Welcome To Black Hollow

Thanks to Henry, the man I saved from the attack, I was getting a ride to the nearest story. Henry was an older man, I think, who apparently owned a company that sold things. He was apparently coming back from a trip to a nation deep into the forest and in the mountain range I saw in the distance.

He expined to me that, when he was younger and just formed his company, he somehow struck up a trading deal with the elves and dwarves, two nations that famously were isotionist from the humans.

Since he was the only one who could trade with them, his company quickly grew in value and power.

“But even now, after so many years, I still like to be the one who delivers to them” he expined to me.

His companion on these trips, Jacob, also told me about his life. He is an adventurer who holds a contract with Henry to protect him when going to these locations. Since it isn't super dangerous, Henry is able to hire a lower ranked adventurer.

While listening to what they were talking about, some of the stuff made sense to me, while others didn’t.

For example I know what an elf is, a dwarf, and an adventurer, but others didn’t. Like I had no clue what Henry and Jacob meant by a rank for an adventurer. Like it was a job, I knew that, but what was the rank involved?

It seemed like the gaps in my knowledge base were completely arbitrary and random.

And everytime I run into something I think I should know, but don’t, I feel worse.

This leads to me staying silent for the most part in the carriage on our way to the city. When we got closer, our carriage was put into a line leading into a city, which was completely surrounded by a wall. When we enter the line, Henry starts to organize a bunch of documents for the other stuff in the carriage.

On top of selling things to the elves and dwarves, he also buys things from them as well. He expins that since they are from another nation, this is all taxed, so he needs to report what he is bringing into the city.

All of this makes some type of sense to me, but with nothing to do while he and Jacob work, I just sit in the back of the carriage waiting.

I also get a chance to see the other type of people entering the city. The crowds of people, most of them holding weapons. We are the only people in a carriage trying to enter the city, which kind of confused me.

After waiting for about 20 minutes, we end up getting to the front of the line and Henry starts talking to someone in armor, probably a guard for the city. While they are talking, I overhear some stuff that kind of involves me.

“I also need to pay the entrance tax for another person who has no identification” Henry told the guard.

“Hmm, Mr Card, you are aware svery is illegal in the Cardon Empire, correct. If you bought a sve and are illegally bringing it into the nation…” The guard brings up in a serious tone.

“No nothing like that. On my way back, I was saved by a person, and they asked me to bring them into town. I would never participate in the sve trade” Henry said, kinda pushing off the accusation.

“Allright, but I will need to meet this person to make sure they aren’t a criminal, but you paying the tax for them is perfectly fine” the guard tells him.

Hearing this, I get out of the carriage and walk over to where the two of them were talking.

“I’ll go get them…” Henry says, only to turn and run right into me. “Oh, well good. The guards just need to check to see if you are a criminal in the Cardon Empire”

“Well, I've never been here before, so I shouldn’t be one” I say.

“Great” the guard says, and brings me over to their desk. “This tablet is connected to a system magic that will check to see if you are a criminal in our nation, or any we are allied with”

“Ok, what do I do with it?”

“You need to bleed on it” He tells me.

“Cool” I say, grabbing my sword while the guard goes to the other side of his desk. And before he can do anything else, I cut open my hand.

And as my blood pours onto the tablet, the guard looks up and I see he is holding a thin needle. I look at him bnkly as he does the same to me.

  “...”

  “...”

“Well… according to the tablet, you are not a criminal, but do you want me to get a potion for the cut?” they ask me.

“No, I think I am fine” The cut didn’t even hurt in the slightest. To stop the bleeding I rip off part of my clothes to cover the cut and head back to the carriage.

When I got back, I noticed Henry paid the guard some money and he also got back into the carriage and Jacob drove us into the city.

“Well, I’m guessing that you don’t have a pce to stay within the city, so I can pay for an inn for you” Henry told me when we entered the city.

“Um, you don’t have to do all of that. I can probably figure out where to stay” I say, trying not to rely on him for to long.

“Nonsense, you clearly have no money to pay for this stuff, and I still owe you for saving me” he said.

He was right, I had no money, nor an idea of how to earn money or how much I would need to survive.

“Thanks” I say, looking away, not happy for needing this help.

“Great, and I actually own the inn I’ll be putting you up in, so it's no real problem for me” he tells me.

A few minutes ter, our carriage stops behind a rge building and Henry and Jacob tell me to wait while they unload the stuff Henry has bought.

After a while, they finish and Henry starts talking to me. “Great, I can show you to the inn now.” From there, he lead me through the town a little, while expining a few things to me. This city is the boarder town of that Cardon Empire I heard of earlier.

Turns out that Henry is, very distantly, reted to the royal family of the kingdom. He did say the only time he ever met them was when he was selling things to them, but like 10 generations ago, his ancestor was a prince or something and left the royal family to follow his own path. Then down the line, Henry was born and started the Card Trading Company. His branch of the family wasn’t super well known for anything outside of him though.

He also told me about where I am going to be staying. Turns out that since he had done so well in the trading business, he expanded into other business, like inns or restaurants. And where I am going to be staying was his fgship location.

Or at least the current one.

Its called the Midnight Inn and is actually run by his sister in w, that being his younger brother's wife. As for his younger brother, he is working in the capital on a special project.

It was all pretty interesting, but it didn’t really matter to me deep down.

As we made it to the inn, he led me inside and started talking to a woman behind the front desk. The inn was very nice, not what I expected. It was weird, I should have no memory of what this should be like, but this wasn’t it.

“All right, everything should be fine for now. You can stay her indefinitely.” Henry told me. “And Ms Rachel will show you to your room. Its the best one we have”

  “Thanks” I say.

“Hey, your going to remember something eventually” He said, probably noticing my aloofness. I was having a hard time piece together what I was going to do, and Henry was being extraordinarily nice to me.

And before he left and the matron of the inn, Ms. Rachel showed me to the room I was staying in, he said one more thing.

  “And Welcome to Bck Hollow”
