Kingdom of Amber, Fort of Jaipur, few days back on 12th march 1557.
With first rays of morning sun, a sea of soldiers cd in proper chainmail armours marched toward the fort of Amer. From the four Rajputana territories, this amassed army comprised 10,000 cavalry, 350 cannons, 30 siege towers supported by dders, 40,000 infantry ced with shields, swords, and spears, along with the twenty thousand militia which trembled the earth with its fury.
Upon reaching the vantage point of 1.5 km from the fort, the four kings gathered before their army. King Maldev Rao of Mawar addressed the group.
"They have cannons with the same range and effectiveness. We will split here. Our 50 cannons will provide cover fire, while the other hundred cannons will focus on the gates and then the cannons atop the walls. We must destroy them before the main assault."
King Karan Singh of Bikaner interjected, "But Rana Maldev Ji, they will be under intense fire. Wouldn't it be better to pull back the cannons once the gates are destroyed?"
King Maldev replied, "Rana Karan Singh Ji, we must not forget their cannons are also a lethal challenge to our forces. This sacrifice is necessary."
King Harshraj Singh of Jaisalmer responded, "Indeed, and our cover fire will serve as a deterrent. If we send them with enough gaps and proper pnning, the damages might be reduced."
As they all came to a conclusion, King Prithvi Raj Singh Rathore of Ajmer suggested, "Let me handle the southern direction."
King Maldev Rao nodded, "Then the western front is mine."
With this, Maldev and Karan Singh took half of the forces to tackle the western side of the fort, while Harshraj and Prithvi Raj Singh took the remaining to tackle the southern front.
In western side(defender side)
On the high south-western battlements of the fort, Queen Kalyani and Puran Das stood battle-ready in chain mail armours before dawn. From their elevated position, they had a clear view of the battlefield below. From the cover of ramparts 50 cannons were strategically arranged with gunners preparing for the imminent conflict.
Puran Das turned to Queen Kalyani with concern. "Your Majesty, what are your orders?"
Queen Kalyani with bow in her hand narrowed her eyes, gauging the enemy's movements.
She observed the Marwar faction splitting into two force for each front. As their cannons came into range, she noted 150 of them halting at around 1,200 meters, then inching closer to 1,100 meters before stopping and beginning to load at 1000 meters. However , 100 cannons continued approaching while the 50 cannons made the first outer line of assault.
Anticipating the enemy's strategy, she commanded, "Target the approaching cannons and focus fire!"
The orders were quickly reyed.
The gunners sprang into action as they loaded the canons swiftly. Powder was measured and poured, wadding(barrel cleaner) was rammed down the barrels, and cannonballs were loaded.
One gunner adjusted the elevation, while another ignited the slow fuse. The fuse sizzled brightly, and with a deafening roar the cannon fired.
Boom!
The ground shook as the cannonball hurtled through the barrel and burst out with a thunderous explosion.
It soared through the air with a whoosh and struck the ground, narrowly missing the approaching culverins on wheeled carts. The enemy soldiers pressed on with a slight flinch.
Western side( offensive)
Maldev Rao, observing from a distance, issued the command. "It's time to respond." The order was passed.
Drumbeats signaled the counterattack, and an enemy cannon fired back, striking the fort's wall with a resounding impact. The vibration felt like an earthquake, but the defenders stood resolute.
Multiple cannons from the fort roared to life, unleashing a barrage of cannonballs toward the advancing forces in western side. Shock waves erupted across the battlefield. Enemy artillery was smashed by brutal hits, gunners were blown away, and cannons were wrecked.
Even though the advancing cannons were more in sheer number and had strategic gaps but couldn't escape the from barrage as three or four enemy cannons were certainly hit, while the rest continued their relentless advance.
In the midst of bombardment, a cannoneer at the front shouted, "What do we want?"
Another replied, "GLORY!"
"How do we take it?"
"WITH FURY!", all in unison.
As the 100 cannons advanced forward, the back line of cannons began their bombardment with rger distance. Their shots echoed across the battlefield as some struck the fort walls doing minimal damage while others nded straight among the soldiers stationed on the wall, turning them into shreds despite their heavy armor.
The fort's architecture also suffered damage as sections of walls and battlements were relentlessly bombarded. Yet, the defenders held their positions with discipline.
Amidst the tension, Queen Kalyani remained composed. She watched as her forces worked tirelessly to return fire and hold their ground. The air was thick with smoke and sound of cannons.
Southern side (defensive)
General Nagpal stood on the southwestern battlement scanned the battlefield like a hawk.
He watched as the next 50 cannoneers advanced past the 1,000-meter mark, then to 900 meters, before halting to form a second line of offensive cannon fire. The rest of the cannoneers continued forward, the second line focusing their firepower on the western gate instead of the walls.
