  "Duopoly."

"D-u-o-p-o-l-y. Duopoly is a market structure where there are only two sellers. The Cournot model deals with duopoly."

  "Add 1 point."

  "Engel Curve."

"Engel, curve. The Engel curve reflects the relationship between the equilibrium quantity of a commodity purchased and the level of consumer income, named after 19th-century German statistician Ernst Engel."

  "Add 1 point."

  Cross elasticity of demand.

"This word is too long, didn't remember it, but the concept remembered. It refers to the cross elasticity of demand which means when the price of good y changes by 1%, the percentage change in the quantity demanded of good x."

"Deduct 0.5 points. The cross elasticity of demand is crossestiand, must remember."

  ……

This is not a university economics class where the instructor asks students about economic concepts, but rather a daily routine for Xiaoyao to test Chen Ergou on the bus. Xiaoyao is in charge of flipping through the English version of "Macroeconomics" and "Microeconomics", proposing a concept for Chen Ergou to accurately explain. Since it takes about two hours to get to University Town by bus, Chen Ergou doesn't have the habit of wasting time, so he lets Xiaoyao randomly test him. At first, Chen Ergou could only answer 30 questions correctly in two hours, but after two weeks, he could answer around 80, and now he can break through 120. On average, that's one term per minute. What gives Chen Ergou the most headache is not Chinese concepts, but memorizing English words, which is much more difficult than doing a set of push-ups or skinning a rabbit.

There were two Chinese versions of economics textbooks that Chen Ergou had dog-eared in the doghouse near Aunt Mei's restaurant. The English version was specially bought by Xiao Yao for him, and he also prepared a "New Oriental English Vocabulary 4" for Chen Ergou, which was almost torn to shreds. In nearly a month, Xiao Yao found out that Chen Ergou had good memory, but not to the point of being abnormal, strong math skills, and a lot of spirit. He belonged to the type of top student who could possibly get into Tsinghua or Peking University if he only took the math portion of the college entrance exam. If he were born in the city and received training for the math Olympiad, he might even win an award. This made learning "Microeconomics" and "Calculus" a breeze for him.

There was a time in the calculus class when the old professor seemed to take an interest in Chen Erdog, who was listening attentively, and asked him to do a difficult problem on the blackboard that left all the top students bewildered. Chen Erdog wrote for half of the blackboard but unfortunately couldn't solve it in the end, standing awkwardly beside the old man, unsure of what to do. The old man stood with his hands clasped behind his back, staring at the blackboard for two or three minutes, then modified a few steps of analysis, put down the chalk, patted Chen Erdog on the shoulder and said kindly: "Don't be discouraged, this is one of the more difficult problems in my unpublished paper 'The Second Mathematical Crisis'. Even some of my students who are now teaching mathematics at foreign universities were only at your level back then. I've been watching you for a long time, and I even checked the class list to find out that you're an auditor. Not bad, not bad. Which department and school are you from? I'll help you get in touch with your supervisor, and if you have time, come learn math with me."

Chen Ergou didn't plan to delve into profound academic pursuits within the ivory tower, so he tactfully dodged and weaved. Now, his mind was set on taking courses that would allow him to get in touch with real money-making opportunities. The old professor, who had walked more bridges than Chen Ergou had roads, surprisingly didn't see through the ruse and didn't make things difficult for him, only whispering a word of regret under his breath.

Chen Ergou may not be a math prodigy in the classical sense, but he makes up for it with his diligence and perseverance. People like him who dedicate themselves to their studies often achieve great things because they can resist worldly temptations and focus on their research. Perhaps one day he'll win the Fields Medal, also known as the "mathematical Nobel Prize". However, Chen Ergou is unlikely to stake his youth on a prize that few have heard of, especially since it's only awarded to mathematicians under 40, which makes it a high-risk endeavor.

The most important thing for being a good listener is not to be clever or flattering, but to have thick skin. For example, once at East China University of Political Science and Law, Chen Ergou was asked by a middle-aged female comrade to explain a concept in the course "Countermeasures against Economic Crimes". As it was his first time encountering this field, Chen Ergou started beating around the bush, flattering the woman excessively, saying she was a renowned professor at East China University of Political Science and Law, and that he had come from another department specifically to learn from her. A classmate next to him couldn't help but laugh secretly, thinking that after half a month of auditing classes, Chen Ergou's eloquence had improved significantly, and he had become a slick talker. In the end, the woman let Chen Ergou off with a sense of accomplishment, even encouraging him profusely, occasionally casting warm and caring glances at him throughout the class. This made Chen Ergou feel uneasy, reminiscent of Wang Yuyan's affectionate gaze, which gave him goosebumps.

