Chapter Thirty-Four: Academic Affairs

Seeing Xia Shu, Xia Zhi immediately wiped the smile off his face. He glared at him: "I just can't stand looking at him from afar, do you have anything to say?"

"No, no..." Xia Shu lowered his head and didn't dare speak again.

The little black fish was caught off guard but still wasn't happy.

Xia Zhi smiled and said: "Old uncle, I'm looking for you."

"What are you looking for me?" Little Black Fish asked immediately, his unhappy tone replaced with concern.

"Old uncle, you said you would teach me to recognize characters." Xia Zhi smiled secretly in her heart, but spoke seriously to Xiao Hei Yu.

"Oh, oh..." Little Black Fish nodded. He had eaten breakfast early in the morning and then his friends came to find him, after that, he played with water with his friends and forgot everything else. Now being reminded by Xia Zhi, although he hadn't played enough, he still thought teaching Xia Zhi was more important. "You guys play, I'm going home."

Little black fish waved goodbye to his companions and followed Xia Zhi back home.

"Sixteen, are you okay?" Sun Lan'er asked as she ran over with Xia Zhi, also stunned into silence.

"I'm fine, Lanzi sister." Xia Zhi smiled sweetly.

"Sixteen, you should learn to recognize characters now?" Sun Lan'er asked while walking alongside Xia Zhi.

"Hmm." Xia nodded and asked Sun Lan'er, "Lanzi sister, do you want to learn together?"

Sun Lan'er smiled and shook her head: "I won't learn, I'm not that material, it's useless even if I learn. Sixteen, you go learn to recognize characters, I'll sew a jacket for you, and send it to you when it's done."

"Alright then, Sister Lan." Xia Zhi looked at Sun Lan's serious expression and didn't refuse.

She didn't go up when she reached the lower slope, and instead followed Xiaohu along the small path beside the courtyard wall towards the backyard.

"Sixteen, I know you're afraid I won't be able to beat him." Little Black Fish said gloomily. "This time is fine, but next time won't be. I can beat him, just wait and see next time." Little Black Fish clenched his small fist and spoke with a serious face.

"Alright!" Xia Zhi didn't explain anymore.

Seeing Xiao Hei Yu'er come back early, with Xia Zhi and his siblings following behind, Old Lady Xia was delighted. When she heard that Xia Zhi had come to learn to recognize characters from Xiao Hei Yu'er, Old Lady Xia was even more thrilled.

She was busy sweeping the kang, putting a table on the kang, and then taking out pens, ink, paper, and inkstones to arrange on the table. Xiao Hei Yu Er, Xia Zhi, and Xia Shu each had one pen. Xiao Hei Yu Er's pen was an old one, while those given to Xia Zhi and Xia Shu were new ones.

"Sixteen, you want to learn characters with your uncle, just come whenever you want. Whatever is needed, Grandma and Grandpa have it all, I guarantee that everything will be ready for you." Old Lady Xia was busy arranging things while talking to Xia Zhi.

Little Black Fish is very playful, especially loves to play in the river. Old Lady Summer is worried, but no matter how much she says, Little Son doesn't listen. She can't tie Little Black Fish to her waistband after all.

It would be better if Xia Zhi got along with Xiao Hei Yu. If Xia Zhi could spend more time teaching Xiao Hei Yu to recognize characters, it would not only keep Xiao Hei Yu from going to play in the river, but also be very beneficial for Xiao Hei Yu's own studies.

Old Lady Xia was eager for summer to arrive so she could study Chinese characters with Little Black every day.

Xia understood some of Xia Laotaitai's thoughts, and she really wanted to learn more characters faster, so she readily agreed. Xia Laotaitai nodded happily, watching the three children sit at the table, and sat beside them doing needlework, occasionally looking up to glance at them before smiling and lowering her head again.

Little Black Fish was a teacher for the first time, he was very serious, and took out a "Three Character Classic" book that Old Man Xia had taught him to read with, first teaching Xia Zhi and Xia Shu to recite a passage, then picking up his brush to write characters, teaching the two siblings to recognize them. Then he also taught the two children to hold brushes to write characters.

Xia Zhi cherished this opportunity and studied very diligently. Xia Shu was also diligent at first, but after a while, he began to look around distractedly. When Da Qing wagged her tail and came in from outside, Xia Shu's mind was even less focused on learning characters.

"Sister..." Xia Shu pulled Xia Zhi under the table.

As soon as summer arrived, she turned her head and looked at him, then understood.

"Little tree, can you recognize these few characters that Uncle Lao taught?" Xia Zhi asked.

Xia Shu nodded repeatedly, "I know them all, Father taught me. Sister, I think..." Xia Shu's eyes glanced at Da Qing. Xia Zhi had promised him that he would follow his parents to Kao Shan Tun, and learn from his father and mother to say the words to Xia Zhi, then he could play with Da Qing for a while.

Xia Zhi thought that her brother was really unable to learn, so she thought for a moment and then consulted with Xiao Hei Yu. Xiao Hei Yu knew that Xia Zhi had agreed, and Xia Shu had indeed made contributions, so he nodded his head.

Xia Shu let out a whoop and jumped down from the kang, pouncing on Da Qing.

Dà qīng didn't pay attention to him and jumped aside.

"Big Green!" Little Black Fish called Big Green over, holding Big Green's head and instructing him for a while, then calling Xia Shu to come over. This time, when Xia Shu touched Big Green again, Big Green didn't dodge, but still refused to look directly at Xia Shu.

It was like this, and it also made Xia Shu happy. One person and one dog ran out to play. Xiao Hei Yu Er concentrated on teaching Xia Zhi alone.

  Xia Zhi learns very quickly.

Old Man Xia returned from outside and saw this scene. His youngest son and granddaughter were sitting side by side, carefully reading and writing characters. Old Man Xia was both surprised and delighted, and after listening to Old Lady Xia's explanation, he nodded repeatedly in approval.

"At sixteen you should learn how to write, but still have to start with copying from a model." Old Xia sat down at the edge of the kang beside the table.

Xiao Hei Yu suddenly enlightened, was about to take out his own red book to give to Xia Zhi. Old Master Xia stopped him. "You still use yours, I'll let your third brother buy one back for her later."

"Grandpa, that would cost a lot of money. I just need to be able to recognize characters and write them, then I won't have to copy from the red book." Xia Zhi said, lifting his head up.

Xia Lao Ye Zi disagreed: "If you want to learn, then you should learn well. The few dollars for the red exercise book, I can afford it." Xia Lao Ye Zi decided that from now on, he would provide all of Xia Zhi's writing materials, and he also took over half of Xiao Hei Yu Shi's workload.

Later, Xiao Hei Yu took charge of teaching Xia Zhi to recognize characters. As for writing, it was the responsibility of Old Man Xia.

"Your own words are still crooked, and you've led sixteen astray." Old Master Xia said with a straight face to Little Black Fish, "I think sixteen learns quickly. The few words you taught him will soon be used up. Can't you teach sixteen some more?"

"Dad!" Little Black actually didn't like studying much either, after all, he could sit for a good half day. He was still the most lively and active one. "Then you teach me."

"You study hard and I'll teach you." Old Master Xia still had a stern face on, but the corners of his eyes revealed a hint of a smile.

"Dad, I'll definitely study hard." Little Black Fish said loudly at once.

  Old Man Xia smiled silently.

After a while, Old Man Xia told the two children to take a break. The tracing paper that Xia Zhi had bought was also brought back. The primary level tracing paper could be found at the village head's general store.

Summer solstice holding a red-painted fan smiling.

Old Lady Xia suddenly remembered something and called Xia Zhi over to talk to her in private.
