Chapter 2 The Idler

  ♂?,,

After the two siblings finished their breakfast, it was already bright outside. Yao Jinhua was still lying in bed, while Lin Lan sent her brother out and then began to dry the dried herbs in the courtyard. The leaves rustled gently.

"Hey...... Lin Lan is at home today!"

Lin Lan looked up to see Wang the matchmaker, standing outside the fence with a smile as bright as a chrysanthemum, her mouth open wide enough to show her molars, her eyes narrowed into a line, and the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes could crush two flies.

Lin Lan rolled her eyes and deliberately looked around: "How come I heard an old crow cawing so early in the morning."

The matchmaker Wang suppressed a smile, her mouth twitching slightly as she said: "Miss Lin Lan, is your sister-in-law at home?"

Lin Lan coldly snorted and said: "Whats the point of looking for my sister-in-law? My sister-in-law doesnt want to look for anyone else anymore, its nothing, Matchmaker Wang please leave!"

Wang the matchmaker has been in this line for decades, and the number of successful matches can be counted on one hand. On the other hand, the number of failed matches is countless. She had long grown accustomed to cold ridicule and hot sarcasm, and even brooms and kitchen knives were no strangers to her. The skills a matchmaker needs to cultivate are not just verbal sparring, but also the thickness of their skin. Due to her poor reputation, few people ask for her matchmaking services these days. When one of her old clients finally agrees to support her business, she cant let them be dismissed with just a few words.

"Hey! Lin Lan is really good at joking, I came specifically for this today, hurry up and ask the mistress to come out!" Wang said with a smile as she opened the gate herself.

Lin Lan, holding a cleaver for chopping herbs, rushed to the front of Wang Matchmaker in three or two steps, blocking her way with her hands on her hips: "Firstly, I am my own master and do not need anyones interference, so there is no need for Wang Matchmaker; secondly, Wang Matchmaker has a big reputation and is known as a fire pit pusher, so I dare not invite Wang Matchmaker; thirdly, the other day I told Chunfang that she was a fool, which made Uncle Chen Liang furious, and he said that if he saw Wang Matchmaker again, he would skin her alive. If you dont leave now, I will immediately go and inform Uncle Chen Liang."

"Ah, Miss Lin Lan, where did you hear such nonsense? Its all a misunderstanding about Spring Fragrance. That silly boy is just a bit dull and honest, not really stupid. It was Old Man Chen himself who said he wanted to find someone kind and honest for Spring Fragrance. I, Wang the matchmaker, have been doing this job for decades, always speaking from my heart..."

"Save those words for Uncle Chen Liang! I dont have time to listen to nonsense. Oh, speak of the devil, isnt that Uncle Chen Liang over there? Ah...Uncle Chen Liang..." Lin Lan stretched her neck and shouted loudly while waving a cleaver.

Madam Wang was so scared that she hastily said, "Lin Lan, I suddenly remembered that I have some urgent matters to attend to. Ill leave first and come back another day!" Madam Wang turned around and ran away. She didnt notice a stone on the ground and tripped over it, falling into the mud. She didnt even bother to cry out in pain, nor did she pick up the big flower that had fallen off her head. She quickly scrambled to her feet and ran out of Xi Village as fast as she could.

Lin Lan watched as Wangs matchmaker quickly disappeared and couldnt help but click her tongue in surprise, it turned out that escaping was also one of Wangs matchmakers strong points.

Yao Jinhua was sleeping soundly in the house, dreaming that Lin Feng had brought her a plump and tender roasted chicken. She had just taken a bite of the chicken leg when she was startled awake by Lin Lans shout. The roasted chicken flew out of her mouth, and Yao Jinhua was furious. She jumped up, opened half of the window, and scolded: "Youre trying to kill me! Cant you let people sleep? Youre a useless farmer who cant even grow crops..."

Lin Lan didnt get angry either, and intentionally spoke loudly to the air: "Village head is good! My brother went up the mountain to hunt, ah...... You ask who was scolding just now? Oh! Its my sister-in-law, she thinks Im making too much noise doing activities, disturbing her sleep."

