come true, and later some things will be regrettable. Have you really thought it through?"

Ask me if I've thought it through, how could I have thought it through? Think about Mr. Liu from back then, with his incredible abilities, yet he still died young due to a fatal flaw. This time, if I really do get reborn, I don't want to die young again. But although my personality is weak, I also have a bit of stubbornness. Since I was young, my father taught me that "a gentleman does not seek revenge for past grievances". Although I'm not a gentleman, Ninth Uncle has saved my life before, and thinking about him waiting here for so many years for me to arrive... how could I not fulfill his last wish? Moreover, those five flaws and three shortcomings add up to eight in total, damn it, I won't be so unlucky, an 1/8 chance of a fatal flaw will surely let me pass. Thinking of this, I firmly told Ninth Uncle:

"Master, I've made up my mind. I'll learn."
