False Hero: Chapter 40 – Hunting Quests With A Foxkin

The morning sun hung high in the sky, its warm rays gently bathing the city streets, casting long, golden shadows across the cobblestones. The streets were alive with movement, bustling with people of all kinds—merchants calling out their wares, children darting in and out of the crowd, and adventurers from all walks of life, their faces alight with anticipation for the day ahead. Among them, Yuki walked with her companion, Sienna, the foxkin whose golden eyes gleamed with excitement. Yuki’s violet eyes glowed softly in the morning light, her expression calm and watchful as they made their way toward the Adventurers Guild.

The guild’s towering structure loomed before them, as vibrant and full of energy as ever. The rge wooden doors creaked open as they stepped inside, the sound of voices and ughter spilling out into the street. The hall was packed with adventurers—knights cd in shining armor, their swords clinking as they conversed, spellcasters hunched over ancient scrolls, and rogues gathered in small huddles, eyes darting over their shoulders. The air was thick with the scent of fresh parchment, old wood, and a faint hint of fire from the hearths.

Yuki’s gaze swept over the crowd, her violet eyes flicking between faces and figures, her expression neutral but sharp. She had seen it all before—the banter, the deals, the endless ebb and flow of adventurers chasing their fortunes. Beside her, Sienna trotted happily, her fluffy tail swishing behind her with every step. Her golden eyes were wide, alive with the promise of adventure. She could hardly contain her excitement, a small grin tugging at the corners of her mouth.

“We’ve got to find something good today,” Sienna said, her voice filled with eagerness. “Something that’ll get us out in the wild, you know? Stretch our legs and see what the forest has to offer.”

Yuki gave a quiet nod, her gaze focused ahead. “The forest provides the best opportunities for both hunting and gathering. It’s the most efficient use of our time.”

As they approached the quest boards, the noise in the hall seemed to swell. A mix of voices rang in the air, some boasting of past glories, others discussing their next ventures. The boards were lined with parchment, each one fluttering slightly as the adventurers jostled for a better look. Yuki moved through the crowd with practiced ease, her midnight-bck hair flowing gracefully behind her like a silk curtain. She weaved through the throng, her eyes fixed on the board at the front, where the test quests were pinned.

Sienna, ears perked, trotted after her, her gaze flicking to the conversations around them. She caught bits of chatter—talk of a dragon sighting, rumors of hidden treasures, and the occasional boast of an adventurer’s daring escapades.

At the board, Yuki paused for a moment before reaching out, her fingers brushing over the papers. She scanned the quests in front of her, each one offering a different kind of challenge. With a small, deliberate motion, she pointed to six quests in particur. “Here,” she said, her voice calm but decisive. “These should be sufficient. Wolf hunting, slime extermination, and four gathering tasks—herbs, honey, mana flowers, and sap from bck tar magica trees.”

Sienna’s golden eyes twinkled with amusement as she peered at the board. “Six quests? Ambitious, aren’t we?” she teased, her tail twitching pyfully.

Yuki gave a small shrug, unphased. “We’ll complete them by midday,” she replied, her tone steady and matter-of-fact. Without hesitation, she moved to the nearby clerk, her movements fluid and graceful. She handed the quests over to the clerk, who looked up at her with a raised eyebrow.

“Six quests in one go? You sure about this?” the clerk asked, a hint of skepticism in his voice.

Yuki’s gaze met his, unwavering. “Positive.”

Sienna’s grin widened as she added with confidence, “Don’t worry. We’ve got this.”

With their quests officially accepted and registered, the pair turned and made their way back to the door. The air outside was fresh, the streets bathed in sunlight as they began their journey toward the forest. Their steps quite and determined as they made there way to outside the city to complete more quests.

