The Diary

Despite her initial reluctance, Nobody decided to open the diary. She held it at arm's length, almost as if it were a cursed object. Her hesitation was evident as she flipped through the pages. Cecily assisted her in turning to the first page, indicating that she was mentioned inside or that the diary might be hers.

"So, you're suggesting this might be mine… Well, if it mentions me, I suppose we'll have an excuse. I mean, can they really blame me for wanting my memory back if we get caught, and this isn't even mine?" Nobody reasoned, gazing at the diary with a mixture of curiosity and guilt.

"Understandably, no one could blame you!" a lady's voice suddenly chimed in, causing Nobody to jump in surprise.

"Absolutely agreed, my friend. This diary might just hold the key to transforming Nobody into a Somebody," Nobody replied, her gaze fixed on the first page, where some words appeared to be blurred, as if water had damaged the page. "I dare say that if there is an answer to be found in these pages, it could be of great help to me. So, I shouldn't feel too guilty, right? After all, it's not like I know anything. Isn't there a saying that goes, 'ignorance is bliss'?"

"Oh, that sounds lovely, dear. I genuinely hope you find some answers here," the sweet voice encouraged. "I wholeheartedly believe you'll discover something that can assist you."

"Ah, thank you so much. Despite the loss, I'm quite confident that with the right amount of optimism, we can achieve this go—" Nobody paused and turned to face the young girl, who was now looking up at her with curious eyes. "Y-you spoke! I thought you said you couldn't speak!" Nobody was taken aback, staring at the young girl in sheer astonishment.

"What a miracle we have here!" Cecily nodded vigorously, making it clear that she wasn't referring to herself. She pointed emphatically at the book, trying to draw Nobody's attention to it.

"The book? But books don't speak, so it couldn't possibly be..." Nobody began, her confusion evident as she closed the diary and held it tightly to her chest.

"No miracle, my friend. You were just looking in the wrong direction!" the sweet voice chimed in, and Nobody's eyes darted around the room, scanning left, right, and upward. Clutching the book even closer to her body, she scratched her chin in thought.

"En Garde! Who is there? Who is it that speaks? Are you the owner of this diary? Please forgive me if I seemed rude; I assure you, it wasn't my intention!" Nobody exclaimed, trying to muster some semblance of intimidation, despite her flustered state. The muffled sounds that surrounded her sent tickles down her chest, and suddenly, a realization struck her like a lightning bolt. She swiftly adjusted the book's position to reveal its cover.

"Sheesh, someone is quite flustered, aren't they?" the book remarked with a small sigh followed by a friendly chuckle. "Yes, indeed, it was I speaking the entire time! And a very good day to you!"

"I see that now, but how… how is it that you can speak? This is quite remarkable, if I do say so myself. I must inquire further about how such a thing is happening at this moment. I'm utterly fascinated. Oh, how I would adore having one for myself! I feel if you were truly mine, how could I ever forget something so remarkable and amazing?"

"Oh dear, revealing the secrets too soon might ruin all the magic! After all, true magicians never give away their secrets so easily. But let me tell you a happy and not-so-secret fact, my dear: I am actually a friend of yours! Although, it seems that you don't quite remember who I am, am I right?"

  "Indeed, that's true."

"Allow me… have you figured out our friend's name yet?" the book inquired curiously.

"Yes, this is Cecily! She's quite friendly and has been such a wonderful help."

"I'm glad you two have made acquaintance, but I imagine you don't recall her either?"

"No, sadly I don't remember her. It's as if this were our first meeting. Although I do seem to be able to understand most of what she's gesturing," Nobody pondered aloud.

"Ah, I see, that's good at least. Not the best, but it's a step in the right direction, nonetheless. Also, Nobody, I am Historia. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, my new friend. Before you ask, I won't tell you my owner's name; you shall figure out in due time to whom I belong."

"Ah, Historia, what a fitting name for a book! How very regal it sounds as well. But back to the matter at hand! Well, might I ask if by chance you know my real name?"

"I'm sorry, but I lack the internal knowledge to provide an answer. Many of my pages have become empty," Historia replied as she opened the book in her hands. Most of the pages were either blank or illegible, but there was one page that contained some information. "May I read this one page? Perhaps it can aid in my search to recover my lost self, and we can also invite our lovely friends to join us for dinner!"

"Please go ahead and read it. I hope it will be of some assistance to you in your quest."

