Day 2.
The next day the Kaczmarek family was in a larger group, speaking of course of cousins from the area. In addition to the original four, several members of the family arrived at the shelter of the house, expanding the number of people in the group to ten, including Klara, who had nowhere else to go after yesterday's situation. She reluctantly told Emil about the fact that her parents had remained on vacation and she herself had returned early because of school. She agreed to stay until her parents returned, although she was skeptical and would have preferred to be home alone after all. Miko?aj, along with his nephews - 27-year-old Dawid and 25-year-old Dariusz - took care of reinforcing the fence, which needed a few adjustments. There had to be security at the site and this was a priority at the time because without it, everyone would have a problem.
"Drink it." Emil placed a glass of water under Klara's nose. The girl looked at the glass and then at him without saying a word. "Drink while there is something to drink. In a few months water will be hard to come by, if we can survive until then."
"As soon as my parents return I'm leaving. I have to find my family. And a boyfriend." Her last words raised Emil's blood pressure, although it wasn't so evident from him, only his eyebrow twitched. Perhaps it was also a hint of jealousy.
"I don't care." He replied immediately, in a cool tone. "You're here because I'm not the monster you thought I was. What you do later is none of my business."
There was a short silence during which the two of them exchanged glances. The boy looked toward the window, standing near it. They were on the first floor, in his room, which rather already served as a room for everyone. The silence was broken by Klara, leaning back in her chair.
"You still hate me, don't you?"
Emil looked at her with a blank stare, as if he wanted to reproach her with everything, but he knew it was all for nothing so he didn't do it after all. His eyes stopped on the glass of water. Talking to her was difficult for him.
"May your parents return quickly." He cut off the conversation, letting her know that he did not want her presence in the house. He left the room, walking directly to the toilet opposite the room. He sighed protractedly, looking at his reflection in the mirror. His long blond hair was falling over his face. Mentally, he felt weak, and surprisingly, this was not affected by the whole situation, at least not now. He grabbed the faucet tap, turned it. The water was still running. Emil took advantage of this, refreshing himself. He slapped himself several times in the face with the icy water, which brought him back to reality. "Pull yourself together." the words popped up in his head again and again. His eyes refused to obey him, everything began to blur. Warnings from doctors about his condition had just reached Emil. For Emil was struggling with high blood pressure, which also contributed to the damage to his eyesight. Of course, this wasn't the only thing that contributed to his visual impairment, genetics also came into play. The boy was glad that even before the end of the world he managed to buy glasses. Admittedly, they had been lying in his room unused for some time, but now it was time to put them on. Emil turned back to his room, paying no attention to Klara, who was trying to call someone to no avail. He took out a case for his glasses and took them, silver ones with round frames. He then left the room. He heard his cousin's voice a moment later, calling him downstairs. He went down immediately, wondering what it was about.
"Come on, help us with the fence." Dawid said immediately after seeing the boy.
"All right." seeing his shaven head, or so-called buzz cut, he immediately recognized his cousin.
He had already put on his shoes, wanting to go outside, but he heard conversations coming from the kitchen. When he went there, his family was sitting around the table discussing a plan of action. He was a little off topic, trying to catch up quickly by listening to them.
"...We'll wait. They said they would broadcast it on TV every day at 11:00. If they say to go somewhere, then we will do it." Miko?aj took a sip of tea from the hot mug.
"You know, no matter what they say on TV, we have to defend ourselves somehow. They got Aniela yesterday, I don't know what happened to the rest." Izabela, a woman in her late fifties, blew smoke from her cigarette, extinguishing it after a while. "In my opinion, we need to watch TV and that's it, I guess we have no other choice."
"Television won't last for several weeks, let alone electricity." Emil interjected, everyone looked at him. "There is no point in relying on the government. If the same thing happens all over the world, no one can stop it anymore."
Family members seemed to reluctantly agree with Emil. Very often there was silence, during which the slightest noise could be heard. The world collapsed, no one knew quite how to accept this fact. Judyta, the mother of Emil's cousins, took out her phone, trying once again that day to contact her adult daughter living in another part of the country. The telephone lines were down and when they came back on it was only for a moment. Contact was unavailable.
"Silence. She does not answer." she said, putting the phone on the table.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"It will be difficult for them in Gdańsk. We must hope that they will escape and find shelter." Anna finished her tea.
"Do you think they'll try to get in here?" Emil continued. He stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe
"It may be too far for these conditions." replied a thoughtful David, standing next to him. "Okay, we need to get to work."
