Chapter Fifty-Nine: Talking About Marriage

May and July showed off for a while, then walked away with their heads held high. The twelfth lunar month made a face behind the two: "Juanzi sister, Juanzi sister, I actually heard them mention Juanzi sister. They got something, look at how they're showing off!"

Summer solstice is smiling. The little girl in December is quite interesting. When I first met her, she was a shy and quiet person, but once familiar, she showed her lively side, speaking quite sharply, and having everything counted in her mind.

Actually, Third Uncle Xia Yunhan and Third Aunt Feng were also such people.

The next day, Xia Zhi still went to the back house to study with Xiao Hei Yu. She learned characters quickly and now spends more time practicing writing every day.

"Xiao Long," Old Man Xia urged his younger son beside him, "you must work hard. Otherwise, even sixteen-year-olds will be better than you."

"Uh-huh, uh-huh." Little Black Fish nodded, but actually didn't take Old Man Xia's words to heart. He was competitive with others, but not with Xia Zhi. "Sixteen clever brains are useful, of course he learns well."

Xia Lao Ye Zi smiled and shook his head, looking at Xia Zhi with affectionate eyes. He already knew about Xia Zhi inviting him to dinner, and thought that this granddaughter was really good, generous and kind to people. Although they had separated households, a big family should get along like this.

"Sixteen, tonight your aunt will wrap dumplings, you all come." Old Man Xia said to Xia Zhi.

Xia Zhi lifted his head and thought for a moment. Old Master Xia had bought a piece of meat at the market, which was probably intended to make dumplings. However, if they were all invited to eat, it would be fine without Xia Sanbo's family, but without Xia Erbo's family, who knows how much gossip there would be.

Xia's uncle and his family were all at home, wrapping dumplings together. This meal was enough to keep Old Master Xia and Old Madam Xia busy.

"Grandpa, we have food at home tonight, so I won't come over. You and grandma can just eat with my uncle."

"Come over here, all of you. I told your grandma to wrap more dumplings tonight. Your second uncle's family and your third uncle's whole family are also invited." Old Man Xia said with a smile.

"Sixteen, if you're called, then come." Little Black Fish said with a raised head.

Originally, Old Man Xia had planned to invite the whole family. In that case, Xia Zhi wouldn't have any worries and smiled as he nodded. "Then I'll come over to help my grandma chop dumpling fillings at that time."

A cough in the courtyard was Xia Ershu's voice. Old Master Xia seemed to have thought of something and called Xia Ershu to come up to the upper house.

"Dad, what's up?" Xia Er Shu entered the house, first glanced at Xia Zhi and Xiao Hei Yu, then smiled and spoke to Old Man Xia.

"Second elder, sit down, I want to talk to you about something." Xia Lao Yezi beckoned Xia Er Shu to sit beside him. The two children were studying at the head of the bed, and Xia Lao Yezi didn't avoid them. "The fifteenth day of the fifth month is approaching, do you two have any plans?"

It's time to talk about May's marriage.

Old Man Xia is a caring person, although he has separated from his family and lives alone, he still pays great attention to the marriages of his grandchildren. The marriage of Summer Second Uncle's eldest daughter, Liuyue, was arranged by Old Man Xia two years ago, and she married the nephew of one of his old friends as his wife.

"Dad, which family have you chosen for May?" asked Uncle Xia Er.

"Yesterday, we old brothers went to the town to rush to the fair. We had a gathering." Old Man Xia puffed on his dry tobacco pipe and told Summer Second Uncle, "Do you still remember your Uncle Qian?"

"I don't remember." Xia Er Uncle thought for a moment, but couldn't recall it.

"It's Qian Jiaji's Uncle Qian. He used to come to our house and even held you in his arms before. His eldest grandson is 14 this year, but hasn't mentioned getting married yet. As soon as I heard that, I thought of our family's May arrival. Your Uncle Qian's household is a decent farming family, that's definitely not wrong. The kid is also quite capable, he's good with his hands in the fields and even helps your Uncle Qian buy and sell sheep when he's free."

Old Man Xia said these words and looked at Second Uncle Xia, wanting him to take a stand.

  Xia Er Shu hesitated slightly.

"What else can you pick at?!" Old Xia frowned slightly as he saw his second son not speaking, "We know our own children best. May is not as good as her sister. If we really compare, she's not even worthy of being the daughter-in-law of Uncle Qian's family. We old folks just look at the root of things. This marriage will do!"

Xia Zhi sat on the kang, and she heard Old Man Xia's words in her ears. She couldn't help but smile wryly, thinking that Old Man Xia's style of matchmaking was indeed simple and crude. It seemed that their marriage had been decided in a similar manner back in June.

"Uncle Xia rubbed his head: "Dad, I'll discuss this with his mother again?"

Old Master Xia looked at Second Uncle Xia deeply. "What's there to discuss!" However, he didn't stop Second Uncle Xia from going to discuss it. Summer Cloud had a calculating mind, he never directly disagreed with his father. Whenever there were things that weren't good to say out loud or would offend his father, he would let Second Aunt Xia be the one to bring it up.

He had been out for a while when Xia Er Shu and Luo Shi arrived.

"Father," Xia Er Shu came in and loudly called out "father", then sat down on the edge of the kang with one leg bent. "How's Old Qian's family doing?"

This is about the financial situation of the Qian family.

Old man Xia didn't like to hear such words. "A decent farming family, all members of the family are hardworking people, they can live a good life! What did you marry your daughter for? Isn't it just for a decent and stable life?"

Xia Er's face twitched, and she was quite displeased with Old Master Xia's words. "Dad, that's not what you should say. Who isn't a family going through tough times? The June wedding is up to you, after all. And now, June's life is already very strained."

"What's the hurry!" Old Master Xia tapped his tobacco pipe on the edge of the kang, "In June, it's time to be frugal. Are those two newlyweds getting along or not? How are her parents-in-law treating her? Don't learn from those wicked and crooked ways, just wish them well. Once they have money, their daughter will live a good life!"

The last sentence was meaningful, and Xia Erniang also heard it, her face looked a bit unpleasant. But she didn't dare to quarrel with Old Master Xia.

"Dad, what does that young man look like? Is he good-looking?"

"This is unbelievable!" Old Master Xia was even more dissatisfied, "A young family, what does it matter how they look? As long as the child doesn't have any major flaws, that's all that matters. Even if they're not perfect in appearance, that's not a big deal! You're marrying off your daughter, and you're concerned about their looks? Are you finding a son-in-law for your daughter or buying a decorative vase?"

Xia Lao Ye Zi and Xia Er Shu did not see eye to eye and parted on bad terms.

When Old Lady Xia came back, Old Man Xia complained to her. "Year after year, there's no progress at all, and it's getting worse. In the past, there weren't so many troubles, this is what happens when you learn from the wrong people!"

Juanzi's younger sister became someone else's concubine, but Old Man Xia wouldn't care about such trivial matters. However, Xia Erniang and Wu Yue were too showy, which made him very displeased and also raised his vigilance.