The ground shook violently as a cannonball from the southern offensive struck near his battlement. Nagpal stumbled but quickly regained his footing.
He turned to his left to get stunned as he saw the southern battle following same ruthless strategy. His heart raced as he anticipated the enemy's next moves.
Gncing at General Mahesh, who was commanding from the south eastern battlement to focus the attack on firing positions he knew it was a lost cause to discuss.
He took the matter in his own hands. "Move ten cannons to the western front!" Nagpal ordered
The gunners though puzzled but responded as per the command and reinforced the western defenses.
General Mahesh shot a look of disdain toward Nagpal but quickly returned his focus to the enemy forces, barking orders to target the firing positions.
Western side (defensive)
Queen Kalyani, observing the battlefield from her vantage point, noticed the unexpected repositioning of artillery. Her eyes followed General Nagpal as he ran across the ground, shouting orders. His men, driven by his urgency, began digging trenches and reinforcing positions.
He passed orders frantically but it was clear to discern amidst the bombardment.
"Dig the trenches!"
"Pass the long spears"
"I want archers behind."
"Bring more vilgers I dont care, need to surround the western gate.
His men worked tirelessly, digging and fortifying their defenses under the threat of enemy fire. The tension was all time high.
Queen Kalyani's inquired General Puran Das with concern. "What is General Nagpal doing with his men out there? Why isn't he in his designated position?"
Puran Das looked down to spot general Nagpal spreading caltrops. He replied, "Perhaps he's preparing for a potential breach, Your Majesty. It's always wise to have a backup pn."
A shadow of doubt crossed Kalyani's face. "But wouldn't that weaken our primary defenses ? Preventing a breach should be our foremost priority..."
Her words were cut short by a thunderous roar as the castle gates trembled under the relentless assault. The ground shook with the impact, and dust clouds erupted from the battered walls.
Puran Das nodded grimly. "You may be right, Your Majesty. But Nagpal is a best commander of the south. I trust his judgment."
Queen Kalyani couldn't give much thought to it due to pressing assault. The enemy was unleashing the continous barrage of cannon fire which felt like a hammer to cannon defense. She constantly had to order her own artillery to pick the target.
As the battle progressed, the barrage of shots continued on the western gate and walls, with more devastating power. Some cannonballs struck the defending cannons directly, breaking them into pieces.
In response defenders counterattacked fiercely with greater ferocity. No matter the number but with no protection the enemy cannons of first line couldn't survive the precise bombardment. The defender side with better range due to the height wiped them clean and focused on another line behind.
Southern side (offensive)
In the midst of the chaos, the southern gate had fallen, and the enemy cannons now turned their attention back to the cannons. King Harshraj singh watched with satisfaction as the southern wall began to crumble.
"Now, target their cannons," Prithvi Raj Singh standing beside him said to his commanders. "make sure not to leave one."
Panic engulfed the southern front as enemy cannon shots shattered the gate of the southern walls.
Southern side (defensive)
General Mahesh, standing on the south eastern battlements, fumed. His face reddened with anger, and his eyes darted towards the western front where General Nagpal had relocated ten artillery units.
"Damn that fool Nagpal!" Mahesh cursed under his breath. "Taking our cannons to the western side while our gate crumbles. Does he think the western gate is more important?"
A cannonball struck nearby with sheer velocity, shaking the battlements and sending debris flying. Mahesh ducked clutching his helm . He barked orders at his men in rage.
"Keep firing! Focus two for one. I want that damn things down."
The fortification somehow saved the cannons but still got gradually destroyed. Despite their ferocious attempt and height advantage to neutralize the advancing cannons, unlike the western side, they couldn't face the attack of three lines of 150 cannons and were thinned out.
But the damage was mutual. Amidst the coordinated barrage, the counterattack caused fierce impacts on the invaders' side as they destroyed the approaching cannons and scattered their crews before getting down itself.
In western side (offensive)
Far off at a safe distance of west, King Maldev of Marwar watched the battle unfold. He eased up slightly as he heard the cheers from the southern front. The southern gate had fallen which was a significant victory though within the calcutions . His eyes shifted back to the western gate, which was now under heavy assault.
"Excellent," He murmured. "The southern gate is down. Now, let's see how they handle this."
He gave the order to his remaining ninety cannons, "Focus fire on the western gate! Bring it down!"
The barrage of shots hit the western gate as sole target, the relentless assault shook the foundation of fort. The concentrated firepower finally broke the wall.
Queen Kalyani tried too hard to pinpoint the direction but couldn't stop it. To her absolute horror, the enemy cannons now targeted their side. Another round of barrage followed, and thanks to fortification and elevated height, their side saved 6 cannons while the enemy's whole line crumbled.
"Huh! We have reserves," King Maldev scoffed.
"Now, the main assault," He said to his commanders. "Prepare the troops. The gates are down; it's time to breach their walls and take the fort."