"We need food. - Isabella cut in. "As much as we have here is certainly not enough for ten people."
"I can walk to the store. The corpses may be gone by now." Emil just looked forward to the opportunity to go outside and when it came he was not going to sit passively.
"If you want. Just take a weapon. And if you see them, run away." Miko?aj replied.
The boy headed straight for the door, but Dariusz stopped him for a moment. "Take this." he handed him his sports bag so he would have something to pack his food in. Before the door, Kaja ran into him, hugging him and telling him to watch out for himself. After leaving the house he looked up at the sky, it was cloudy and dark rain clouds were approaching from the north. This did not discourage him from setting out, one could even say that it was to his liking since he liked such weather. He crossed the gate, taking his axe with him for protection. The street appeared to be empty, which, considering that there were about 300 people living in this village, might have been a cause for concern. The last thing Emil wanted to see was an army of corpses numbering dozens of walking dead. He took a few deep breaths, it helped. He moved west, deeper into the village, his destination was a grocery store about a hundred meters away. He walked along the sidewalk, although the traffic here was unusually empty. Of course, there were cars passing by from time to time, families fleeing as far as possible from the town or into the city, but there was less and less life with each passing hour.
At one point he was scared by sound of hitting the fence. When he turned his head, he saw a man, his father's friend. He had been dead for a few, maybe a dozen or so hours. His dead look gave Emil a strange feeling, he felt sadness combined with anger. He knew the corpse wouldn't break the fence, so he could think for a moment. A tear came to his eye as he thought that the same thing could happen to his family.
"Where's your family? I hope it's as far away from here as possible." he raised the ax up, putting it to the man's head. It was an ideal opportunity to face the psychological pain of killing, although it is rather difficult to kill someone who is already dead. "Rest in peace."
He ended his eternal torment by driving steel straight into his brain. Body it's dead limply against the fence. Emil pushed it to fall to the ground and moved on. He finally reached the front of the store and stopped, looking around. He noticed that the woman he had eaten earlier had disappeared. "Another one for the collection." he thought. Blood stains revealed that the body had wandered further west along the street. Without waiting any longer, Emil crossed the street to the store building. The front door was open, which meant that someone or something could have entered there, and he knew it. He slowly walked inside, stopping every now and then to listen. He leaned around the corner, empty. He exhaled through his nose, hoping to get his supplies done without any stress. He opened the bag from Dawid and quickly started packing more important products. He wanted ones that wouldn't spoil after a week. When he was about halfway there, he heard footsteps behind him and immediately turned around, almost having a panic attack. He saw Klara, who started walking around the store without saying a word, ignoring Emil's existence.
"You give me a heart attack and won't even say anything?" he said with irritation in his voice.
"And what would you like me to say?"
"I don't know. What are you doing here?"
"I'm taking a walk. The supplies will come in handy for me when we run away with my parents."
Emil continued packing in the meantime while the blonde was talking. He wanted to be mean-spirited by telling her that they might not come back, but he didn't want to be that bad. Every now and then the boy would glance at the girl, who apparently noticed this because she continued her argument.
"You know, the lines started to work for a while. My boyfriend is on his way here. He said he would wait with me." The girl took a can of Coca-Cola from the refrigerator, which she opened and began to drink.
"Cool, but I didn't notice anyone asking." He finished packing and was ready to leave.
Suddenly they heard a sound. A loud bang from outside, resembling thunder or an explosion. They immediately ran out of the building. They looked up and saw falling bodies from the sky, which fell to the ground again and again, shattering into pieces from the impact. They were horrified at the first moment.
"Oh my God."
Fire could be seen among the clouds. The burning plane gradually emerged from the sky, swooping down. It was centrally above them, above the village in which they are located.
"He'll hit here!" Klara stood frozen, staring at the passenger plane that was dangerously low. There wasn't much time to think before whatever they did, the plane passed them while being several dozen meters above them and crashed into the ground in the further part of the village. The loud bang did not bode well. The fire miraculously did not spread too far, but the fire and the sound of the disaster began to attract zombies. Corpses began to emerge from their hiding places, making their presence felt.
"Go home now!"
Emil shouted to Klara, who for a moment didn't know what to do. They started running towards Emil's house, praying that the horde wouldn't see them. After a while, they ran to the gate and the rest were already standing there, asking what happened.
"I'll tell you soon! We have to hide!"
He ran behind the fence, closing it and ordering everyone to run inside.