"Wouldn't be nice to pass up such kind help, so allow me and don't mind if I do!" Nobody said with conviction in her tone. The feeling of guilt dissipated effortlessly, like butter melting on a warm croissant.

As if in a whimsical dream, the book closed its eyes and nodded in agreement. In response, the letters on the page began to glow with a mystical light, which grew brighter and brighter until beams of light shot out of the page, creating a breathtaking three-dimensional image that appeared to stand atop the book's pages.

Nobody was completely captivated by the magical moment, and she couldn't believe what she was seeing. Even though she knew that something like this should be impossible, there it was, right before her very eyes — a sight that was indeed absolutely possible.

"Never say never and believe in the unbelievable, I suppose! Luckily, I've always been open-minded to such ideas. This is something I definitely know about myself!" she exclaimed, caught up in the enchantment of the moment.

Nobody gently placed the book back on the rug where it had been sitting, eager to get a better look at the incredible imagery that seemed to leap off the page.

As the light gradually dimmed down, the page began to display moving images, much like that of a movie. Nobody was utterly captivated by what she saw. It was a genuinely breathtaking sight to behold, and she felt certain that this was just the beginning of many incredible things she was going to see and experience while finding herself.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

The page then began to reveal, in a somewhat slow and dreamy fashion, what appeared to be a little girl — very young, reaching onto a bed and picking up a beautiful, brand new, stuffed white and gray bunny. It was precious to watch how much she loved the bunny; she squeezed it a few times and tossed it in the air, catching it with ease. Unfortunately, the child's face was not visible as the perspective was from the young child’s point of view.

With a wide grin on her face, the little girl gave the bunny a big kiss and announced, "You shall be my darling girl, Cecily! That's what I'll call you, Cecily! Cecily!" She was absolutely beaming with joy and took each repetition of the name with a bounce in her step. After some time had passed, it seemed as if time itself had fast-forwarded. Nobody noticed that the young girl had begun to sew the name "Cecily" onto the foot of the rabbit. Although the girl pricked herself a few too many times, she persevered with diligence until the job was done. Once she had finished, the name "Cecily" was beautifully stitched onto the foot of the rabbit in vibrant red thread, a testament to the girl's loving care.

As the scene came to a close, the book shut, leaving Nobody lost in thought, pondering the significance of what she had just witnessed. There was a brief moment of silence that hung in the air, then the only sound was the faint echo of a distant clock ticking away the seconds. Nobody took a deep breath before speaking. “So a little girl had that exact stuffed animal. Cecily, may I see the stuffed rabbit?” Turning her head, she politely asked for the stuffed rabbit and nodded her thanks as the young girl handed it to her.

"Phew! Glad we got something. Did it help you in any way, young miss?" Historia said happily.

"Hmm, I’m not sure but…” She glanced over at the little girl putting the stuffed rabbit onto her lap. “So, I wager this is your diary, am I right? Your stuffed rabbit is named Cecily, right? You both have the same name after all, so it makes sense.”

Shaking her head in the negative, she made it clear that the stuffed rabbit was not hers. She followed the gesture by tapping her head with a finger, indicating that she was trying to convey that Nobody should think a little harder.

“But it seems to be the most logical thing to come to, isn’t it? Dare say I wonder if thinking outside the box, in this case, may be too outlandish?”

“It’s only outlandish if you deem it so. Did you not say that what I showed you was impossible but possible after you had seen it? How can you be so sure that what you saw wasn’t logical? Maybe it is actually quite logical to you, but you are not allowing yourself to see it?” Historia nodded her agreement along with the book.

“I suppose you are right. So, if it's not yours… And you are sure it’s not another person’s in the house?” Nobody inquired. Cecily dwelled momentarily on this, moving her head around as she thought. Finally, she shook her head to show acknowledgment that it was indeed someone in the house.

“Historia, so it is someone in another room perhaps? Have you any idea? I cannot believe we snooped in someone’s diary! Historia, will they be mad?” Cecily smacked her forehead with the palm of her hand in frustration, realizing that they were not making any progress and that Nobody clearly needed help. She pointed at Nobody, who was taken aback and blinked a few times in surprise.

“This is my diary, you say. Historia, you belong to me, but how can that be? I mean, while I do feel some form of nostalgia when I see you, that hardly means you are mine. But considering I forgot everything, I suppose this could not be too outlandish after all. Well, Historia, it is genuinely nice to meet you again! Forgive my forgetfulness!” she said, grinning with a toothy and playful smile.

