Chapter 3: Turning Black

Wei Luo stepped on the hard earth that protruded from the pond, and hurriedly came to the water pit. She stretched her head out and eagerly looked into the water.

In the clear water, a tall and slender girl of about thirteen or fourteen years old appeared. She had a pair of almond-shaped eyes with extremely black pupils that seemed to have no impurities. Her nose was straight, her lips were not traditionally cherry-like, but thick and moist, unfortunately without much blood color. The person in the water had delicate eyebrows and eyes, with a subtle coldness hidden beneath her gentle and soft demeanor, as well as a hint of unripe greenness that had not yet fully bloomed.

Under her long and shoulder-length black hair, her skin looked particularly fair, but unfortunately lacked some rosiness, looking a bit unhealthy.

Wei Luo tilted her head to gaze at the inverted reflection in the water, and the more she looked, the more satisfied she felt. She used to be pretty too, but now this face hadn't fully developed yet was already better than her previous appearance.

As he looked around, Wei Luo suddenly discovered that the ornaments on his head had disappeared. He thought they must have fallen off when the big man in a hemp garment took him away from the stabbing scene.

Wei Luo admired it for a while, then opened the wooden box and took out that bamboo book. Each bamboo slip had about twelve words on it, and eight slips added up to only about a hundred or so words. Wei Luo thought to herself: The Art of Disguise? What mysterious words! But this content is a bit too little, isn't it?

These hundred or so words, the first twenty or more are a general outline, and the following seventy or eighty words are detailed explanations. Speaking of which, in Wei Luo's view, this is also an introduction that can't be simplified any further.

In the hundred or so words, there were over ten strange-looking terms. However, Wei Luo only took a glance at them and knew their meanings. It seemed that the original consciousness of this body was still influencing him.

Wei Luo read it several times and then memorized the contents of the bamboo slips. She put the bamboo slips back into the wooden box, turned around and walked deep into the forest.

It's unclear whether it was due to the shock, but Wei Luo hadn't eaten anything and yet didn't feel any hunger. Now she only thought about quickly changing her appearance before going out to find food and face the world again.

Wei Luo searched in the forest for half a time, and finally found a stone that was easy to dye, two plant juices. A bamboo slip recorded the method of using these three things to change one's appearance.

According to the bamboo slips, there is one thing that is indispensable for this disguise technique, and that is honey. Where can Wei Luo find honey in such a hurry? Now she is preparing to use this disguise method, which can only change the color of her skin.

She gathered these three things with leaves and returned to the pond.

Wei Luo applied the several items and then slowly wiped them onto her face with lake water. It's actually quite interesting, this unobtrusive thing, when applied to the face, not only is the color very even, but it's also quite difficult to wipe off when she uses her hands to rub it.

Wei Luo carefully applied the makeup to her neck, behind her ears, collarbone, and most of her forearms. Before long, a clear, slightly darkened complexion appeared on the water's surface, with rough skin that made her look especially slender. With her bright, cold black eyes, the rustic country boy in the water added a few touches of elegance.

Wei Luo looked down at her reflection, thinking to herself: It seems I need to get some more sun. No wonder people say: one white covers three ugliness, my current appearance compared to earlier is truly like two different people.

After admiring the face for a while, Wei Luo put on that men's robe. The robe was blue and extremely large and long, obviously belonging to Ma Yi Da Han himself. After putting it on, Wei Luo seemed like a little kid wearing an adult's clothes.

After searching in the woods for a while, Wei Luo found half of a broken sword blade. She cut off some of her robe with an iron piece, shortened and narrowed her pants, and then tightly tied them up with a belt. Although she had torn and cut it into tatters, turning good clothes into beggar's clothing, they finally fit. After changing into men's robes, Wei Luo looked like a real thirteen or fourteen-year-old young man in the water. However, upon closer inspection of her eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth, one could still see a hint of elegance and charm.

Wei Luo watched, her eyebrows slowly furrowing as she thought to herself: In this chaotic world, I absolutely cannot let people see that I was originally a woman. This won't do, on this journey I must learn more about disguise techniques, find more materials, and get rid of the gentle aura between my eyebrows.

Wei Luo was cautious by nature, and when she changed into this set of men's clothes, she also took off the outer garments and undergarments she originally wore on her body and tore them to shreds. However, the embroidered shoes on her feet were still luxurious, even with jade inlays, such shoes were really too eye-catching, but Wei Luo didn't know how to weave grass shoes, and there was no way for her to change into a new pair.

However, these trousers are too big and too long, completely covering both feet. From the water's perspective, no matter what angle people appear from, they all look like poor boys.

Wei Luo reached out and pulled off the jade piece from her shoe, then put it away with the money, turned around and walked towards the official road.

The direction she went was where the team was ambushed. Her body was weak and pampered, but it was only three miles away, and Wei Luo walked for almost half a day before arriving.

The scene had been cleaned up by the Chu people early on, and even the corpses and carriages were taken away. On the vast grassland, if it weren't for the large patch of bloodstains and the remaining broken sword fragments, no one would have known that a tragic case had occurred here today.

Wei Luo walked quietly through the blood-stained grass, a thread of bitter helplessness entwining her heart. Less than fifty steps in, Wei Luo was overwhelmed by the stench of blood and turned to leave. She had originally hoped that something valuable would be left behind, but now she saw that everything had been cleaned up too thoroughly, and she didn't dare to hope anymore.

The most urgent thing now is to put on a pair of straw shoes. What's next? Ma Yi Da Han said it very clearly, her own marriage has other hidden reasons, and she cannot return to Yue Guo. Besides, even if she could go back, she herself is an imposter.

It's already around two o'clock in the afternoon, and the sun is slowly setting. On the dusty ancient road, as far as the eye can see, there are only vast expanses of primitive forests and endless grasslands, where are the pedestrians?

Although it was an official road, they were all uneven and bumpy yellow earth roads. Wei Luo made up his mind not to go to Yue Guo. Yue Guo, huh, should be around Jiangsu and Zhejiang? That would be southeast direction. Looks like he could only head northwest now.

I don't even know where this is. Which vassal state's territory is it in? Hmm, there's Jin State, there's Yue State... Could it be that I've crossed over into the Spring and Autumn Period or the Warring States Period?

Wei Luo looked westward with a hint of anxiety, thinking to herself: With this frail body of mine, I'm afraid I won't be able to walk even seven or eight miles by sunset.

Wei Luo walked with one foot light and one foot heavy, her swaying figure casting a long shadow in the sunset.