The dense forest welcomed them with a symphony of natural sounds, the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant call of birds filling the air. The vibrant green canopy above shielded them from the harsh midday sun, casting patches of light across the forest floor, which was thick with moss and fallen leaves. The scent of damp earth and fresh foliage mingled with the crispness of the air, a reminder of the forest's untamed beauty. Yuki moved with fluid grace, her every step measured and silent as she navigated the winding path. Her glowing violet eyes scanned the surroundings with sharp precision, missing nothing.

Sienna followed closely, her golden eyes alight with curiosity and energy. Her foxkin ears twitched with every sound—the flutter of a bird’s wings, the skittering of small creatures in the underbrush, and the distant calls of the forest’s more dangerous inhabitants. Her tail flicked with excitement as she took in the sights, her sharp instincts alert to every movement.

Their first task was clear: a pack of wolves had been terrorizing the nearby vilges, and it was their job to put an end to it. The thought of facing such creatures sparked a thrill in Sienna’s chest, but she knew the importance of being methodical. These wolves weren’t like the ones that roamed aimlessly through the wild—they were organized, vicious, and desperate, driven by hunger and a territorial instinct that made them a threat to the people nearby.

After a short while, Yuki stopped at the edge of a clearing, signaling for Sienna to crouch low behind a thicket. Her violet eyes narrowed as she studied the wolves. The pack was rger than she had expected—nine in total, all lean and fierce, their eyes glinting with predatory hunger. Their coats were thick, matted with dirt and grime, and their sharp fangs gleamed as they prowled in the clearing, sniffing the air and growling among themselves.

Yuki’s gaze was focused and calcuting. She took a deep breath, letting the stillness of the forest seep into her senses. She was already calcuting the best course of action, her mind moving as swiftly as her body. “There are nine of them,” she murmured, her voice a soft whisper that barely disturbed the air.

Sienna’s ears perked up, and a mischievous grin tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Easy pickings,” she replied, her voice barely above a breath as her fingers instinctively twitched toward the daggers at her side. Her excitement was palpable, but her focus was unwavering.

Yuki’s hand fell to the hilt of her bde, the dark steel glinting in the dappled sunlight as she unsheathed it with practiced ease. The weapon seemed to hum with an energy of its own, a silent promise of efficiency and precision. She gnced at Sienna, her tone calm but authoritative. “Fnk them. Take the stragglers first.”

Sienna nodded, her golden eyes gleaming with understanding. Without a word, she melted into the shadows, her movements swift and fluid, disappearing like a wisp of wind. Yuki followed shortly after, stepping forward into the clearing with quiet confidence. The wolves, sensing something was amiss, raised their hackles and bared their teeth, growling in unison as they turned toward the intruders. But Yuki was already in motion.

Her bde danced through the air, slicing through fur and sinew with terrifying accuracy. Each strike was deliberate, a swift and calcuted movement that left no room for hesitation. The wolves were fast, but Yuki was faster. She moved like a shadow, her steps silent, her strikes sharp and unrelenting. One by one, the wolves fell, their growls silenced by the precision of her strikes.

From the shadows, Sienna emerged, moving with a fluid grace that matched the swaying of the trees around them. She darted in from the sides, her daggers fshing as she targeted the weaker wolves, those that gged behind or were distracted by the chaos. Her speed was a blur, and in moments, the clearing was eerily silent except for the soft rustle of leaves and the distant calls of the forest.

When the st wolf fell, its body limp on the ground, Yuki stepped back, her violet eyes scanning the scene. Sienna grinned, her tail flicking with satisfaction as she wiped a thin sheen of sweat from her brow. The hunt had been quick, efficient, and precise. They took a moment to gather the pelts, stripping them from the fallen wolves with practiced hands, before moving on, without a word, deeper into the forest.

Their next task was slime hunting—less graceful, more chaotic, but equally important. The slimes, while not dangerous on their own, had been multiplying at an arming rate, and their getinous bodies were proving a nuisance to nearby travelers. The hunt was a messier affair, with Yuki’s bde slicing through the slimes' viscous forms while Sienna nimbly avoided their sticky counterattacks. The slimes would sh out, attempting to engulf their attackers with their gooey bodies, but Sienna’s agility allowed her to slip through their grasp effortlessly. Each slime was swiftly dispatched, leaving behind only the faintest trace of their shimmering, colorful cores. By the end of the hunt, they had gathered twelve glowing cores, their colors swirling like tiny gaxies trapped inside translucent orbs. Sienna held one up to the light, her eyes fascinated by its beauty.

