Chapter 2 A Piece of Ice in Jade Vase

At nightfall, in the inner chamber of Jingfeng Hall, Xus mother was holding a comb and slowly detangling her hair strand by strand.

"Miss, I recently got a new calming incense, would you like to try it?"

"New? Ill give it a try." Old Lady Qin was someone who loved to try new things, and she knew all about the good food and fun in Hangzhou. Even though she was no longer young and didnt like going out, she still knew a thing or two. "Hey, youve been eating the same old things for so long, its time to change up your taste."

The maid Xu stood beside the dresser, smiled kindly and said: "Old man, your mind is still as agile as when you were young."

Mrs. Qin nodded in agreement: "Yes, Ah Nuan at this age is the best." Ten miles of beauty, innocent and romantic, with endless energy and unending charm.

The old lady was still reminiscing about the past when she heard from a distance: Rumble... rumble...

"Hey, its going to thunder as soon as you mention it." Mrs. Xu put down the comb in her hand and rushed out of the room hastily. The sky had already darkened, with only a faint white glow visible in the distance.

"Not good, not good, hurry! Go see how Anuan is doing?" Qin old lady didnt even have time to put on her shoes, she directly ran out from the inner room and loudly shouted at the little maids in the outer room.

Its no wonder Old Lady Qin was so anxious.

Everyone in the Qins household knew that the eldest young lady was exceptionally beautiful, intelligent and clever, one of the top two talented girls in Hangzhou. However, this talented girl had a weakness since she was little: she was afraid of thunder!

At this moment, when Zixuan, the big servant girl of Jingfeng Hall, ran to Huanxiang Guan, Miss Qin was covering herself tightly with a quilt and shivering with her buttocks raised.

The thunder started with a muffled sound, but by now it has gained momentum.

Rumble! A loud thunderclap shook the house, making Qin Miao shrink her body in fear, not daring to breathe, with big drops of sweat falling plop plop.

"Ah!" How did it feel like something was pulling her quilt away, Qin Miao cried out loudly, but didnt dare turn around, still burying her head in the pillow.

"Amitabha... Amitabha..." Not turning back, then no need to see those ox ghosts and snake spirits, this is Qin Miaos logic. So even if the body lost the "cover" of being wrapped up, some chill ran down her spine, but it was still better than directly turning back to see something that shouldnt be seen.

Zi Xuan helplessly shook her head, gently lifted the quilt and placed it to one side, patting her: "Young mistress... young mistress..."

As soon as she heard the familiar voice, the little person on the bed immediately jumped up from the pillow and rushed into Zixuans arms. Needless to say, she burst into tears: "Wa!!!! Sister Zixuan!!!!! Wa wa!!!!!"

If todays shopkeepers saw Qin Miao in such a miserable state, they would be stunned. This is not the demeanor of a young master...

It was like this and that, and the Fragrant Pavilion was tossed about for another whole night, until the east became bright and Qin Miao was coaxed to sleep by the maids with a pat here and a pat there.

But after waking up, Qin Miao had already thrown away the embarrassment of last night, because today was a day to make new clothes.

"Wow, this years moon-white silk feels really good." Cui Feng pulled Qin Miao to pick and choose one by one.

"Ancestors, dont you think this lotus-leaf color suits our An Nuan particularly well?"

Madam Qin looked at her hand, the moon-white gauze shining like smoke and mist, which made her granddaughters pale face even more radiant. She couldnt help but praise her daughter-in-law: "Oh my, Fenger has a great eye for this. Use this to make a dress for An Nuan. And...make a few more thick ones for An Nuan, so she can wear them when we get back to Pingyang."

Qin Miaoer looked at the fabrics on the table, sniffing and examining them from left to right. These fabrics were all sold by her husbands Lang Yue Pavilion, with several more colors than last year, and the quality was also top-notch. After selecting and scrutinizing several times, she finally put down the fabric in her hand, sat down beside Old Lady Li, and had some tea.

"Grandma, Father can come now? When are we leaving?"

Qin Shu and Qin Yus business in Pingyang had stabilized, and they had also purchased a house as the Qin familys secondary residence in the capital. Taking advantage of the comfortable weather, the restless Old Lady Qin decided to take Qin Miao on a trip. Firstly, it was to inspect her sons arrangements in the capital, and secondly, it was for Qin Miaos sake.

She glanced at her granddaughter who was lowering her head to drink tea and said, "Your father said everything is settled, we just need to go. Ill get someone to pack things up later, it wont be more than ten days."

"Its been so long! I havent been to the capital in ages..." The last time she went to Pingyang, Qin Miao was still ten years old, and she spent a whole month in the capital with her grandmother and father, making friends with many little girls, and...

Qin Miao thought for a moment, somewhat uncomfortably tilting her head, and asked the old lady: "Grandmother, are... we going to the Weiyuan Marquiss residence this time?"

Cui Feng sat on one side, hugging her belly, and clearly saw through the little girls thoughts: "Anuan, are you thinking of getting married?"

"Eldest Sister-in-law!" Qin Miaos face turned slightly red, and her delicate skin suddenly flushed with a hint of pink.

Anu is fourteen this year and will be eligible for the hairpinning ceremony after the fifteenth of March. Old Lady Qin thought to herself that it was also time to go to Pingyang to take a look.

"How about not going? You forgot, Old Lady Xie from the Weiyuan Marquiss residence is very fond of you. Once we arrive in the capital, of course, we must go visit her." The Old Lady Xie mentioned by Qin Old Lady was her sworn sister and the elderly lady of the Weiyuan Marquiss residence. Qin Miao naturally remembered that every year on her birthday, this elderly lady from the capital would send her gifts through someone. When she was young, they were small trinkets like cloth tigers or peace locks. As she grew older, Old Lady Xie began sending her hairpins and paired bracelets, all of which became increasingly valuable with each passing year. This March on her birthday, the elderly lady had someone send an entire set of pearl headpieces, truly a grand gesture.

Although separated by thousands of mountains and rivers, she had only seen her once since she was a child, but the old ladys voice and smile left a deep impression on her. An Nuan thought to herself that this time when she went to the capital, she must prepare some gifts with her own thoughts for Granny Xie. Hmm...just giving them to Granny Xie seemed insufficient in sincerity...

In the following days, Qin Miao stayed in the mansion honestly and did not wear a young servants clothes to go out for a stroll, nor did she frolic with the maids in the courtyard. She quietly embroidered sachets for the Xie family in the capital with needle and thread.

When it comes to Qin Miaos embroidery, it cant compare to her business acumen, at most its just passable. Fortunately, she is a flexible person and knows that her skills are not as good as the familys seamstress, so she simply lets the seamstress do the foundation work, and she only needs to embroider the patterns on the sachet.

The day of departure is getting closer and closer, and the sachet can finally be sewn with the last needle. Qin Miao stretched her waist towards the sky, looking at the golden silk sachet she was holding in mid-air, feeling an indescribable joy, more delightful than making a few extra profits from selling fans. Especially the white horse sachet on her right hand side, its unique flower pattern, plus what she thought was her excellent embroidery skills, made her smile uncontrollably.
