Chapter Twelve: The Exercise Proceeds

  The second morning

Chen Hua and his group of people felt much more relaxed after Zhang Feng's silver needle treatment yesterday, while Sun Ma Zi's group were all robust men who could withstand a beating, so they and Chen Hua's group were among the few in the 600 new recruits who still had sufficient physical strength.

"Today, I will lead you in practicing martial skills. I don't care how many lashes you received or how much suffering you endured at Wang Baihu's place yesterday. Today, whoever is not serious about training here will also have a lash waiting for them. Don't think that my methods are gentler than Wang Baihu's, I will only demand more strictly from you." The icy voice of Liu Sheng Baihu had once echoed on the drill ground, and many new recruits still remembered the seventeen forbidden laws and fifty-four beheadings he had mentioned a few days ago. When they heard Liu Baihu's voice, many of them involuntarily shivered with fear.

"What is combat skill? It refers to the techniques used in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy on the battlefield. To survive on the battlefield, physical strength is needed but it's even more important to master combat skills! Combat skills are the capital that will keep you alive on the battlefield! It's the most essential ability for all of you new recruits to grasp!"

"Swords, spears, halberds, bows and arrows, even shields - all these instruments are ubiquitous on the battlefield. To survive and walk off the battlefield, one must have a good understanding of all these weapons."

"The sword is the primary weapon of an infantryman, capable of chopping and slashing, thrusting and parrying. The soldiers of our great Ming dynasty are equipped with the willow-leaf curved sword, a single-handed sword that is agile and lightweight, paired with a light shield, making our Ming army soldiers versatile in both offense and defense on the battlefield!"

"Spears, long-shaped stabbing weapons, were especially important in the north. In fighting against the Northern Yuan cavalry, the long spear array was the absolute main force!"

"The bow and crossbow have been the most indispensable weapons on the battlefield since ancient times, alongside cavalry. In pre-Qin times, the bow and crossbow were already renowned, and whenever there was a battle, they would always be at the forefront, killing countless enemies!"

"If the situation is urgent and there are no weapons, then you need to fight with your bare hands. Of course, whether armed or unarmed, the ultimate goal is to kill the enemy. You must remember that on the battlefield, regardless of age, there are only enemies and our own people, and only dead enemies cannot take your life!"

  "Understood?!" shouted Liu Sheng

"Understood!" The six hundred new recruits shouted in unison.

Liu Sheng nodded in satisfaction and waved his hand: "Now start practicing, each team leader bring two old soldiers to demonstrate for them."

Zhang Feng had also practiced martial arts on Mount Wudang, but up in the mountains there were only swords and Tang knives, which are different from the willow-leaf knife and goose-quill knife he is using now.

A flash of knife light, Zhang Feng picked up a willow-leaf knife and brushed several knife flowers. The people around him were startled, afraid that he would accidentally drop the knife and hurt himself.

Xiao Liu's face was full of admiration, and he curiously asked: "Brother Zhang, you're really awesome! You can do embroidery and also wield a knife, how many things did you learn on Wudang Mountain?"

Zhang Feng smiled and thought to himself, "That's a long time, eleven years since I was five, on the mountain my masters taught me with all their heart, I benefited greatly."

"Alright, Xia Liu Zi, stop chattering and let me demonstrate the military knife technique to you all first. Once you've roughly learned it, you can practice in pairs and get familiar with each other's moves." Chen Hua interrupted Xia Liu Zi who was about to ask more questions, picked up the willow-leaf knife and began practicing the military knife technique.

The swordsmanship in the military is practical first, with the primary purpose of killing the enemy. It is basically divided into four types: stabbing, swinging, chopping and wrapping.

Stabbing includes straight stabbing and slanting stabbing; swinging has left swinging and right swinging, all of which are knife swings from bottom to top. Chopping includes straight chopping, slanting chopping, people with great strength can chop a person in half with one knife from head to toe; wrapping is a defensive stance in knife techniques, using the body of the knife to block the enemy's attack, but not rigidly, the oblique side of the knife can defend against the enemy's force.

Chen Hua demonstrated a set of military knife techniques while explaining them in detail to Zhang Feng and the others. Xia Liu Zi watched with great enthusiasm, applauding and cheering loudly.

"Alright, now all of you go get a wooden sword and practice with it." Chen Hua wiped the sweat from his forehead as the soldiers brought over two bundles of wooden swords.

