Prologue Part I: The Lotus Blooming Rite

Twin Lotus Sanctuary, Moonlight Mirror Lake

  ?

The Twin Lotus Clan was neither the strongest nor the largest sect in Shenzhou, but it was the most sacred. Hidden in the frost-wrapped mountains of Xueyao, its disciples cultivated harmony between soul and spirit, balancing strength with feeling, discipline with empathy.

To the outside world, this made them weak.

To the Heavens, it made them dangerous.

At the center of the sanctuary, beneath the pale halo of twin moons and a sky veiled in drifting frost-light mist, stood Lian Fengyu, a cultivator whose beauty rivaled the moonlight and whose strength once stilled a Heavenly Tribulation with a single breath. Known as the Silent Bloom Matron, she led the clan not with conquest, but with compassion.

Her appearance seems to be carved from snowfall and moonlight. Her hair, long and silvery-white with subtle lilac undertones, braided, cascaded down her back like a frozen waterfall, bound at the end with a single white lotus pin—her clan’s symbol. A few strands floated freely around her face, stirred only by the hush of spiritual wind. Her skin was porcelain-pale, untouched by age or blemish, yet aglow with a faint rose warmth at the cheeks and the bridge of her nose. Her eyes, moon-hued lavender, calm as the surface of a still lake, yet deep—far deeper than any reflection could touch.

For today’s occasion she wore a flowing ceremonial robe of pale jade, white, and soft lotus pink, its long sleeves embroidered with lotus petals in silver thread that glowed faintly with her spirit energy. Barefoot upon the polished stone of the central dais, her every step left behind faint crystalline lotus patterns, formed from the sheer overflow of her cultivation and soul. It was said she could walk through a blizzard and the snow would choose not to touch her.

Her legacy, however, was not her clan or her sword. It was her twin daughters: Lian Xue and Lian Yue.

  ?

The sky shimmered silver on the night of the twins’ sixteenth birthday, two moons overhead casting light on the Mirror Lake. The clan gathered for the Lotus Blooming Rite, a sacred coming-of-age ceremony marking a cultivator’s first step into adulthood. A ritual where the soul reveals its true path to the Heavens upon placing their chosen petals in the Lotus Fire. A mystic flame shaped in the form of a blooming lotus, burning with hues of silver, violet, and gold. The flame does not consume nor flicker it reveals.

Silence had fallen over the gathered clan. Elders lined the steps, robes fluttering like petals in the wind. Disciples watched in silent reverence.

Xue stood before the ancestral dais, poised and quiet, hair like fallen snow, eyes like still waters. She chose a white lotus petal from the bowl placed on the dais.

She offered the petal to the flame. The fire flared silver-white, releasing an aura of crystalline frost and slow-moving resonance.

The Heavens answered: [the path of clarity, stillness, and soul-refining frost.]

A slight smile, almost imperceptible crossed Xue’s face. Yue followed suit. She smiled with defiant joy, eyes glinting like silver fire. She chose a purple lotus petal. Just like her twin did moments ago, she offered the petal to the flame.

The fire burned violet, and a pulse of illusion shimmered across the dais. Fragments of light and dream curled in the sky, dancing through the courtyard like echoes.

The Heavens responded: [the path of soulcraft, dream-weaving, and illusion.]

For a breathless moment, the twins stood side by side, hands clasped, before the Lotus Fire, the twin flames of silver and violet still burning within.

  Then suddenly, SWOOSH!

The Lotus Fire flared! The twin flames began to swirl. The offered petals began dancing around each other. Slowly becoming one, petal to petal, light to light. A single petal bloomed at this moment. With a silver-violet hue, pulsing with a resonance that swept across the crowd like wind through water.

  WHOOSH!

A pillar of light made out of silver-violet hues shot up into the sky; a beacon for the world to witness the birth of a new soul resonance.

  A Twin-Soul Bloom.

Everyone at first watched in awe. No one can believe what was happening. It was a sight to behold.

Realization soon dawned on the Elders though.

  “Blasphemy.”

  “That’s not possible.”

  “This defies the Heavenly Law…”

The Law of Separation—one of the most sacred of the Heavenly Laws—forbade soul fusion between kin, even in purity. The belief was clear: such bonds disrupted karma, corrupted fate, and invited divine wrath.

At this moment, the Heavens took notice.

  RUMBLE!

The clan watched the Heavens with panicked expressions. Waiting to see what the Heavens will decide. But they did nothing. Only continued to watch.

Lian Fengyu at this moment stepped between the crowd and her daughters. She touched both their shoulders and spoke only once. “I knew this day would come the moment I held you both in my arms. You both been inseparable since birth. Stealing kisses in the dark where you thought I couldn’t see. But now, you must protect this bond and nurture the love each of you carry.”

As their mother’s warmth passed into them, the silver-violet lotus petal floated upward, dancing around the twins; the petal infused with the lotus fire, marked their foreheads, with a glowing sigil visible to all, even the Heavens.

  A twin-soul bloom.

A resonance never recorded in the history of Shenzhou, because it is forbidden.A resonance that only occurs when two individual souls resonate so deeply and completely with one another that their spiritual energies begin to fuse—two souls blooming together in perfect harmony. A mutual echoing of the soul. Amplifying the other’s qi, emotions, and intent. Their paths, once separate, begin to align so closely that the Heavenly Will can no longer interpret them as two distinct karmic threads.

This was a direct challenge to the Heavenly Law of Separation.

Silence reigned over the ceremony. The gathered clansmen slowly dispersed. Hoping a calamity will not befall them. But the rest of the world took notice. Especially those with malicious intentions. Within the span of a few days, the Four Great Sects issued an edict.