"These should fetch a good price at the market," she mused, tucking the cores safely into her bag.

Next came the gathering quests, which were less thrilling but equally important. The forest was full of treasures, both simple and rare, and Yuki’s sharp eyes spotted the herbs and mana flowers with ease. She moved through the underbrush with purpose, her hands quick and steady as she plucked the pnts and stored them in a leather pouch. Sienna, meanwhile, had her hands full with the honey collection. She approached the wild hives carefully, her movements slow and deliberate, avoiding the swarming bees as she reached for the honeycomb. Her ears twitched with every angry buzz, but her focus remained unbroken.

The final task, however, was the most challenging: the extraction of sap from the elusive bck tar magica trees. These trees were rare and dangerous, their sap a highly sought-after substance for its powerful properties. The trees themselves were ancient, their bark as dark as midnight, and their roots seemed to pulse with an eerie, otherworldly energy. Yuki had handled these trees before, and with steady hands, she carefully extracted the sap, making sure to avoid triggering the defensive thorns that guarded the tree. The process was delicate, but Yuki’s experience ensured it was done with precision.

By midday, their bags were heavy with the fruits of their bor—pelts, cores, herbs, honey, and sap. Yuki gnced at Sienna, a small, satisfied smile tugging at her lips. “Told you we’d finish by noon,” she said, her voice carrying a hint of pride.

Sienna wiped the sweat from her brow, her grin wide and filled with admiration. “Not bad, partner. You’re as efficient as ever.” She tried to say while mimicking Yuki's way of speaking, her tail flicking pyfully behind her. Yuki simply smiled at the foxkin before speaking “Let’s head back, then. We've earned a good rest.”

As they made their way back through the forest toward the city, the atmosphere around them felt serene, yet there was an unspoken tension in the air. Yuki walked ahead, her pace steady and unhurried, as usual. The forest, still vibrant with life, seemed to hum with quiet energy, but her focus remained fixed on the task at hand. The weight of the collected goods was a familiar burden, but she carried it with ease, as though it were no more than a brief inconvenience. Her glowing violet eyes, always vigint, scanned the surroundings with sharp precision, absorbing every detail. There was no room for distractions in her mind, not when they had so much to do.

Sienna, on the other hand, bounced along beside her, her energy uncontained. She hummed a little tune under her breath, her golden eyes sparkling with an excitement that seemed to never fade, even after a long day’s work. Her tail swayed happily behind her, brushing against the ground with each step. Despite the quiet solemnity of their journey, Sienna’s cheerful presence filled the air with warmth. She was constantly alert, though, her sharp foxkin senses picking up on every change in the wind or slight rustle in the trees, but she never let it dull her mood.

But then, as they walked in the quiet shade of the trees, something shifted in the air. Yuki felt it first, a subtle pull at the back of her mind, a familiar presence that made her pause mid-step. She narrowed her violet eyes, already aware of what it meant. A system message had appeared in her consciousness.

[System Notice: Imp: Nameless(Sve) is ready for Ascension. Allow the process to begin?][Yes/No?]

Yuki’s hand tensed around the strap of her bag, but she didn’t speak right away. She didn’t need to—the message was clear, and she’d been expecting it. The imp, a creature she had bound to her service not to long ago, had reached it's evolutionary point. She had been in constant combat and the imps stats where high level to begin with when she was bound to her service so it only made sense it would reach this point rather quickly. Yuki had considered herself pragmatic in her approach, and allowing the imp to ascend was a logical choice.

Sienna, noticing the subtle shift in Yuki’s demeanor, tilted her head curiously. “What’s wrong?” Her voice was light, as if she hadn’t noticed the seriousness that had settled over Yuki.