For nearly a month, Xiao Yao had hardly attended classes at her own university, instead following Chen Ergou to universities like Fudan, Jiaotong, and East China University of Political Science and Law. The back-and-forth commute took over four hours by car, and if there was a course that interested Chen Ergou in the evening, Xiao Yao would accompany him to sit in on it. Fudan had many famous guest lecturers, and Chen Ergou was particularly fond of successful people sharing their experiences. Standing beside him in the crowded audience, Xiao Yao could clearly see the fervent desire in his eyes for wealth and power. At first, she thought he was just a simple man with a straightforward gaze and a strong back, without too many complicated thoughts - as long as he had enough to eat, cigarettes to smoke, liquor to drink, and women to look at, he was content. But today's Chen Ergou was no longer satisfied; instead, he voraciously absorbed the essence of Shanghai, busily rushing about in a fast-paced manner, striving relentlessly without regard for anything, and climbing up the social ladder by any means necessary.

She didn't resist or refuse anything, just like when he was on top of her and she never felt disgusted. She would stand by his side, eat breakfast with him while waiting for the bus, help him review vocabulary and check concepts, take a nearly five-hour bus ride every day, and be a diligent college student listening to uninteresting content. Her greatest pleasure every day was watching him take notes and seeing his profile, admiring his beautiful handwriting, sometimes neat and elegant, sometimes bold and powerful. Then there were the times she'd pull him through the crowds at various universities in Shanghai, occasionally resting on a quiet bench, which made her feel very content.

Chen Ergou is a man who keeps forging ahead with unrelenting passion, while Xiaoyao, in Zhang Dai's words, is merely a delicate and refined woman suited for a life of quiet comfort. Unfortunately, she ran into Chen Ergou, which means she met the wrong person at the wrong time and place.

She smiled and let it go, but she saw the ambition in Chen Ergou that he never spoke of. The difference between him and other young men was that he could take action because of this ambition, step by step to complete it, even if he hit an iron plate, he wouldn't retreat. He would make every detail detailed and meticulous, maybe because he was good at math, he could always quantify a goal or thing to a precise degree. After listening to Chen Ergou for a month, Xiaoyao's biological clock could remind her to get up at 5:30 every morning on time without an alarm clock. At night, she wouldn't browse the web or search for gossip like usual, nor would she care about the latest makeup, clothes, or shoes. She tried her best to get close to Chen Ergou and drifted away from Zhang Xixi and her sisters, girlfriends, and sworn brothers. Every time Zhang Xixi saw Xiaoyao's tired face, she would curse Chen Ergou to death, wanting to tie Xiaoyao up in bed. Even intentionally setting the clock and Xiaoyao's watch phone time slow, but the next day Xiaoyao would still stand at the bus station with breakfast on time, waiting for Chen Ergou.

At last, after two months of eavesdropping, Chen Ergou told Xiao Yao to stop wasting his time accompanying him.

That day, on the bus, Xiaoyao was still laughing and chatting, but after getting off the bus and waiting for Chen Ergou to walk far away, she first sniffled, her eyes became moist, then pouted, and finally squatted on the ground crying uncontrollably.

She remembered a book that said, a woman's life must be infatuated with a man at least once, best if it's the first love, at that time can be silly and then can leave cleverness and wisdom for marriage.

That simple little brain of Xiaoyao's thought and thought, and from now on it would be impossible for her to be infatuated with any other man like this.

When she lifted her head, she saw a man with warm eyes squatting in front of her, holding a cigarette that hadn't been lit. The man stroked her hair and carefully pulled out a letter written in cursive script from his pocket, saying: "Here, today's your birthday, you were so busy you forgot, but I didn't. This letter took me a whole week to draft, and I stayed up all night under the streetlights to finish it. There are two typos in it, I was afraid that if I corrected them, you'd think it wasn't neat, so I left them as is."

With both hands holding the love letter, Xiao Yao laughed and cried at the same time, looking as lovely as a child.
