Chapter 49: Breed That Monster Nest!

  --------- Forge Room ---------

The dungeon's self-image looked down. 'Oh yeah, I forgot I made a grave for Smith the smith. What do I have to do to keep all this crap updated, anyway?', the dungeon asked itself rhetorically.

'Well anyway, you're fine over there. How many other graves are ready?', the dungeon again asked itself without any intention or interest in getting a reply while he wandered into the Graveyard. The holes of three graves, soon to be gelfling zombie respawners, were out in front of him, with the fourth just being started by one of the zombies previously assigned to digging the Daedric Tower.

'Zombie, when you're done doing the graves I need for all the current zombies, just keep going. Fill the room with graves, all nice and in a grid pattern since those look so good. Leave a um... a path, like a walking path, in between them so you can go from one room to the next without falling into a hole, though.' The command given, the zombie didn't respond, but Giant Squisher knew that it would do as it was told. 'Actually, all zombies should remember whatever I tell them to do. Like even after respawning. Remember all the shit I told all of you to do so I don't have to keep telling everyone what to do all the time.'

Giant moved over to the trio of gelfling zombie respawning graves, and upon selecting the second one, got a message. 'I can make these lineage too? Okay, then! That would make the ants more interesting, wouldn't it? I must have done something right.'

'Wait a minute. How are the zombies that I already have supposed to be crossbreeds? Whatever, they can figure it out themselves. I'm not doing it.' At around the time of having this thought, it felt as though someone was staring at the back of his head from across a room, possibly from behind a table or something.

--------- Giant Squisher Cave Entrance ---------

Branch walked into the dungeon through its still-natural cave entrance, really just a crack in the mud, so easily that he might as well have been lightly jogging forward, phasing through the wall.

You might be reading a pirated copy. Look for the official release to support the author.

Pale, on the other hand, got the gear hanging from his hip stuck, having not turned sideways enough to avoid such an issue. "Are dungeons as difficult to get into as this one? Please tell me that it gets easier."

Instead of another Exterminator answering him, the woman with the easily identifiable facial scar coming up from behind did. "It doesn't make a difference what it's like. They can change completely from one day to the next, and whatever a dungeon might have one day, it might not be there, or in the same place, the next day."

"No one gets along with adventurers for some reason", the woman thought to herself, "but if I keep their guard down around me, it'll make advancing that much easier."

"Been in many of them?", Branch asked, knowing that she definitely had. She had that air about her, and the staff with dungeon core shards she didn't bring with her this time proved it even more.

  "Two or three", she responded.

  --------- WesternForest ---------

The sledge was haphazardly constructed from the pilfered remains of a wagon, but it did the job well enough. The functional caravan didn't move as quickly as it should have even if it was fully equipped, though the Exterminators Guild had fended off the attacks so well that they only lost one of their two moosedayle and two tents.

As they walked into the town square, a few of the citizens mulling around took notice and came closer, avoiding the giant freight animal that towered over them. "What is that?", a man with a missing arm asked the coachman.

"No one's sure. Took out a moosedayle and destroyed some of our supplies. Are you the tanner?", the coachman asked.

"No, but I'll get him for you. Replacement hide from whatever that monster is?" The man pointed towards the deceased creature being dragged on the land-sled, its misshapen-looking form incomprehensible.

A couple handfulls of minutes later, the tanner had arrived at the trader's wagon. Not one to mince words or waste time, he got to work right away, assessing the body. It looked like a water-attracted beetle the tanner was used to, but it was far too big, nearly big enough to ride on. Whether anyone would be willing was exceptionally questionable. Though, that would be easy enough to work on, making the chitin into various tools. But it wasn't that easy to work on or even understand, since it looked like the monster had most of a predatory feline fused onto it, missing the head and torso. But the limbs were upside-down and spread out.

The tanner looked at one of the fighters that had clearly escorted the trader. "How did this thing use its claws?"

The man rubbed the back of his head. "Accidentally? I think? It mostly flailed around wildly, scratching everything it could. They are sharp though, and hard. Works well on leg meat. That's how the moosedayle went down."

"By flailing around, what do you mean? This thing looks very insect-like."

"Yeah, the bug part jumped side to side and made a lot of half-jumps, I think to make the claws able to swipe."

The tanner stared at the monster, becoming increasingly confused as he did so. He looked away. "Alright, I'll take the hide. How far away is the moosedayle?"

The Exterminator shook his head. "Not worth traveling back even for parts from it. Something would have found it by now and I don't think you want to be part of that."

Various craftsmen came to take parts of the new monster, whatever it was. The village didn't have a local Exterminator Guild, so no one came to draw the monster in whole or part. Eventually, everything was taken apart, and the trader had acquired a notable amount of local goods of varying quality, ready for trading to other villages.

In the butcher's hut, a related situation was taking hold.

The butcher tried to string up the carcass, but its shape was too unconventional. He tried putting it on the chopping table, but that didn't help him get access to everything he needed. Most of the monsters he prepared for consumption at least made sense, but this one looked more like it was put together badly. Like it wasn't supposed to be encountered. Like it wasn't meant to be.

He shook his head, and looked away. Instead of allowing himself to think of the creature in comparison to other monsters and animals, he just started chopping. It didn't matter if the various cuts of meat were somewhere in between giant insect monster and game animal. It was chunks of meat to throw into stew. He, and the others who would eat it that night and over the next few days, could focus more on the few vegetables and not have to ask themselves anything.