Yuki gnced at her, her expression neutral but her gaze slightly distant. “The Imp is ready to ascend,” she replied, her tone calm, betraying no emotion, but the slightest trace of thoughtfulness lingering in her words.

Sienna’s brow furrowed in mild confusion, her golden eyes reflecting a mix of curiosity and concern. “Oh, so you’re giving it a power boost, huh? That sounds interesting. I mean, it's already pretty useful, right?” She shrugged with a grin, her tail flicking pyfully. “You sure you want to make it stronger? Tamed Monsters are harder to control when they are of the same level as the owner.”

Yuki didn’t respond immediately. Her gaze shifted downward to the small, impish creature that had loyally followed them for so long. It had started off as a pitiful, nameless creature—small, weak, and almost entirely insignificant. But over time, it had proven itself resourceful, eager to serve, and surprisingly competent in its tasks. She had seen the potential in it, and this moment was the natural next step.

Without further hesitation, Yuki mentally confirmed the process, her decision already made.

The air around them rippled as dark energy began to swirl, condensing into a vortex that surrounded the imp. Sienna stepped back, her ears twitching in interest, watching as the energy began to form into something more. The air grew heavier, charged with the power of ascension, but Sienna didn't flinch. She had seen Yuki do things like this before, though each time, it always felt like a mystery unfolding.

The swirling mass of energy slowly dissipated, and where the small imp had once stood, now stood a Greater Imp. Its form had grown, its features becoming more defined, more humanoid. There was a faint shimmer of red in its newly grown hair, and its appearance had an undeniable femininity to it that wasn't entirely unexpected. It looked at Yuki with an air of quiet anticipation, as if awaiting the next step in its evolution.

Sienna blinked, her tail freezing mid-swish as her golden eyes widened. “Whoa,” she breathed, genuinely impressed. “That’s... a big change. It’s almost like a whole new imp.”

Yuki’s gaze softened slightly as she studied the transformed creature before her. Her thoughts were deliberate as always, weighing the change in front of her. “Igni,” she said after a moment, her voice clear and resolute. “Your name is Igni.”

The Greater Imp—Igni—bowed deeply, her movements graceful despite the rasp in her voice. “Thank you, master,” she said, the words filled with deep respect and gratitude.

Yuki’s eyes narrowed slightly, surprised by the sound of the voice. “You can speak now?” she asked, the question slipping from her lips before she could stop it.

Igni nodded, her expression earnest and a little unsure. “Y-Yes, master. I can.” The rasp in her voice made the words sound rough, but there was a strange softness in her gaze that hadn’t been there before.

Yuki studied Igni for a long moment. The transformation was more than just physical—it was as if the imp gained something, something that yuki didn't quite understand but something that Yuki cked. She would have to look around for information on the effects of naming. Snapping out of her thoughts she then spoke. “Alright then”, her tone pragmatic as always. “Come on, Igni. Let’s go.”

Sienna, who had been watching the exchange with curiosity, grinned brightly. “Looks like we’ve got a new addition to the team!” She bounced on her feet, her excitement infectious. “I like her already! She seems like she’s got a bit of a spark, huh?”

Igni, still adjusting to her new form, gave a small nod. “I will be of use, master.”

Sienna’s grin softened, her ears twitching as she considered Igni for a moment. “Well, I’m excited to see what you can do. Don’t worry, we’ll all have each other's backs!”

Yuki gave a quiet hum in acknowledgment and turned back toward the path leading into the city. The journey ahead would be just as demanding as the one behind them, but with Igni's ascension, they were now more prepared than ever. Though Yuki remained composed and focused, there was a sense of satisfaction in knowing that her choices had led to this moment.

And Sienna, always the happy go lucky foxkin, couldn’t shake the feeling of excitement that bubbled within her. She had her own burdens, her own secrets, things she kept hidden behind her bright smile, but for now, she was content.
