In the heart of a dense forest, surrounded by ancient trees, was a large, quiet pond. The water sparkled in the sunlight, reflecting the wonders of the natural world. At its edges, dragonflies darted here and there over the heads of the resident frogs, while in the deeper, darker areas, fish and other small creatures hid, barely visible from above.
Artemis, a young turtle who lived here with her family, had known this place since she had hatched. She loved exploring the pond and its surroundings or simply letting the cool water carry her along.
In the evenings, she would often sit by the shore with her parents, gazing up at the night sky where the stars shone brightly. Sometimes, shooting stars would trace their glowing paths across the sky. Artemis would always wonder where they might be traveling and what adventures they might have. They seemed so swift and unrestrained that the young turtle dreamed of being just as free. But her parents, with whom Artemis lived happily and contentedly, didn’t feel the same urge to explore the world. Still, they always encouraged their daughter to follow her heart.
One day, an old snail slowly glided over the sun-warmed stones. Artemis could hardly hide her curiosity, greeted her kindly, and asked, “Have you seen many different places?”
The snail happily stretched out her feelers and began to speak enthusiastically, all the while nibbling on a juicy leaf. “Ever since I was young, I’ve been on the move, always discovering fascinating things. I’ve seen huge animals with great antlers and tiny animals with little antlers. I’ve tasted the sweetest berries, admired the most colorful flowers, and breathed in the most exciting scents. To me, life is like an endless journey of discovery. This pond of yours is very lovely, but it’s only a small part of the big, wide world.”
Artemis listened to the snail’s words, trying to imagine what might lie beyond the pond. The thought that there was so much more to experience stayed with her.
“That sounds really exciting!” she finally said to the snail. “But to be honest, I’m also a little scared of the unknown. You know, I’ve never left my home before.”

The old snail nodded. “It’s always a bit scary to try something new. But sometimes, being brave is worth it,” she replied kindly.
The young turtle gazed thoughtfully at the still water beside her.
As the snail chewed the last bite of her leaf, she asked in a calm voice, “What if you never find out what lies beyond the trees? What if, one day, you regret not having had the courage to explore other places?”
In the days that followed, Artemis kept thinking about those questions. She loved her pond and the safety it provided; she knew every corner and every hiding place here, and her parents were always close by to keep her safe. But at the same time, she felt such a longing for the unknown.
One morning, as the mist over the pond slowly lifted and the first rays of sunlight touched the water, Artemis made the brave decision to begin her own journey. The snail’s awesome stories had inspired her to learn more about life.
A gentle breeze swept over the pond, bringing a soft rustling of leaves, as Artemis said goodbye to her family.
Her mother, a wise and loving turtle, regarded her daughter proudly with a tear in her eye, and said, “Each of us must follow our own path. We’ll be here, waiting for you, and we’ll look forward to seeing you again. And remember, sometimes happiness isn’t far away; it can be found in every little step.”
Artemis’s father, whose shell carried the marks of many years, nodded in agreement.
With just a little nervousness in her step the young turtle moved forward cautiously. But soon, she hesitated and looked back at her parents.
Her father smiled warmly. “No matter how far you travel, we’ll always be with you in spirit.”
These comforting words gave Artemis the courage she needed to truly follow her curiosity. Each step away from the pond took her deeper into the unknown.
“I want to learn, to grow, and someday to tell others about my adventures,” she thought with great determination.
The tall trees and thick canopy of leaves were both inviting and mysterious. Already, a fascinating world full of surprises and diversity was unfolding before Artemis, filling her with wonder.