"Huh? Why a wooden sword? This is too much......" Little Liuzi muttered discontentedly.

"Slap" Old Gu slapped a palm on Xiaoliuzi's back of the head.

"You little brat, you're too much. If I gave you a real knife, you'd probably end up cutting yourself." As soon as Old Gu said this, Little Liu's face turned bright red, causing everyone to burst out laughing.

Zhang Feng picked up a wooden knife and slowly began to move his body, recalling the moves Chen Hua had demonstrated earlier.

Only to see Zhang Feng's two legs open to the left and right, his left hand horizontally on his waist, his right hand holding a knife flatly in front of his chest, the tip of the knife pointing upwards, his eyes fixed intently on the front. Apparently he has already entered some kind of state.

With a sudden advance, his wrist turned and the blade tilted upwards. He straightened up and stabbed, but before the momentum had fallen, he shifted his elbow to the right side and swung it out from bottom to top until it reached the top of his head. Zhang Feng immediately sank his arm and flipped the blade over, chopping down vertically in a straight line. This was indeed the slant stab and horizontal swing of military knife techniques. The standard of the movement was no less than Chen Hua's demonstration earlier, leaving others who were still exploring in awe.

Everyone feels that Zhang Feng's three moves bring a strong momentum, and the direction of his knife gives people a deep sense of oppression. The only regret is that Zhang Feng doesn't have Chen Hua's murderous aura, after all, Zhang Feng has never killed anyone before. Unlike Chen Hua, as soon as he touches the hilt of the sword, he involuntarily narrows his eyes and exudes a dangerous atmosphere, clearly having killed many enemies.

Chen Hua saw Zhang Feng learning so quickly, his mouth was about to reach his ears. This time he really picked up a treasure, in terms of strength, Zhang Feng's assessment was something Chen had never seen before, a 200-pound stone lock could be lifted with ease and without changing expression; Moreover, in military training, Zhang Feng received fewer lashes yesterday and could even help his comrades relieve pain and fatigue; Now, with this incredible learning speed added to that, his future prospects will surely be boundless.

Zhang Feng practiced his knife skills a few more times, feeling that he was almost ready, and then sparred with Chen Hua. As a result, without considering the foundation of Wudang Mountain's martial arts, it can be said that the two were already evenly matched in terms of military knife skills.

The six sons, including Da Niu, were also secretly motivated and worked harder to practice under the guidance of the old soldier, gradually improving.

In the morning, they practiced sword fighting, and in the afternoon, they trained with guns. Everyone on the training ground was sweating profusely, no one dared to slack off. As Liu Sheng's hundred households said, mastering combat skills is the foundation of survival on the battlefield. Relaxing now would be abandoning oneself and being irresponsible to one's comrades...

In the evening after returning to the camp, Zhang Feng still helped everyone with their acupoints, nourishing their spirits and preparing for the third day's training.

Compared to the first two days, the training content on the third day was much simpler, but also more boring. The troops were marching outside, encountering mountains and opening roads, and encountering water and building bridges, which required physical strength.

Ni Lianbai, with triangular eyes, sat under the eaves, enjoying the cool and drinking tea. He didn't need to explain anything, just lifting stones and smashing wooden stakes, with old soldiers supervising him, he was happy to be lazy and idle.

The soldiers on the training ground all bared their upper bodies, and cheers erupted everywhere. One moment someone lifted a certain number of kilograms, and the next someone added several stone locks, driving them deep into the wooden stakes, with everyone in high spirits.

Especially the group led by Sun Ma Zi, each and every one of them were sturdy and robust men with thick waists, they would often cause astonishment among other new recruits when lifting heavy stones or wooden stakes.

Sun Ma Zi looked at the crowd he had attracted, then glanced sideways at Chen Hua and the others with disdain, humming a scornful tune, thinking to himself that his bet was probably won.

Chen Hua was also helpless, thinking that to attract people to come and take a look, he had to have something worth showing off. On his side, only Da Niu and Wang Ping were considered to be of some strength, while the Xu brothers were just ordinary passersby; Liu Zi was still young and couldn't overexert himself, and as for Lao Gu, it was even more impossible, they were all old bones.

The only impressive Zhang Feng didn't rush or drag on, and didn't seem to want to show off, as if hiding his skills.

Zhang Feng was in no hurry and didn't need to compare himself with others. He just waited for the new recruits' final assessment after their training...