Yao Jinhua heard this and her face turned black with anger. This dead girl, what nonsense was she spouting in front of the village chief? How could she show her face now? Yao Jinhua cursed under her breath, hastily putting on her clothes to rush out and appear before the village chief, to prove that the dead girl was lying. In this entire Gouxi Village, the only person who could make Yao Jinhua feel apprehensive was the village chief.

"Village chief..." Yao Jinhua didnt even have time to comb her hair, she just splashed some water from the basin on her head and rushed out of the house. But where was the village chiefs shadow in the courtyard? There was only Lin Lan sitting on a small stool cutting herbs.

Yao Jinhua furrowed her brow and asked in a deep voice: "Where is the village head?"

  "Leave."

"How could you tell the village chief I was sleeping? What kind of heart is that?"

Lin Lans big eyes blinked, and she innocently said: "How could it be me who said that? Didnt Sister herself shout it out? Can people even sleep anymore......" Lin Lan pinched her throat to imitate Yao Jinhuas tone.

Yao Jinhua was so angry that she thought about it and realized that she had indeed shouted loudly just now: "Cant you explain to me? Im pregnant now, and being sleepy is a normal reaction."

Lin Lan smiled: "Alright, next time I see the village chief, Ill explain it to him. My sister used to be lazy because she was preparing for pregnancy, now shes lazy because shes pregnant, and in the future, shell be lazy because taking care of kids is too tiring. How about that? From then on, my sister can sleep with a clear conscience."

“…No need to.” Yao Jinhua gritted her teeth, wishing she could go up and pinch him. In front of Lin Feng, Yao Jinhua, who was usually eloquent, became tongue-tied and couldnt get the better of Lin Lan, which was the most frustrating thing for her. She wished she could find a terrible husband for Lin Lan, one who would scold her three times a day and beat her once every three days, so that she would cry every day and finally feel relieved. Whats wrong with that matchmaker? She said she would give me an answer in two days, but now shes nowhere to be seen.

Yao Jinhua, in a bad mood, started to pick on him and said with an air of superiority: "Have you washed the bowls? Have you rinsed the pot? Have you done the laundry? This family cant afford to raise people who eat without working."

Lin Lan slowly poured the cut herbs into the basket, with a helpless tone: "Its really hard to make ends meet! So my brother goes hunting in the mountains before dawn, and I get up before dawn to work. Now I have to go to the county town to sell the herbs, exchange for two copper coins, oh... its really not easy to support someone who doesnt work."

Yao Jinhua almost spat out a mouthful of blood, her face as black as the bottom of a pot, and she nearly pounced on Lin Lan to tear her mouth apart. But Lin Lan wiped clean the kitchen knife, casually flung it, and the knife "thudded" into the chopping board. Yao Jinhua suddenly felt a stinging pain somewhere on her body, hastily abandoned her intention to fight Lin Lan to the death, and sulkily thought: Im not afraid of this little girls temper, but Im afraid she knows how to wield a knife - this little girl had once thrown out a kitchen knife that chopped off a venomous snake crawling by, precisely at the seven-inch mark.

Lin Lan ignored Yao Jinhuas glare and argued with her. Although Yao Jinhua was still young, Lin Lan wasnt afraid of her. Her principles for dealing with things in this household were: Firstly, never speak ill of Yao Jinhua in front of her older brother, because it would be useless anyway - her older brother had already been completely won over by Yao Jinhua; Secondly, unless absolutely necessary, never engage in direct conflict with Yao Jinhua, even if it was for the sake of her brother. Lin Lan still needed to maintain a facade of harmony. However, if Yao Jinhua went too far, Lin Lan wouldnt be easy to provoke either. Lin Lan slung a bamboo basket over her shoulder and walked out, saying: "Sister-in-law, Im leaving. I probably wont be back until nightfall, so you can take care of lunch and dinner yourself! Dont worry about me!"

Yao Jinhua cursed in her heart: Who wants to take care of this, its best if she never comes back. No way, she had to go find Wang the matchmaker and hurry up to marry off this fierce little girl.