“Oh dear, I know you will remember one day! I will keep a record. So please, as you are inviting people to the banquet, I shall record anything you should recall!” Historia's voice was as gentle as a lullaby, so sweet and kind that it made Nobody feel as if she were being cradled in a warm, reassuring embrace.

“Curious, but Cecily, did I name the bunny… no, if I was a child, then how could I have named the stuffed rabbit after you? Ah, it matters not. I can tell when I touch her that she means a great deal to me. I may not recall all the memories, minus the one I was given, but that was enough to tell me this is a treasure of mine.” She instinctively began to pet the stuffed rabbit very lovingly, as if her body remembered the little bunny with each stroke. However, her mind could not recall even the slightest trace of a memory. Cecily nodded in agreement, acknowledging that it wasn't possible for Nobody to remember everything all at once but reassured her that it would happen soon. “Maybe in due time, that is right. Cannot expect much right now. I should probably count my blessings rather than overthink. It will do me no good to overwork my brain.”

“I’d wager that’s a safe bet,” Historia said with a chuckle.

Nobody picked up the stuffed rabbit and cradled it in her arms, gently pressing it against her chest. As she did so, she silently made a wish and asked for guidance. “Bring me strength, dear Cecily.” Nobody then got up off the floor and laid the small stuffed animal on the bed, which she had not noticed earlier was dirty around her feet and little hands. "Was it always this dirty with wear? I could have sworn it was brand new not long ago. Maybe I am imagining it," she muttered to herself.

She looked at the child and noticed the resemblance to the doll, down to the dirty hands and feet. "Curious… I wonder if this, too, has an impossible but possible circumstance." Nobody was pondering but decided to brush it off for the time being.

Curious, Cecily turned her head to the side, wondering if Nobody planned to take the stuffed bunny named Cecily with them.

“No, I think it is best to leave her here. I doubt anything would happen to her, but I’d rather not risk it if you don’t mind! Now that I remember her, I most certainly would never want something to happen or to lose her along the way. Seems I have had this one for a very long time. I just feel like I cannot lose her. I also must carry Historia,” she said with a light laugh.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything that was happening around her, Nobody was grateful to know that the keys to her identity were hidden somewhere deep within her mind. The stuffed rabbit held a key piece of who she was, and even though she couldn't recall every moment with it, she felt a genuine attachment to it and knew that it was linked to many important memories, which she was eager to unlock and recall.

She ruffled little Cecily’s rabbit head, pondering the thought of a fairytale in the making. However, in this mysterious place, she knew that things weren’t always what they seemed. She decided to keep an open mind and appreciate the wonderful friends she had found, both Cecily and Historia.

“Now then, we have spent a good deal of time here, so shall we invite the rest of the guests to dinner? I am quite eager to learn more and meet them,” Nobody suggested.

Historia had a gentle smile and agreed. “Yes, my dear, let us continue on. Oh, how fun! I feel like we're in quite the adventure novel now! However, I shall take a small nap while you go and invite them. Should you need me, I shall awaken and impart wisdom if I have it.” She let out a yawn. “Sleep tight for me! Carry on with your duties, you two!”

Cecily eagerly agreed, using animated gestures to convey her excitement. Before they left, though, Nobody had one more question. She turned back to the wall with the photos and asked about the blurry figure in one of them. “The trio in the picture. I know that must be me and the stuffed animal Cecily, but who is the blurred one? I do not recall the blur, and for some reason, it pains me greatly. Will I remember who that is?”

Cecily touched the top of Nobody’s hand and rubbed it softly while giving a soft nod. The gesture conveyed a message of reassurance, saying, “Yes, you will. Be patient, you will see.”

“Ah, before I get overly sentimental with a dash of confusion over said feelings, do you mind if I take it with me?” Nobody asked, her voice cracking slightly. Cecily waltzed over to the wall and plucked the photo and the accompanying drawing off the wall. As she did so, a puzzle piece fell to the floor, appearing to be a corner piece of a larger puzzle. She picked it up and brought it with her to Nobody.

“Thank you so much,” Nobody said, bowing her head in gratitude. She took the photo and the drawing from Cecily, glancing at the photo once more. Though it brought a strong jolt of emotion to her heart, it was also filled with love and joy. She looked over at Cecily before quietly slipping the photo and the drawing into Historia's sleeping form.

“Okay, well, let us be on our way for real now. Shall we?” Together, they walked toward the door and swung it open, ready for their next adventure.
